Hi all!
I was watching some videos on youtube and there are a lot of great graphics made
in Illustrator. I have never ever opened this program before and was interested to hear
your opinions if it is better than photoshop and where it is better.
Normally it has its own strengths!

It's different from photoshop. Photoshop is for editing/manipulation/etc. photos. Illustrator is for illustrating things. Use both depending on what you want to do.

Illustrator uses vector rendering (lines/shapes) and Photoshop uses rasterisation (pixels).

They are two very different animals for two very different things. If you are gonna use Illustator make sure you use CS6 as its now using the Mercury engine that supports 64-bit. Anything older is running 32-bit and will cause issues once it peaks out in RAM.

Also you can illustrate in Photoshop. Its not just for editing/manipulation/etc. As a matter of fact most professional illustrator/artists use Photoshop or Painter to create art.

Yes and then to round out the "Big Three" Adobe apps you have InDesign which is for page layout (like Quark).

Well I suppose you could argue it's "big four" with Flash.

Fireworks > photoshop for me. It is simpler to manipulate images for websites, whereas photoshot seems like it is better for art / photos.

EDITED: Macromedia - Fireworks. Was going to say macromedia fireworks... changed that for obvious reasons, but left out the wrong word.

Macromedia......you mean Freehand? Macromedia was bought out by Adobe years ago. The last Macromedia program that was in the same ballpark as Illustrator was Freehand MX and they havent made it in years.

EDIT: Fireworks is also Adobe now.

So many programs, which make your head dull.
The fireworks thing is new to me too.
I just know Adobe reader, Photoshop and a little after effects and bridge
The more i will try to learn the more i will waste time!
I would choose to learn illustrator as i just started.
I have to learn a lot of other things, but since i am more oriented on a website,
there is no way i go back with game programming or 3ds Max. (or whatever)
Also i am in a test "season" so just illustrator is enough!
I will learn some tutorial to create some little graphics for the website and that is done!
I could even create them in paint, but that seems disgusting.

Been using Photoshop and Illustrator since 1997. I still learn new stuff after all these years man. Just remember there are a 100 ways to get the same exact thing in Adobe products. Its learning how and when to use each program appropriately.

If you are doing web design I would look into Dreamweaver.

Yeah i forgot dreamweaver, but since i made a psd to html using it, i left it.
The result was a 100% disaster and didnt want to make it again.
For codes its 100% right, but i use notepad++ as it doesnt give you any help so it makes you a better coder,
very light weight compared to dreamweaver, its free and other stuff.
Still dreamweaver is not that great for me. I got scared from last time!
