I originally thought that the Asus 7970 Matrix platinum was the best single card GPU (Minus the gtx690, is this correct. If i am wanting to spend up to $750, would the 7970 be the best option?

for gaming? no the gtx 680/90 is is bit over 3% better, but anything to do with computing u cant go wrong with an hd7970 since a single chip 7970 can beat a 690 in computing capabilities

I'd say go for a CF of 7970GHz edition i don't see the need to spend $750 on a single card, if its not dual GPU

HD 7970 GHz Edition is a great choice. Keep in mind the HD 8900 series is coming in Q1-Q2 2013.

I'd say get a HD7970 and overclock it to a GHz Edition or get a GTX670 and overclock it to a GTX680. but looking at W1zzards latest review Club3d HD 7870 jokerCard the HD 7970 GHz beats the GTX680 in most benches... But not by much and remember both top cards can arguable be the best if someone overclocks them... You can't go wrong with either card.. So, I'd get the cheapest with the most Vram and right now that card is the HD 7970 @ $379.99 with a $20 MIR which brings it to $359.99.

I play a wide variety of games but i spend the majority of my time playing WoW, which i know does not require such an overkill graphics card. So, for WoW, GTX680>HD7970?

Yes 680/7970GHz, which are still overkill. You cant go wrong with either of them.

While the difference isn't much in gaming, I don't know why people are saying the GTX 680 is better than the HD7970 GHZ edition. According to Wizzards reviews, with the 12.11 drivers, the 7970 ghz edition out performs the GTX 680 at all resolutions higher than 1680*1050, and even the regular HD7970 outperforms the GTX 680 at 2560*1600 resolution(which happens to be my current resolution).
