Hello guys,

I currently have outdated pc, and I'm planing on changing the whole platform this summer, but now I'm in opportunity to get new GPU.
I can't decide whether I should buy 7970 or gtx 670 since I'm planing to play future games on 1080p, and what I really wanted to ask you is: should I buy one of those cards or is it smarter to wait for the new generation of cards or even new platform ??

Im planing on buying one of these:

ASUS GeForce GTX 670 Direct CU II TOP 2 GB
Gainward GeForce GTX 670 Phantom
Sapphire HD 7970 Vapor-X

Last question:

In the case I would buy one of those cards, I would have it on my current configuration which has Cheiftec 550 W PSU, it's 5 years old. Do you think that something can go wrong especially if I use 7970 which uses more power then 670?

the 7970 is a better card it can easily get 15% free performance on stock volts(1.17v) if you get it to 1.25v stable you should be getting 20%-30%. though the Vapor-x is a bit loud the dual-x is slightly worse binned but overclocks more easily as it doesn't have boost. I have a friend who has a 670 and quite frankly dynamic boost makes OCing a pain.
Q1 Q2 and Q3 of 2013 there are definitely no new GPUs from AMD I don't know about nvidia as they are silent

If you have a Chieftec Smart Power GPS-550A it looks like it has 3x 12v rails @20amps. Just divide the load between 2 rails and you should be fine. That powersupply has a 6pin and a 6+2pin and they both should be on separate rails. 20amps+20amps should be fine to feed those cards at stock (GTX670 req 30amps), but if you plan to overclock then you could run into some problems with the HD7970. The PSU brandonwh64 posted is a good PSU, and can handle those cards as well. The biggest reason is that it has a single 12v @38amps. If it where me I'd buy the card and then get a better PSU down the road that will allow you to sli or cf and overclock. :toast:

If your psu has at least 38A on its 12v rail then you should be able to(assuming it's single rail)
I would buy a new psu because 5 years is longer than the average psu already. I have not had a psu last that long ever.

I also think you will see a bottleneck running a 7970 with your e8200 dual core. Not all games but some games.

By all means DO IT but do it in style and get the EVGA SSC version and get an Antec 600w or higher PSU

I live in Croatia, and unfortunately, I can't find EVGA's gtx 670 anywhere, in my local store there are only those cards which I wrote in my first post.
My goal is to make new configuration, which can last as long as possible, just like my current computer, which did pretty good job in 5 years.

As I mentioned I'm planing to play on 1080p, and I probably won't buy any larger screen in the future. Which of those 3 cards would you recommend to me, which of them will last the most(longest time to play on high details)?

I also found this PSU in my local store, will that be enough?

As I said, I would have that card on my current computer temporarily until I get new processor and everything in about 2 or 3 months.

Whichever exact model your PSU is, it's enough for GTX 670. 7970 would be risky, +100W of power draw at max load. GTX 670 draws up to 160W, just ~40W more than your current 8800 GT.

That would be a perfectly fine PSU.

Still recommend the Evga GTX670 FTW 2GB card.

your Core 2 Duo will bottleneck it a bit though, but once you get a new chip things should be all good.

Even the CX500 watts will work. If you've read reviews and user testing, you'll find out that a 7950 at 7970 clocks will perform almost exactly the same. The extra shaders doesn't seem to do much. I'm not a fan of OC but the 7950 doesn't seem to be less capable than 7970 so there's minimum risk especially if you OC to 7970 level.

Good luck with your build. TBH, if you have to wait 3 months to get the CPU then you might as well wait til to get the GPU. It should be cheaper by then or you have that much time to find a steal of a deal.

well i would go for amd for two reasons...,7970 i top single chip in their tier!! amd have been working hard with game developers who release big game titles.. so games will be beter coded for amd chips.. and i think ur psu can handle both those gpus but do not think oc them!!or even oc ur cpu!! leave everything at stock for the moment..,when u get new build oc the hell out of them!! :)
sretno jarane sa novim racunarom!!

Thanks for your advices guys.

I decided to get XFX 7970 DD because it gives more performance than same priced Gainward's 670.

Hopefully I made a good decision!
