Hey guys. I bought my PC about 2 months ago, i'm running two HD7970's, ones an Asus Matrix and ones an XFX. In the past i have i had both cards slightly overclocked on stock voltages, however, i started getting artifacts and so reset both to default. After a few weeks without any artifacts, i randomly started getting greyish colored artifacts when running World of Warcraft. So i tested both cards individually and seemed to have no issues with either. So i then re-connected the two together. I had no issues to start and my Furmark scores were as normal but after a few hours, they started to come back. Even when i disabled crossfire they remained. I have tried changed the port for the crossfire cables and the same thing is still happening. I have tried re-inserting both cards several times but the same thing continues to happening. I originally thought that it may be an issue that has to do with the crossfire cable, however i'm thinking it could be to do with my processor. Note: I have not touched the settings on either card since the artifacts and they still continue to occur. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would look at the video cards and PSU(yes, I know, your PSU should be plenty for your set-up). Never heard of a CPU to cause artifacting

How exactly would i know if it was a psu issue? (I have re-connected all of the pins back into the psu) And do you think that it could possibly be the crossfire bridge?

Hi

set system defaults [do not OC while testing]

test each card in the system one at a time; grey flecks *May be Vmem

nb: running Furmark may damage this further [test with games]

Persoanlly, I would start by testing each card seperately. Install just one video card and run furmark with it for a few hours. If you don't get any artifacts, do the samething with the other card. As for testing your PSU, run HWMonitor and post what it says about your voltages. Other than that, the only way I know to test a PSU is by either trying another PSU in your system or trying your PSU in a equal system to yours.

One note, like Law said, Furmark can cause more damage to your video card if one is faulty, but it will show you if one is faulty, and if it is, it's already broken. So yeah.

I have tested each card individually with furmark. I can't leave it going for more than about 15 minutes though cause they get up to 90 degrees fairly quickly even with the fans on 100%.

Oh really? Then your artifacting is coming from over-heating your video cards. What temps do they get to under normal use? Give me acouple minutes and I'll post what temps my 7970 gets in Furmark. I can already say that this is what my 7970 runs at crunching full load-

Hi

It would have helped if you had stuck with the original thread - http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181191

rather than getting repeat answers

nb: If you have third party OC applications installed [uninstall them ~ and reinstall AMD catalyst]

TEST with game that caurses "greyish colored artifacts when running World of Warcraft"

- [greyish colored artifacts] do you see these at post, bios screen and or desktop?

I'm running WoW atm and am getting no artifacts, howver, when i test furmark on its own i only get about 50 FPS whilst it says crossfire is enabled...

I just ran a 1080p 1 minute benchmark. The loads on card 1 (The matrix) sat at around 80% while card 2 was at around 65%. The matrix reached about 75 degrees and the XfX card got to about 70.

Here is the data from HWmonitor:

Hi

I would have helped if you had stuck with the original thread - http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181191

rather than getting repeat answers

nb: If you have third party OC applications installed [uninstall them ~ and reinstall AMD catalyst]

TEST with game that caurses "greyish colored artifacts when running World of Warcraft"

- [greyish colored artifacts] do you see these at post, bios screen and or desktop?

Next

run tests again

.......................................

Next [Second Part crossfireX]

shut down the PC power down the PSU [wait for a couple of minutes], then install the XFX HD 7970 [*Do Not Install the crossfire bridge at this stage] attach the power cables

Next

Power up the PSU, boot into windows; goto catalyst control center and select crossfire

Next

Install latest version of CAPS available here - http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/crossfirex-app-profiles.aspx

I shut down my computer, unplugged the PSU, waited a few minutes, removed both graphics cards and inserted just the Matrix (for the fifth time) and now for some reason it isn't detecting my mouse, keyboard or monitor. I may just take to it be fixed at the place i bought it from :s

In SLI if the SLI bridge is damaged or wrongly placed it can cause weird colors to show up on screen, or even colored lines.
I assume the same could happen in crossfire. I would try reseating the bridge (a few times) or try a new one.

Thanks, i was able to get into my pc and test the cards individually. Both seemed to be fine when tested in both World of warcraft on ultra for 15 minutes and in furmark 1080p for a couple. I have re-installed the 13.1 drivers but was not able to clear them using the program you linked, it said i did not have sufficient privileges even though i was using an admin account. I also re-seated each memory stick individually. I am almost certain now that it must have to do with the crossfire bridge being faulty. Thanks so much for your help, i really appreciate it. :toast:

Do you still get the artifacts when you disable crossfire in the control panel and run the game with crossfire disabled?

There isn't a known issue about this in the driver your currently using is there? Sometimes artifacts happen in drivers and they will be notated under "known problems" in the release notes of the driver.

I had a look in the issues and couldn't see anything about World of Warcraft. I have tested both graphics cards individually in both WoW and furmark, i allowed them to get up to about 85 degrees and didn't see any problems. I think that it must be the crossfire bridge. Can a faulty crossfire bridge cause artifacts and the game to bug out (In the photo that i inserted above). Thanks for your reply.

This is from another thread, http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2856105&postcount=1752

The SLI bridge was not placed properly, so it was causing that issue.
Try to remove and put it back a few times.

Although, theres something that confuses me.
In the link above, the person had to take a picture with a camera because the "yellow blob" wasn't showing when taking a screenshot in game.
That said, not sure anymore if it really is the bridge.

I understand you tested them individually, but I'm asking if you tried with both cards in and disabling crossfire if you still get the artifact.

Also if it's only in this game, it's probably not the bridge and it may not even be a problem with the card since if it was then it should be artifacting (of some kind) in other games as well.

What driver are you on?

The problem is on the card since he can take a ss of the game and it captures the corruption which means it's in the frame buffer.

There's also a W7 update (KB2670838) that was causing yellow roads in BF3 with the newest nVidia drivers. I'm kind of wondering if this might be related.

after reading all the things you posted, it is either a driver related problem, or your cards are overheating. also there is no need to overclock. specially since you are using 7950s.

so take off the overclock and let them run stock.

btw 90C is not hot enough for a GPU to go bad.

if you have a OC on the CPU, you should try taking that off too.

Most cold solder problems start slowly and become more noticible... may only do it sparingly at first.

90c is not bad for the core but if the pcb heats and cools under high temperatures the board can warp and this can exacerbate cold solder problems.

Lastly... I myself would never run a card at 90c even under load.... There should be no reason to. Just pull the coolers off, wipe all the gunked on shit that the manufacturer put on the core and use the credit card method to reaply thermal paste... Your core temps should drop a good 20 celsius under load. If they don't then you need more airflow in the case.

One last question? I can't remember if you posted full gpuz temps in the last thread, but what are the other temps on the cards? VRM phase 1,2,3, memory, and shaders?
