What Melvis is trying to say is currently the AMD AM3+ socket has a longer lifespan than the Intel 1155 socket since Intel have stated with Haswell release, they will be changing the socket.

Who knows when AMD will be changing their socket as there has been no announcement.

So in Melvis opinion, getting the AMD based CPU with a better GPU and upgrading the AMD CPU at a later date will allow you to have a longer lasting system.

But then again, we also have to put into perspective of what current AMD CPU is the equivalent to the 2500K.

If there is nothing which currently matches the 2500k in games and seems to be far off with potential release and pricing is higher, then no point going for and AMD based system.

Overall I am happy with my 2500k and 7870 system which runs games at 1080p very well.

I wouldn't buy a 3570K over an 8320. Same price and with AMD being used in both the PS4 and supposedly the Xbox guess which way threading is going. For a future-proof inexpensive the FX series is impossible to beat.

another opinion

hey tosh
if you were going with a slightly higher price tag then consider this set up

mobo:ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 AM3+ uATX $89.99
ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3 AM3+ AMD 760G HDMI USB 3.0 uATX...

i myself am using this mobo with a fx 8350it only has sata 2 ports so its a little slower but with a mechanical hard drive there would be no difference in speed by opting for sata 3

hdd:SanDisk Extreme 120 $99.99
SanDisk Extreme SDSSDX-120G-G25 2.5" 120GB SATA II...

although this is a sata 3 ssd it will max out the sata 2 port speeds on the above mentioned mobo and you will have the benefit of trim working under windows 7 or 8, and you can use the same drive on a sata 3 mobo.
i am running 2 crucial m4s in raid 0 and have a 1tb samsung hdd

optical drive:LG Black 10X BD-ROM $39.99
LG Model UH12NS29 Black 12X Blu-ray Combo Drive - ...

i have the same drive, been using it for almost a year and hasn't given me any issues. You can watch movies on blu-ray discs and it will burn cds and dvds, plus its very quiet in use

psu:COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M700 $99.99
COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M700 RS-700-AMBA-D3 700W ...

this was my 1st psu, nice and quiet and rock solid. The other thing about it is that it has flat cables, long before any other manufacturer started using flat cables to make cabling easier and its modular.

ram:CORSAIR Vengeance Low Profile 8GB $64.99
CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM...

i'm suggesting low profile to avoid height conflict with cpu coolers and CORSAIR because i find them most compatible with amd and intel.

cpu:AMD FX-6300 $139.99
AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz (4.1GHz Turbo) Socket A...

this cpu has 3 cores but handles 6 threads and will auto overclock to 4.1 when single threaded apps are active. i believe the idle and load power is less than the 965 pII, although i could be wrong

gpu:HIS IceQ Turbo 7850 $199.99
HIS IceQ Turbo H785QT2G2M Radeon HD 7850 2GB 256-b...

i had the 7870 version in crossfire and they are very cool and quiet, plus the heat is exhausted out the back of the case, unlike the sapphire model which although is quiet (had 2 7950 dual x in crossfire) does dump the heat into the case

total $735

although slightly more than your estimated budget, you do get more from this suggestion and you can upgrade the mobo with a better one when it comes along.
i've got my fingers crossed for ASUS releasing a 990fx gene board

if you go the intel route bear in mind if you want to upgrade to a better cpu you might also need to upgrade the mobo too.

you could fit all this in a nice silverstone ps07 uATX case and save yourself a little space too

Ditch the case and find something local. The rest shouldn't be to terribly bad. I know how the Puerto Rico thing is as that's almost $90 to ship to my current APO address.

never wanted to insult anyone but dude ...,are u stupid or what??
my god haters everywhere!!
fx 8350 is beter then i5 3570k in many tests!! and is cheaper...that is all u need to know!!
and for this guy setup..its waste that 2500k to use with that mainboard.
it overclockable cpu but mainboard doeasnt suport overclocking..either change cpu or mainboard...!!

The 8350 is only faster in heavily threaded applications that OP would most likely never use anyway. And even if he did use them, clock-clock the 3570k just rips the whole FX line to shreads to such an extent the IVY is on a whole different level of performance.

