Original post:

Hey all!

It's time we made a new CPU poll. I decided to make a thread about it first to make sure I don't forget stuff. Note that I've made no distintcion between mobile and desktop chips (and left out server chips entirely because I know nothing about them). Below are the planned choices (multichoice of course):

Intel

  • Vintage (Pentium MMX and backwards)
P6 Legacy (Pentium Pro - Pentium III, includes Pentium/Celeron M)
    Netburst
    Intel 64 Netburst
    Intel Core
    Core 2 Duo
    Core 2 Quad
    Core 2 Extreme
    Atom Single Core
    Atom Dual Core
    Nehalem Pentium
    Nehalem Core i3
    Nehalem Core i5
    Nehalem Core i7
    Nehalem Core i7 Extreme
    Sandy Bridge Celeron
    Sandy Bridge Pentium
    Sandy Bridge Core i3
    Sandy Bridge Core i5
    Sandy Bridge Core i5 S
    Sandy Bridge Core i5 K
    Sandy Bridge Core i7
    Sandy Bridge Core i7 S
    Sandy Bridge Core i7 K
    Sandy Bridge Core i7 Extreme
    Ivy Bridge Pentium
    Ivy Bridge Core i3
    Ivy Bridge Core i5
    Ivy Bridge Core i5 S
    Ivy Bridge Core i5 K
    Ivy Bridge Core i7
    Ivy Bridge Core i7 S
    Ivy Bridge Core i7 K
    Ivy Bridge Core i7 Extreme

AMD

  • Legacy (K6 and backwards)
    K7 - Athlon XP/MP, Duron, Sempron
    K8 - Athlon 64/FX, Sempron, Athlon 64 X2, Turion 64
    Athlon X2
    Phenom
    Phenom II
    Phenom II X6
    Athlon II
    Bulldozer FX-8xxx
    Bulldozer FX-6xxx
    Bulldozer FX-4xxx
    Piledriver FX-8xxx
    Piledriver FX-6xxx
    Piledriver FX-4xxx
    Brazos (AMD E, G, C, Z)
    Llano A4
    Llano A6
    Llano A8
    Brazos-T (also AMD Z)
    Trinity A4
    Trinity A6
    Trinity A8
    Trinity A10

And somewhere on the end I'll add two or three VIA CPU's.

Opinions, corrections? It feels like I made a mess of the AMD side of things, but they are MUCH more confusing than Intel imo.

So, as said I'd appreciate comments before I make it "live".

This is not the actual vote, it's just a post asking for suggestions and improvements. I hate doing these big polls only to realize I've forgotten something important.

oh sorry about that, already 2:36am here hehehe didn't read it properly,

well those choices above are great, people should also post a pic of their (even processor will do) as also saying they use this or that or at least vote for the cpu they had most good memories with ^_^

Good point. I've had something on the order of 10-15 different Intel CPU's, not even counting Cyrix.

How about the P4 EE ?

Maybe. Probably.

Anyway, I was thinking about asking people to vote what CPU's they actually run now. Counting everything one own or have owned is pretty useless imo.

I think the biggest concern is how granular you'd want the poll to be. Do the recent processors need to be so finely divided?

With Intel's socket-whoring, sorting by sockets for the later processors might work...

LGA 2011 (CPU A, CPU B, etc.)
LGA 1155 (CPU A, CPU B, etc.)
LGA 1156 (CPU A, CPU B, etc.)

This.

I have a T7500, an i7 2670M, and an Pii 945. These are just the ones actively in use.

Also, no VIA? Might as well include all 3 major x86 players! :D

Sockets aren't interesting, CPU's are. I chose the different CPU's by how important I think they are. K and extreme CPU's should be in classes of their own imo.

No love for the Opteron's and Xeon's of the world? What gives?

As I said in the OP, I know nothing about them. I could include just "Opteron" and "Xeon", but that feels a bit unfair when I was so detailed about the other CPU's...

Also, no VIA? Might as well include all 3 major x86 players! :D

Also in the OP, they will be included. Thinking "Single Core" and "Dual core". As with the Atoms that is a bit unfair, but it'll work imo.

So, should I just put "Xeon" and "Opteron" there as two choices, or should I go research and be more specific or should someone else with knowledge put together a nice list for me?

I believe you should be general and use Opteron and Xeon. There are just too many models/generations in the server realm and the list would become too convoluted.

Could have an "Other" option to fit in for the odd stuff. Wouldn't need a separate list for VIA/etc. Heck, might be folks like me who still use old PPC 7447s from time to time. Although I'm probably the last hold out by now.

I'd avoid sockets too. Just focus on how you are doing it now.

IMO you can remove the K and S ones , the K one are just the same as the non K one , just with an open multiplier , and the S ones just use lower clock's .

Another thing , i would change the "i7 Extreme" to Sandy bridge Extreme as there is the 3930K which is a SB-E CPU but isn't branded as extreme ..

K is for overclocking which is a big difference. I chose S because it'd be interesting to see how popular the "energy saving" models are.

Thanks for your input people, I'll make the vote now!

I fail to see the point of this thread.

Its simple...

Every few years we have a 'what CPU have you got' vote.

Just to see what the folks here at TPU are running. Its a good way to find out which manufacturer is getting our hard earned monies

left out server chips entirely because I know nothing about them

That means I don't get counted. :ohwell: I agree with not categorizing them individually because there are so many models and not that many of us using them, but as said above maybe you can create "Intel Xeon" and "AMD Opteron" categories that will count us.
