I was thinking about buying a phenom ii x4 @ 3.4ghz for 100$ on newegg, the max I'm willing to spend is 100$ so is about on the edge.

For the motherboard I have no idea, I dont know if I need pci-e 1x or older pci or what are the recommended number of slots to have; I dont know if 30$ is too low for a motherboard or 70$ is too high which is the maximum I'll go, I can't tell what's better or worse.

Once I find the right cpu/mobo combination Ive like the fastest possible memory, I was seeing some nice ddr3 1600 but dont know if a ddr2 can outperform it at a lower rating since they cost more.

If you have a recommendation please post links or the models of the hardware.
I already have a video card and harddrives, case and psu.

What's the model number (or link to) of the Phenom II CPU you want to buy?

Buy the FX-4100 and:

ASRock 970 PRO3 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 AT...

The 5770 that Brandon sold you will work well in this motherboard.

I've heard really good things about ASRock motherboards. I personally haven't used one yet, but I will be on my next build.

That motherboard I linked will support that CPU.

As far as RAM is concerned, anything over 1333MHz is going to require an overclock for that CPU.

GSkill is good, so is Corsair, Mushkin, Cruicial, Kingston, etc. Just make sure it's DDR3

so you're suggestion me to get 1333 ram or try to overclock the cpu with that motherboard and get some higher speed ram. I guess the question is can my cpu be overclocked?

Do not overclock the memory controller on that chip. Also any Am3+ board would be golden if you can get one. That way you have the ability to upgrade to a fx8 later down the road if you want to. That 965 is a great proc and imho I think it is better then the fx 4's and fx 6's. So you a good for awhile there. If you buy 1600 or higher memory set it to 1333 in the bios. Phenom chips really don't like there memory controller oced.
