Hey guys been a while since I have been on here. I need your advice.

Im looking to buy a new video card and sell my current 4890 (Which how much can I sell that for know)

Should I get another 4890 and do crossfire

Or should I get 7850, 7870, 7950, or 7970

Money not the biggest issue just need a good deal!

Do not crossfire your 4890, they are 3 generations behind, slower than a single 7850/70 etc and only DX 10, power hungry etc etc I could go on.

Price performance wise the 7950 is the best of the bunch especially if you get a non ref one and overclock it.

Retire the 4890 and get a 7850 or 7970. The other 2 is not so worth it imo.

I just purchased a 7950 from ATI. If you are into overclocking, look no further. Brought it from 850 to 1200, maxes everything. Also, receive 3.5 games.

ATI drivers have issues, I have problems with both my laptop 6850 and desktop drivers when it comes to HDMI, and switchable graphics between 2 different graphics cards. Just be aware of this. The graphics due to games and stability seem to be OK, never CTD on either of the machines due to drivers or graphics card. CCC is a bit of a pain in the ass.

Nvidia drivers are nothing substantial, but they work. You might have a problem with overclocking on NV cards, but they come out of the box in full force. Stability seems on par with the AMD drivers, and if you want something that you will never have to worry about tweaking to get to work, this is a great decision.

The most important decision is the company you buy from, their warranty, how they design their card, and please for the love of all things, google the track record of the card and read reviews to make sure it is what you want.

There is nothing new coming out unless you are looking for a 7890, which will perform a bit worse than the 7950, and also come with fewer free games.

The games come as coupons, so if you already have them, you can trade / sell them. Or give them to people for their free video card advice.

+1 on the 7950,after upgrading to an I5 i rarely get dips under 60fps (no less than 55) on BF3 every thing ultra and 4xmsaa at 1920x1200 with my card clocked at 1ghz core,if you get an aftermarket cooled model you can go significatly higher.

...I have problems with both my laptop 6850 and desktop drivers when it comes to HDMI...

Would you mind elaborating on this? I had problems with a MSI 660 Ti detecting my TV as HDCP capable, which it is. It would boot up on HDMI, but I got BSOD when switching from TV to PC input on the display. The Nvdia HD Audio device would always show as unplugged in the W7 sound panel too, despite it's driver being installed.

I'm considering trying a 7970, but I'm worried about driver or worse HDMI problems. I took my PC tower to a friend's place and none of this was a problem on his TV though, so I'm thinking it could be wither my TV or the secondary HDMI ports on it. I'll probably use the primary HDMI port on the TV with next GPU I try if I have these problems.

If that solves it I may get a 3 input to 1 output HDMI switching box and connect my PC and Blu-ray player to two of the inputs and the output to my receiver. The weird thing is though, my GTS 250 detects my TV as HDMI capable even when my PC is connected to a secondary HDMI port on the TV, and it has no problem switching from TV to PC.

AMD has been working on a 12.11 Beta Driver for awhile which has been getting alot of user feedback, Im assuming what you see now will become the 12.12 driver since it would appear drivers are released every other month now.

Id Honestly get a 7950 that is Reference Spec

That doesn't tell me what the actual HDMI problem is. From what you're saying it sounds like HDMI audio or something is not working with the latest drivers, but why would it be any better on ref cards? All non ref cards usually are is cards with diff coolers, sometimes diff PCBs. The ports and chipsets remain the same for the most part, so the drivers should work for both.

Reference Models are ones for mods etc if youre into that kind of thing. Tend to be the most compatible with Software that handle volts, fan speed, and overclocking.

HDMI honestly is a lil sensitive with cables and connections, easy to short or break the cable internally or at the plug or even the jack itself, even contacts of the plug and jack becomes weak. Issues with DVI and VGA were hardly ever reported because of the robustfullness of those connectors (Bulkier and harder to remove because of the anchoring screws.

I'm familiar with AMD having some driver quirks, usually being a bit slower to tweak them for new games coming out. Honestly though, this is the first I've heard of their drivers working better with ref vs non ref cards. In fact a LOT of people swear by and recommend non ref AMD cards.

Also, no one has addressed the specifics of the HDMI problems mentioned, which is what I asked about. Until I hear the details and confirmation from other AMD owners that ref cards are the only trustworthy ones, I'll have to take this with a grain of salt.

Having to go with ref AMD cooler is NOT something I want to do. Their ref coolers aren't very quiet

Re-read my post. Otherwise if youre so worried about HDMI not working just use the DVI and a Audio adapter.

btw FYI read up current as of June/July

You can always get a different cooler for the card but I was just stating the benefit of the reference vs non reference, as AMD releases drivers focused at the reference designs. (Yes AMD uses their own designed boards for driver development and testing)

I would suggest 7950 as well, or if you have moneys for it 7970. (I wouldn't reccomend HIS 7950, I have a friend that got one and no cooling for VRMs and one got hot and blew up melting a bit of the pcb with it. Card still works fine tho; :wtf:) Unless you could be swayed to the green side, Muahahaha.

if that occurred within the warranty period id suggest RMA for it (who knows what else will start failing after that part went bad). Unless if you have time and resources to repair it yourself

I don't need to "re-read" your post, I got the gist of what you said the first time. I'd also probably go with a Sapphire were I to get a non ref AMD card, since they usually adhere to AMD's spec where things other than coolers are concerned and have been an ATI partner longer than anyone.

And the link you provided doesn't indicate anything at all about the AMD cards themselves having HDMI problems. In fact it suggests user error in not setting up the HDMI Audio as the default device, or the card itself being defective. Nothing there is an acknowledgement of AMD having driver issues regarding HDMI, ref or non ref.

I've yet to see any actual proof of HDMI problems with AMD cards or non ref AMD cards in general having poor driver support, esp Sapphire ones.

This is the first I've heard of this problem. Is this something widespread? Personal? Someone you know?

Just to clarify, are you saying the same thing I just did a bit earlier about not hearing of HDMI being a problem with AMD cards, esp his implying it's mainly just non reference AMD cards?

Like I said, I'd rather non ref 7000 series card owners weigh in on this. I'll make a poll thread if I have to.

I was adding more to what I was saying but dont be a punk trying to be argumentive with myself or others here. You will no longer receive help from me, you will be lucky if you do with an attitude like that, so piss off

end/rant

Yeah the "rant" is clearly all yours. You just went and started an insulting flame war over nothing more than not being able to tolerate understandable skepticism from myself, which was apparently echoed by a mod as well.

I was merely pointing out no one has actually given any solid proof of these claims of HDMI problems or non ref driver issues with AMD cards. That's hardly "being a punk" and excuse me but it was not actually even an argument until you turned it into one.

Asking someone to explain details rather than post up links that don't even apply to the issue mentioned is not arguing, it's merely requesting a little clarity after obvious confusion. It isn't so much that I wanted to ignore you by asking for others to weigh in as much as seeing it as necessary when you weren't responding to what I said in a manner that made sense.

I find it absurd you should be telling anyone not to be an argumentative "punk" with yourself or anyone here when you randomly jump in and try to answer a question posed to someone else in such a way that neither clarifies any details, nor gives any proof of your claims.

Post reported, and no, I don't imagine I'll be missing your idea of "help", esp when you can't control your emotions or even back up your claims.

Of those I'd def go for the Vapor X. In fact I was just looking for one yesterday and couldn't seem to find any after someone in the UK asked about it and bought one based on raves from others whom bought it. Apparently he likes his too and is getting great results. Thanks for the link, just might pick that one up myself.
