I have a really expensive card that arrived damaged to me.
It has a resistor broken off on the back. (I think that is what it is, not a electronics expert)
I need to know the model number for this resistor because, I think I can solder it back on.
I don't have a lot of experience soldering things, but I have fixed a couple of things before.

I have seen similar looking resistors on a back of older LGA775 cpu's (mostly Pentium 4's).
Are these the same? Can I take one off an old cpu?
Also, what are the chances that this board is already fried if someone used it after resistor broke off?

(this ruler measures centimeters)

Another question: On the front of the board, there is a coil component, that that has a 4R7 mark on the top. Like that:

The problem is that the top cap with "4R7" mark is damaged - a part of it is missing. I was wondering if it will affect its' performance.

EDIT:
I also don't have any soldering equipment on hand and not sure what best to buy for this kind of precision work.
Any advice would be appreciated. :toast:

I think the seller knew that the item is damaged, but sent it to me anyway.
I'm pissed and can return it, but I would like to keep the card if it is possible to fix it, because it is normally a $500 card and I paid less than $200 for it. it it wasn't for the price like that, I wouldn't bother.
The card is Emulex LPE12002-E.

This. If you damage it then it is your fault and your short 200 dollars. I would send it back.

Just out of curiosity, what do you need Fibre Channel for?

Not worth the risk so like others have said send it back and just keep saving for the card if you must have one.

The card might not even work in the 1st place and soldering parts to it might just disallow you sending it back.

I have seen this with some old ATI cards how ever the parts came of in post and upon checking the solder it looked really old and dry so just in case check the package just to make sure.

Yeah, I let the seller know that I removed the sticker that he used to cover up the spot where resistor is missing... So, will also have to see what he says.
I don't think I can damage the card, as long as I use correct resistor. I can measure resistance with my handy multimeter on existing resistors and then buy a similar one.

I buy a lot of fibre channel cards. My personal use of these cards is limited to just testing used cards, but I actually buy them for my work.

Yeah, I checked the packaging. There are no components in the box.
This is by far not the first card that I received damaged and I know exactly how they get damaged.
I bet a lot of these cards were thrown in a pallet. I've seen companies do that, they just don't care.

As far as card not working even with resistor installed - that might be a possibility, but hey, it's all a gamble!

i dont think the missing component is a resistor, judging from the look of it and the code C124 written on the PCB it is likely a capacitor....

You checked if the 2 points of solder are still fixed to the pcb just in case it's lifted off ?.. Maybe contact the company see if they will send you a blue print of the board and what part it is although i am thinking they will want you to send it in though..

Is this the same card ?.

Maybe ask the seller to post better pics of the back of the card hehe.. And from what i can tell there is not sticker were i believe that missing part is although hard to tell and it's the only picture i found on the rear of the card.

Same model, but different seller. Points are still fixed to the board.

I just tracked that resistor and it seems to be going to a place on a board where there are installed components. So, it might be working after all.