With that being said the 8350 is cheaper for a reason. These are both unlocked processors with the same level of OC ability when used with most mainstream enthusiast level cooling solutions. The charts where you see the 8350 squeak past the Intel part the 8350 has 8 threads and is clocked something like 600 Mhz higher. Put them both at a good 24/7 OC. Lets just say 4.5 Ghz and you see the 8350 actually losing in a few heavily multithreded applications and being completely dominated in virtually everything else including gaming. The apps the 8350 comes out ahead in are negligiable margins while it gets :nutkick: until it :respect::respect: to Intel in everything else

All the while the FX consumes way more power. Even in the US where energy is "cheap" you will make back that few measly extra dollars you spent for the better proc in 6 months time going with IVY. While I disagree with the way he posted his nonsensical comment; for a gaming PC I can see 0 reasons to go with an FX over a 3570k. Even if price is a factor it's worth saving the few extra bucks until you can afford the VASTLY SUPERIOR IVY

It doesn't mean that is what you want. It depends on what you do with the machine and in general Intel machines cost more than AMD for similar capability. Yeah, AMD can be slower but in most cases that really doesn't matter and the result of it will be negligible considering both CPUs have stuff that they're good at.

Also, someone getting an FX chip very well might already know that it eat powers (but not as much as you're talking about. The i5 doesn't sip power either, keep in mind TDP is only how much of the consumed energy gets turned into heat. In the real world a circuit consumes more power than the TDP because only part of the consumed energy gets converted to heat.

This is a double edged sword though, because of this you may notice that Intel chips run really hot in comparison to AMD chips when your start overclocking them. An AMD chip can consume much more power and a smaller fraction of that consumed power gets turned into heat.

All in all, both AMD and Intel makes a good processor. No matter if you decide to go either or, I think you'll be happy with what you get.

Also I bought a 3820. It has a 130-watt TDP. Intel chips can eat power too and I'm more than happy to feed it. Also try running 1.45-1.50v cooled with air on a regular SB chip and see what happens. There are benefits to having a CPU with a higher rated TDP and from my own experience, higher TDP chips tend handle higher voltages better than lower TDP chips. Could be luck of the draw for me, but I don't think it is.

hi tosh
first: my suggestion for build you can see it in attachment.
second: my thoughts about build i have suggested.
i am not very deep in tech like some guys that gave comments so far but i think i share same problem as you and that is limited funds for new/upgrade pc. so here are my thoughts about parts i have suggested. i will skip burner and hdd since those are parts that arent so expensive and can be changed relatively easy.

MB: asrock is the cheapest 990fx solution. its not best one but its very decent and it is good base for nice long lasting rig. amd planes are to keep am3+ socket alive for at least this and next years and maybe even more so you can have this mb for a lot of time (i doubt in next 3-4 years there will be game that can make cpu to bottleneck your rig) and just change cpu when you think its worthy. for now it has all you can need sata3, usb3, 2x PCIe x16, up to 32gb ram etc. and can handle some OC too.

RAM: from what i have read in tpu reviews so far g.skill probably the best cost/performance choice you can make, with more accent on performance. for same price you can chose between 1866 ripjaw and sniper series. i have putted sniper because of customer choice award in newegg. ddr3 1866 isnt fastest you can buy but for its price will give more then enough performance. i doubt man can make difference between 1866 and 2100 or 2400 in real life usage. here with 5$ or 10$ more you can get 2100 were price difference comes from timings.

CPU: i cant afford to change my cpu/platform every few mounts just to try or because my benchmarks doesnt look so good so i dont see reason to invest in intel with their socket changed with every new chip and would stick to amd. in long term as investment i think amd will be cheaper solution. i havnt made exact calculations so i might be wrong on this but comparing prices for intel mb/cpu with amd mb/cpu i doubt i am. so back on 6300. a lot of ppl here suggested 8320 but 6300 is 40$ less and we are on tight budget. + i have something in mind that i will explain later. only point here is that vishera is must!

