I have encountered blue screen restarts a few times today and yesterday. According to AIDA64, my GPU is reaching temps of 95+. I have tried speedfan and turned the only fan it shows up to 100% but it seems to do nothing. I hear and feel no difference. Any idea what could be causing this? It's a Dell Inspiron 1564 w/ a 512mb ATI 4330 card.

Are you using the laptop on a bed or a carpet?

I have encountered this problem with it on my lap and a table (folding banquet table). It just happened on the table a few minutes before this post.

Well could be a few things. Not getting enough fresh air is one. That could be it muffled by your leg or a table cloth. Could be from dust built up in the laptop. Did you confirm the fan was working? You said you used speedfan and didnt hear any difference. Might be the fan is dead. Might even be the thermal paste needs to be replaced.

Was it doing this before or is this something new? Sometimes a driver or something can cause a GPU or CPU to over work itself. Also did you check for recalls on the laptop or if there is a bios update?

The table is flat with no cloth or anything on it. I can feel some air movement when I put my hand over the fan slot. I just reformatted this laptop the other day. Could it be a bad chipset driver?

Was it running fine before the format?

It's probably clogged with dust inside. Need to service it.

I worked on a laptop last night same issue, opened it up and heatsink was caked with dust.

I wouldn't say "fine", but it definitely wasn't BSoDing on me. It was warm, but for me, that's expected. It was not this hot though.

I have no idea how to open a laptop. I stick to building desktops. Which screws need to come out to get to the GPU?

I did neither. I reformatted and installed bluetooth drivers and video card drivers. My video card driver is an old ass driver due to 12.4 giving me pixel issues in D3. After that, I used driver genius pro to update the other drivers. =/

Um you need to install the drivers from the mfg website. Not using genius driver pro.

Go to your MFG website and install the drivers for your laptop. I would do a clean install of windows. Chances are you installed something not meant for your laptop.

get a vacuum with a hose and suck out the dust from that vent you shown in pic for a few seconds.

I just tried to take it apart. I got to the part where the video wanted me to take out the wireless card. I stopped there. Looking into the vent with a flashlight shows very little dust. Obviously it's not brand new, but I don't see a buildup of anything.

That's a great way to fry hardware right there. :shadedshu

Air compressor/duster gas is your safe bet for cleaning dust.

I believe mailman is giving you the correct directions. Do a fresh install of windows and get the drivers for your laptop off the manufacturers website.

vacuuming doesn't fry hardware. fresh windows install wont solve any heat issues.

dust is clogged inside somewhere. Did you read when he said he forced fan 100% and no sound or notice any difference...

Do not use a vacuum for shit sakes. Static electricity will fry it hardware. A fresh install of windows and the mfg drivers can fix his issue if its not hardware related. Mfg. use custom drivers for thier hardware. Using something else CAN cause his issues.

yeah if you really want to clean the laptop use some canned air. Although BSOD like that from temps and something has got to be broken software wise.

I run windows on my macbook pro that hits 100C in like 4 seconds, and then starts melting my fake leather cover on my coffee table, and still doesn't BSOD.

+1 for reinstall

vacuuming doesn't fry hardware. fresh windows install wont solve any heat issues.

dust is clogged inside somewhere. Did you read when he said he forced fan 100% and no sound or notice any difference...

Vacuums build up static and can discharge on components, killing them. It's been talked about dozens of times on TPU.

It could just be speedfan can't control his fans, because the right driver isn't installed. Or maybe another factor. I've seen plenty of laptops that won't allow you to control fan speed at all.

Fresh install with the right drivers is the correct path.

a little googling on the interwebs shows some users having similar problems. I would contact dell - their tech support might have seen this before. It could be anything from borked hardware to a loose sata cable, to a bad driver loading somewhere.

Back up your software, and do a completely clean install - if that does not work then it is a hardware issue.

Have you tried booting into safe mode and looking in event viewer to see what's happening/wrong?
