Finally, I been waiting for this for a long long time. I've played a good amount with the current widescreen patcher and had my fun, but thats a bit buggy. Finally someone wised up and realized the best AoE game should be on Steam. Price is ab it high, but honestly, I don't even care, I want it!

And best part is, Isometric games age pretty gracefully. I still it looks good, especially considering it's age.

Steam Store Page

The rumors were true. Age of Empires II HD (which includes the content from the Conquerors expansion) is coming to Steam in April. And it’s been aged up to the Modern Era (courtesy of Hidden Path Entertainment), with a host of tweaks and new features. We’ve got more details and a graphical comparison below.

For my money, AoE2 was already one of the nicer-looking games of the 2D isometric era. With the HD release, a fresh coat of paint and a vastly expanded resolution will make it look even nicer. You can almost see the contemplative expression on the face of a knight undergoing conversion. “Wololo, you say? Well… that really does make sense, now that I think about it. Red team for life!”

Here’s an example of the original game, running at the native 800×600 resolution:

And here is Age 2 HD, cruising along at a respectable 1920×1080:

We’re also getting Steam Workshop (because, let’s face it, making custom maps based on Back to the Future was half of the fun of Age 2), multi-monitor support, and a small army of other technical improvements. And it’s only going to cost you $20.

I like AoE 1 more, its campaigns are priceless. AoE2 didn't impress, really.

HECK YEAH!

This is awesome!
I miss playing this game so much. It was my first RTS game I really got into and spent tons of hours playing it.

I can't wait!

I'm hoping next on the list is Empire Earth.

I wish it was $9.99 and not $20 though... damn pricey. I wish I could trade some of my old steam games to someone else in order to have them buy it for me, >.>

I'll probably go in on a 4 pack, but I need to see who else I know that wants it to see how many we have entering.

The game was good, but for 20 dollars, they are pushing it a bit. System Shock 2 was far more epic from my perspective and it cost 10 bucks on GOG and ppl were still saying its too expensive (how, i don't know). But 20 bucks for a ~15 years old game, sorry. I'd wait for it on GOG anyway...

I still think AoE is the best RTS out there, other difference is, it also aged a lot better. 3D games just don't age as well as isometric games. I do think $20 is high, but Steam price for AoE III has always been high as well.

You can't compare rubbish AoE3 with AoE2...

As for the 3D games that aged well and are still aging well, look at Age of Mythology. For me one of the better strategy games after AoE1 and 2 series...

I compared the inflated price, not the game... I think you misunderstood what I said. Just meant that AoE III's price on Steam has always been high, so I can see why AoE II will be a bit high.

All Steam prices are high, unless it's a sale in which case they sometimes come close to physical release prices.

I think it's too expensive at €17. Nice new features though. Would like to know more about the small army of technical improvements.

I almost bought the new maps for Black Ops 2, but changed my mind, glad I did. I can get this for $2 now since I still have that $15 in my steam wallet. :)

I LOVED this game. I'd come to a stage where near the end of the game I'd be killing villagers right and left to build Paladins or Mounted Archers to kill my enemies "creatively". I agree with a number of you that it's probably a little expensive. I'll wait until it's 9.99 or less and pounce!

Unless there's a physical version you have to wait for a sale. Otherwise it will probably still be that price years from now.

How is this thing HD ? Have they actually remastered the buildings and units or they just added support for higher resolutions?

Just added widescreen support, the game looks just fine as it is, the only huge difference I notice from II to III is the water. At least I'm pretty sure of that, within the last year me and Ufgy have played AoEII with the widescreen patcher, and I don't see any real diffferences between these screens and what I seen when I was playing. But maybe they have made some minor tweaks.

I'd say thats pretty good detail for a 14 year old game.