VGA: 7850 it isnt the best but is cheapest solution. i saw here in forums a link to review for sapphire card that has problems with overheating VRMs because of bad design of the cooling but i cant remember if it was 7850 or 7950. those -30$ instant rebate makes me think it is 7850 which has problem. i have something in mind here which is related to cpu in mind so more a bit later.

PSU: a lot of ppl here swear in corsair so who am i to contradict on this. beside today i have read some tpu test of corsair PSUs and i think i am going to put my oath as well. 650W bronze unit will be enough to handle all case fans you need + 2x crossfire + everything else w/o a problems and would handle some OC too of course if you dont go too crazy in OC.
both 7850 and bronze PSU arent best parts but combo pack gives another -15$ which is better then -0$.

sub total 687.93
shipping +50
sub total 737.93
mail in rebate cards for total of -25$
total (last one i promise) 713$
13$ over your budget. money are yours so its up to you to decide if u can handle it or not.

later explanation of i have something in mind: i will start with a saying from those parts i live at "poor man is pure devil" and you will see it fits perfectly here.
in OP you said you will be able to upgrade GPU within six mounts which counted from now is about spetember. i guess budget will be limited again but there is some things you can do to expand it and to fix flaws in the build i have suggested.
you get TR+Bioshock for free with 7850. i will join ppl who already pointed that you can sell em and get some cash, save it so you can add it in addition to GPU upgrade money after 6 mounts. september is 2 mounts away from christmas sales so if u hold on a little bit more you probably will be able to get 7950 + fx8320 + decent mid tower with good quality and good number of fan slots for improved cooling, on sale. a lot of ppl expect amd to lunch HD8XXX about christmas and this probably will drop prices of the HD7XXX cards with about 10-20$. i personally think that this year we will see new CPUs from amd as well since i doubt they will leave intel to sell their haswell w/o any competition so drop in 8320 price could be expected as well.

CASE: why dont you consider to use your current case for new parts for at least till christmas. those 50$ will cost more during sales.

sorry for wall of text and for spelling
kind regards

No problem. check this build out:

Ok, so I have changed it and it also saves me a few bucks.

Here is the new build:

I have room till like $650 but that does have to include shipping if i could change anything.

Looks pretty good. If you can find a 1866 2x4G set that keeps you on budget I would do that. Otherwise it looks pretty good. I don't think I would personally go with a Biostar board but I've built 2 machines with Biostar boards that have worked fine out of the box so no complains about them. If I were going to build a skt AM3+ with a 6300 though, I think I would consider something like this for a motherboard, but for your purposes it's probably not necessary. I like the 990X being a nice little middle ground as far as chipset capability. It's too bad there aren't more boards with it.

I think I will stay with the Biostar one just because of budget purposes and try to get the 2x4gb 1866 memory :)

Edit: I could get this memory for around $60:
Corsair Vengeance Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1866 MHz

The Corsair 1866mhz RAM in your link is fine, but there is just one caveat......the heatsink height might become an issue if you go for a third party cooler for your CPU.

i doubt he will have problems with box cooler

but in case he wants to get 3rd party cooler after then he definitely will have a problem. vengeance is 54mm tall http://www.corsair.com/us/support/faq/
g.skill sniper and ripjaw can fit better (42 and 40 respectively) or be very careful with choice of the cooler. first check as many as possible reviews for the cooler. there is big chance vengeance to has been used in test so you can see if it fits with cooler or not.

PS or just check for low profile memory that wont have problems with any cooler. corsair has some of their models marked as low profile. from g.skill sniper and ripjaw are relativly low profile trident is with detachable top part of the heatisink but it is expencive. corsair has also model with detachable top sink. you have planty of possabilites you jsut have to compare prices.

As long as there isn't a fan on the side of the memory, you should be okay. I have a Thermaltake Frio that's very similar and memory is perfectly fine if I only have one fan installed. Otherwise with two fans you need either regular height or low profile memory to populate all the DIMM slots.

This isn't a great quality picture but I took it when I upgraded my rig from my Phenom II 940 to the i7 3820. Memory barely fit under the fan, not the cooler. So I suspect you would have a similar concern considering it doesn't appear to be much wider than the Frio (heat sink alone).
