I just got it and haven't played it yet, but I am about to let it suck all the free time out of my life for awhile like the original SoaSE did.

Yes I do play it. There loads of changes, mostly to learn the individual playing styles.

One of many things i like about SoaSE is that with the max amount of planets the fight never stops. This game needs an urgent medical breakthrough that allow us to live longer

really though - that's ruined more of my civ building games than anything else, and it's still around. i got into the habit of just quitting games when it started to drag... but that's no fun.

see i'd love nothing more than to play this multiplayer, but its downright impossible to keep 3+ people in the one game for the 4 hours plus it takes to get even a medium game done, let alone a large one.

large AI matches are fun, but it always reaches a point where you just slowly take planet by planet through large amounts of lag, and i just quit before i finish

I have read it somewhere that the numerous fighter are causing the lag and there a mod that fix this.

fighters and trade ships, actually.

the mods only delay it, and all players need to have the mod. so it really breaks up MP games, when playing online.

If it only happens online, I would think the problem is with the large amount of positioning data and statuses (for everything in-game that is happening simultaneously) that has to be distributed to each player and not whether the AI is single threaded.
That's a hella lot of data that needs to be synced between the players in a serial (packets) manner, even if it's compressed.

i play(ed) this game a lot on LAN, and play SP games. the lag is still there, later on. it just gets worse because lots of players online dont have high end CPU's like us lot.

again, i say its single threaded. clock speed is king, and loooooots of people are running stock systems with low clocked quads.

I'm not doubting that it's a single threaded AI, Mussles.
They would have to completely rip apart the engine to multi-thread the AI, something they probably did not want to undertake for this expansion.
If not coded to perform near perfectly, which would require an incredible amount of testing given the complexity of the game, it would end up a disaster. I do not know what the sales figures are like for SoaSE, but it's quite possible that the cost to rewrite and test the engine in such a manner would be so high that they would never recoup the investment.
That would be bad for IronClad and Stardock ... really bad.

I know about the slowdown when there are hundreds of ships in SP, but MP (which I have never played) has got to exacerbate that problem with the game requiring the constant sending and receiving updated positional and status information for/from all of the players' ships and planets.
When considering everything that is tracked in game, I have to give them credit for it working as well as it does.

Anyway, I finally had a little time to re-familiarize myself with the game so I'm off to have a great time getting my ass handed to me.
Perhaps some day it will sink in that retreating and regrouping is not dishonorable and that "Death Before Dishonor" isn't always the best tactic. :laugh:

No, it won't fix anything but the post by Yarlen is rather refreshing. At least they are taking notice.

Here's another thread that deals with making the game feel less rushed.
It has nothing to do with lag, but I wonder if making really long (and few) phase lanes would slow the game progression (and needed fleet composition) enough to mitigate some of the late game lag.

Okay, I tried the long phase lanes.
My fleet got destroyed before I got out of the first planet group so I never got to test the long phase lanes.

doubled the races, in a way. each race is now split into two factions with variations in the research trees.

One way to cirucmvent the lag in the short term is to save, quit game, and then reload. I don't know why but it seems to help. Also as Mussels mentioned, single core GHz is king. Still a great game though, best played 1v1 sometimes.

Which faction do you play? I am more towards Varsari Loyalists. Though I am really wanting to learn the Advent Rebels.
