I have a computer that I just built. Most of the components are used except for the HDD and the PSU. I am having a problem with trying to get it to display on the monitor I use. The specs are as follows:
MSI 785g-E53 motherboard
G. Skill RAM DDR3 2 x 4GB
AMD Phenom II X4 955
AMD XFX 6950 reference design
Coolermaster Hyper 212+
Corsair CX600

When I start it up, everything turns on fine and dandy but there is no display. I tried to use the two different DVI ports and even the HDMI port on the GPU. Nothing. I tried the DVI, VGA, and HDMI on the motherboard and nothing as well. The GPU is correctly seated, same goes for the cpu, and i made sure that the RAM is in the right slots. I ended up getting another pc that works for sure and swapped the GPUs and nothing. I put the 6950 in the pc that works and nothing. I even put the working GPU from the PC that works in the computer that doesn't display anything and nothing. I think it may be something with the motherboard. It has some LEDs on the mobo but when I turn them on, all of them are on. This doesn't make sense to me.

I did get the CPU, GPU, RAM, Mobo, and case all together from somebody that just gutted their system of the HDD and PSU when they upgraded. Everything worked and all - at least I think. Any suggestions? I am gonna swap out CPUs since I have another CPU that fits that socket available.

Make sure your in the proper PCIE Slot and make sure your monitor is set to DVI or HDMI depending what your on. Make sure the GPU is seated and make sure the video cable is tight.

Just gotta ask... not trying to be smart or anything; but, did you connect the two six pin power connectors on the card?
Did you try enabling the slot in the bios?

Did you try the XFX 6950 in the good PC; or, the known good card in the suspected bad motherboard? Nevermind, I figured it out.

Tried a different monitor?

Take ESD Precautions- Read the Motherboard manual- IIRC 785 Chipset had IGP (Ensure monitor is hooked up properly and turned on)

Remove Motherboard, powersupply, video card, hdd, optical drives out of case and run everything on a non conductive bench

Update Bios if not done already

Reseat Ram, Ensure Video card is seated properly and cable is hooked up to right spot (test Using IGP first- read motherboard manual on how mobo configures itself depending on if a video card is present or not)- including power supply leads to it, Ensure power supply leads to motherboard are hooked up

Clear CMOS/BIOS/UEFI.

He does not need to build it out of the box. The board is firing up no video.

ive had several instances of the issue where taking the board out of the case completely allowed the video card to fire right up.

I have used two different monitors too. I tested the vid card in my own pc a few days ago and that works. I have cleared/reset CMOS. All power connections are there and everything is seated snugly. For one thing, I do not know how to update the bios when I cannot see anything. The mobo may have somthing wrong with it

Grounding issue, the fans would spin and stop. The board is totally firing up as it seems by his description.

I'd say it's a good idea to assemble it out of the box and take all of eidairaman1's suggestions, as the mobo could easily be shorting on the case. By the sound of this, there's no system beep either, a sure sign that the board is not starting properly.

@tacosRcool take eidairaman1 suggestions and try those things out, it'll put you in a very good position to figure out what's wrong. There's no system beep, is there?

Also, try putting those suspect components into the working PC - one by one - and see if it all works. Also, seating of the components can be a little off, stopping it from working, even though it all looks perfect. I've had that with graphics cards several times, especially with the big, heavy ones. Also try cleaning the connectors on the mobo and cards with a little isopropyl alcohol if you can, as a little crap in there can stop it too. Finally, do you have the auxiliary PSU connector plugged into the mobo? And along the same lines, do you know for sure that PSU is working properly?

My gut instinct is that it's either a short somewhere or a duff mobo, but you need to take those steps to find out.

Yea there is no system beep. Yea I will remove everything and rebuild it bit by bit. It has 4 pin connector on the mobo which I did plug in. I made sure the graphics card is re-seated and everything I made sure was re-seated. I will have time to do all this later on today.

Ok. I connected it to my other computer parts and figured out that the GPU, RAM, PSU, and CPU are not to blame. I do believe its the motherboard. I did try my own 750 Watt PSU and it still does not boot on correctly and display anything. Well it looks like it has a problem with it and I am gonna look at getting a new one since this one is used and really not worth the hassle. Plus this is the second time I had horrible problems with MSI motherboards.

just because the fans are spinning doesn't mean the board is posting
sounds to me like the motherboard is dead
if all else fails try clearing the cmos and booting with the on-board video ONLY
you buying something USED != msi's problem

I bought another MSI and the usb controllers short circuited and burnt $120+ of stuff. Not even a week. Did all suggestions. Gonna get another mobo. At least I got a sweet deal on most of the parts

I smell user error that doesn't happen unless you screw up and don't mount something right the usb ports have FUSES either that or the psu was a cheap model with improper grounding loop

make sure you get a board with at least a 8+2 Phase vrm if you intend on overclocking that Phenom II

No this was for my old i5 motherboard for the MSI that short circuited my usb controllers. My PSU is not cheap (Corsair TX 750 V2). For that motherboard one day it just made a loud pop sound and smoke and the smell of burnt electronics filled my case. Everything was were they should be. I just sent that back to get the motherboard I have listed in my computer specs.

The AM3 motherboard that I am having trouble with. This is what I am building currently. I got a deal on it since somebody decided to upgrade. Well not that much of a loss since I was gonna upgrade the motherboard anyways.

I also I did try to connect everything outside the case on my desk. Still nothing

The problem is always due to the graphic card failure. I have a lot of experience with this problem.
Its simple as this.
1. If you have an external graphic card and you get this problem. Then probably your graphic cards busted.
2. If you have an integrated graphic card and you get this problem. Well, Sorry but its about time you replace your motherboard.
Integrated graphics are not fixable.
3. If its the external problem. Then switch to the integrated graphic card (Thats if you have one) or get a new graphics card either with your warranty (if its valid) or buy one.

its not a matter of respect its a matter of having some basic know how and some common sense something a lot of places(not just TPU) seem to be lacking
