I've never ever seen people, as a whole, act so negatively towards a product's price like this.

I think the state of the global economy contributes to it. I have a hard time justifying 100% more price for 20% more power though. That's a hard pill to swallow for me and apparently for a lot of people as well.

Forgive my French, but isn't it in the end the same thing??

Not at all. I would not want to pay anything for it, I don't even want it, but I think $1000 is reasonable. The reason is that it is the fastest single GPU out there, it has a technical flair to it, the power figures are quite impressive and it simply is a premium product. A $1000 launch price is totally fine with me. It might come down a bit in time to more "humane" prices, unless Nvidia releases an entirely new product line that makes this obsolete.

For a while the 7970 held that crown but AMD didn't charge $1000 USD for it. I don't see any reason why nVidia should either. No justification other than their greed.

$700 and that's because is has 6gb if it had less like 3-4gb no more than $550.
@W1zzard - out of curiosity , what was the highest vram usage you have seen with these cards? thanks.

But that was just a "normal" card release. Titan isn't. IMO.

IT 1000% is not normal.. it's 12 months "late", which makes the price an even bigger thing.

IF we listen to NVidia's posts when 7970 came out, this card is the real GTX680, so it's late, overpriced, and definitely no Titan. Unless of course, Titans are slow, unproductive animals that leave big steaming piles all over...

I want the performance it offers, for sure. Thing is, I already have better performance from dual 7950's, that cost 1/2 what Titan did. Dual-GPU/Single monitor issues are next to non-existent for me, so offering that performance with a single GPU isn't all that great. THe low power usage is nice...the OC stuff built in is nice. But I'd buy 3x7970 first.

Man, you know it's not a good sign when Cadaveca even says that he would opt for three 7970s. I agree though, it's a nice GPU with a terrible price point not to mension showing up a bit more than fashionably late. It was so late, it missed the party.

That is one way to look at it for sure, but I don't. :)

But clearly many do. I mean, GK110 was out long ago in compute cards, so this is no new chip. It's even in the NV advertising...super-computer VGA.

It was so late, it missed the party.

Seriously was. I bought 3rd 7900-series card like less than a month ago. Had I known Titan was coming, or it was launch with GTX680, I would have bought Titan. 1000%. What held me off from GTX690 was that I already had 2x 7950. Same story with Titan.

But NVidia will sell lots, so I wish them all the luck, and hope that next year, or in the fall, they have something as good in the next gen. I'll save my money for a PS4 instead, anyway. :p Titan launch has only convinced me towards Sony. I am curious how many others feel the same way.

GTX 280 was a bigger die-size 576mm released in 2008 at $649.

I find it hard that +4yrs later and still suck at making your own design that it comes out less then expected "cripple" and still charge more for a product release.

It makes you laugh at the better half of 2012 Nvidia keep mention they didnt have problems with GK110 and yield issues were fine. Not to mention how they kept bragging about how close there TSMC relationship was closer then any other company, B.S.

As mentioned before if they would have stuck to the GK110 as the flagship chip for 600 series it would have been released 10months after the 7970 at the earliest.

Reality sets in they screwed up and have to make up for it by charging more.

I dont see much progress here.

$1000 is steep, I think it would be a steal at $700.

To me, Titan should be $749, at MOST. Right between the 680 and the 690.

And with a piss-take price like this, no wonder. This card is the real successor to the GTX 580, not the midrange GTX 680 which they passed off as high end and priced the same as the GTX 580 (it's a bit less now). Compare the performance to that card and it's a great jump worth replacing the 580 for.

If AMD had released a better product in the 7970 maybe we would have gotten GK100 within a reasonable time frame, and it would have been called the GTX680--but Nvidia took the path of optimal profit, nobody can fault them for that.

I really don't understand why people are so pissy about this card. Yea, it's expensive, and probably a little overpriced, but it is the most powerful single gpu on the market. For people that want amazing performance and don't want to deal with SLi or Crossfire at all, it's probably worth the extra hundred dollars. Whenever a new dual-gpu card comes out with a crazy price tag I don't see people ripping into it, yet somehow Titan is where they draw the line?

Should have been priced at $700, and I probably would have bought one for that price. $1k is a joke, though if I had $2k to spend I'd probably do it on a pair of these.

Applenomics? Only Steve Jobs can get away with it and it gave him cancer. :slap: Too soon ?

About the whole Single GPU thing. Even Nvidia doesnt buy that since they sent out 3 card to each reviewer. That arguement would work for a single but what does it say when the very same company send them 3.

Contradiction in marketing aswell.

The 580 was also the fastest single GPU on the planet and cost half the price. That's why people are pissed.

Normally, the new versions are priced the same as the old versions, but give better performance, not cost more for the better performance, which is a retrograde step and actually stagnates performance improvements as people either can't afford to buy those products or refuse to.

It's not hard to see why nvidia did this though. The Kepler architecture is obviously very fast and power efficient, plus manufacturing yields on such a huge GPU must have been bad, which delayed them by a lot. Therefore they took the path of optimal profit, as you say (great line that!) and flogged the midrange version as a high end part, while making the real GTX 680 an "ultra high end" part. Only I don't think it's performance is good enough to call it "ultra", just "excellent".

Ironically, I think calling it TITAN when it can't dethrone their GTX 690 makes for a bit of an embarrassment. Marketing cockup 101 there. The fact it's named after the Titan supercomputer that the K20 sits in is irrelevent in this context.

It should have been 650 and no more, this card is practically the real 680, and should be priced accordingly, but Nvidia believes hey we forgot about it since the 7970 was not as fast on release so take this 8800Ultra price again

no way man, I like Nvidia cards but fuk that.

Yes. All in all it's frustrating and I'm disappointed. GF110 brought almost double the performance of GT200, GK110 doubles the performance of GF110 but this time it costs double the money. All this in a time when everything desktop is struggling to survive, when games can be played on a myriad of devices and the most popular ones are free on mobile platforms. When the most widespread GPU used for gaming (according to Steam survey) is the Intel HD3000 and the first current gen card is placed on 20th place (GTX670).

The PS4 and the new Xbox will probably provide high quality graphics for games at an affordable price. For all the rest, tablets and other devices will be enough.

so it's Fermi Part 2, "this time we didn't also screw up power and heat, still late, has disabled parts of the gpu, too expensive, and not at the performance we wanted though"
