I just got my friend Tomb Raider for his laptop, since its his birthday today. he is running an i7, GT540m, and like 6-8GB of memory. However he keeps having problems where his system shuts completely off when he is playing. Not just an unresponsive black screen. He is running NVidia's new beta drivers for the game. tried messing with some settings, that previously causes Tomb Raider to crash on Nvidia setups. I told him to run the Steam Verify game cache, but haven't heard of the results. Has anyone else had a game completely shut their system off?

I have never heard of it.

alright so he did say it was near scolding hot when it shut down, and I did read that laptops will kill themselves if they get to a certain temperature. We are currently looking at laptop coolers.

Make sure the laptop's cooling system is free of dust as well. Even the slightest amount of dust poses a threat to the borderline acceptable cooling systems in many notebooks. I'd suggest that your friend gets a compressed gas duster and sees how much crap comes out of the vents unless they already do that every few months.

Same thing happened to my laptop when I play Torchlight 2 and Dragon Age 2, GPU overheating and then system completely shuts off (GeForce G310M, around 87 C when it went off).

Laptop cooler doesn't fix my problem, but what I did to fix this issues was replacing the TIM on the GPU (and also CPU because the heatpipe on the cooler is connected) and cleaning the whole system cooling. Now my GPU temp never went over 65 C.

You might try that if laptop coolers doesn't fix your problems.

He won't take that laptop apart, he uses it for school too. hes kind of a pansy about stuff. But yeah ill have him clean the dust out too if there is any. Im sure there is. Changing the TIM would be preferable, but I don't think I could ever get him to do that, and im not even sure how to take apart his laptop either.

While this being a laptop would make me think heat or power I will say I've been seeing this behavior with newer nvidia drivers. I'd download bluescreenviewer to see if there's an unreported dump with a video driver related code.

That would only help if he was getting a blue-screen and the machine was rebooting, but the machine is completely shutting down, blue screens don't completely shut down the computer.

It's heat.

Taking the laptop apart and cleaning/applying a good thermal paste coating would be the best solution. A laptop cooler will help, but won't cool enough to completely help by itself. It needs adequate airflow and as said, no dust blocking it. He might also have to turn down some settings to stop stressing it as much.

It might not be the laptop's fault.

Well unless the user is blocking the ventilation path then it is indeed the laptop's fault.

That very well could be the case, indirectly or directly.

to be completely honest the best thing he can do is take a vacuum cleaner with a blower and blow out the vents
