So a friend of mine wants a Intel Core i5-2500K, and our local prices can allow me to sell him the i5-2500K and add only $47 and get a i7-3770, i highly think i should go for it:

1: I haven't Over Clocked the 2500K coz I'm using stock cooler plus the stock clock is adequate for whatever i do, i highly think i wont be over clocking the 2500K.
2: i7 has 4 more threads which might be beneficial plus it's a i7-3770 Ivy Bridge

If he approaches me I'll definitely go for the i7-3770.

Share your opinion.

I was thinking the same thing here but to be honest what are you using the PC for?

Simple question, do you ever plan to overclock?

The 2500k is unlocked, which will make overclocking easier. It has less stock performance, but you can overclock higher. The 3770 is locked, so overclocking is less friendly.

If you're using the IGP, then definitely go 3770.

My two cents, go 3770. It doesn't seem like you're using the overclocking, so go with the 3770.

Mostly Gaming, Sound editing and sometime video encoding

Exactly $47 is what i add to get the i7-3770, the actual prices here are the i7-3770 is $359 and the i5-2500K is $312 and to be honest i got my i5-2500K from UK it was $260 when i bought it so i'll be selling at a profit too.

I dint think i want to go that rout yet coz i use standard stock cooler which comes with the Boxed CPU, at the back of my mind i like the idea that i can over clock tho i never find the need to, and highly think i wont be over clocking

Yeah I completely glossed over it was a locked CPU. But rubber to the road it's still an upgrade.

Yes that would be where those extra threads would come in handy.

Nice if they will come in handy, now to wait for the person i hope it all works out.

And another question will i need to use the memory override to get may vengeance running in 1600MHz or even at default without override they will work at 1600MHz?

If you wont overclock the 2500k (wich is a shame) then yes the 3770 would be more powerfull but not that much, give that 2500k a 4,5ghz clock and it would smoke that 3770 .
For the diference you pay for the 3770 i would buy a nice cooler instead and oc the 2500k.

If things dont go the i7-3770 way then i will consider spending money on a nice cooler, nice thought, I'll keep it in mind.

Well not down with Intel's BIOS but on my ASUS I can just select the XMP Profile and that set's it too the 1600 speeds/timings.

Ivy Bridge supports 1600 by default(SB "officially" supports 1333) Not sure how Z68 would handle it with IB.

Which reminds me MAKE SURE Intel has put out an updated BIOS that supports IB for your board.

On my DZ68BC Motherboard i just select XMP Profile as well, i guess this is what i meant by override,

So the question should be will i need to select XMP Profile to get My vengeance running at 1600Mhz or will the i7-3770 pick 1600MHz without me having to select XMP profile

I'm already running BIOS 0035 which Supports Ivy Bridge

You got me there. Not sure if it's a chipset or CPU dependant thing. Either way you have the XMP Profile sorted out either way.
Good you have the BIOS updated and ready for it.

Last time i checked, ever since i family of processors memory was being handled in the processor the overrides on the other hand eg XMP are handled by chipset if I'm not mistaken

15%?? Notable? lol

Only benefit in going to the 3770k is hyperthreading and the power saving features from the Tri Gate transisters.

He does do encoding so the hyperthreading is a plus over the 2500K right there so not a "sidegrade"

Add to that 200MHz speed and hyperthreading and in every possible CPU benchmark the 3770 smokes the 2500K - I say again stock vs. stock since the OP is not into OC

Not only that, the whole system will pull on average 20W less. So you get the added benefits in performance, while lowering power is consumed, which is a good deal all around in my books.

My 2500k did 4.0ghz on the stock cooler. Just because you have a stock cooler dont think you cant overclock. takes a bout 3 minutes too, and a 5 year old can do it.
