Found this article over at MaximumPC titles "Microsoft to Shoot Messenger on March 15, 2013".

Microsoft acquired Skype nearly two years ago for $8.5 billion, but hasn't really done anything major with it since then. By retiring Messenger and migrating users over to Skype, Microsoft has a chance to grow its service and sell premium Skype features to a much wider audience. This has been the plan since at least November 12 when Microsoft first confirmed its plans to shut down Messenger, saying it would happen sometime in the first quarter of 2013.

So, if, you are a user and did not already know or get the email from MS; then, you know now.
They will, supposedly, have the free account, pay per minute, pay per month, skype premium, and skype credit.

Skype is free and is not garbage.

And i too miss netsend.

I think i read somewhere that lync will remain.. Iirc.

Skype is still free for one-on-one video and voice chat and IM.

You can link a skype account to your msn account and have your contacts on skype.

I wouldn't call it an upgrade but more if a merge though.

Since it's part of a very lucrative enterprise solution, probably. How many different names has it had? In office 2007 I remember it as "Communicator"
