Hi guys. Currently im running dual hd7950s in crossfire.

My mate has just got himself a gtx titan over his 7970.

I said "give the 7970 to me so i can check out trifire".

We tried it and all is well and he wants $250 for it.

So my question is..... To keep or not to keep?

I was playing crysis 3 with them and it was running like a dream but my 7950s do ok aswell.

Im currently running all 3 at 7950 speeds and voltages coz im only running a 800w psu atm. Max wattage ive seen so far at theses settings was roughly 550w. Cheers.

Keep your current setup. It's uncleear whether yo're running two 7950s or three 7950s, but either way it's signifcanlty faster than a single 7970 even with bad scaling. You'd be silly to get rid. For $250 I'd tell him to jog on!

Not worth it.

3x 7950 will perform virtually the same as 2x 7950 + 1x 7970


If you look at the charts above and compare 3x 7950 with 2x 7950 they perform almost the same. The scaling doesnt improve much going from 2x to 3x and the few instances where it does pull ahead by larger margins doesn't justify the $250 spend.

i say if you have the money to spend, why not? 7970 for 250 is a good deal and if ur not satisfied you could prolly sell it for a bit more than what you bought it for.

Thanks but i dont notice any micro stutter with my cards or the third one for that matter.

I say buy it and trifire. So, basicly you're clocking the 7970 to a 7950? I'd say buy it because 250 is cheap for a 7970. @Dent1 why would you post benchmarks of games nobody plays anymore? He already said that trifx was out performing his cf in crysis3? So, it sounds like he is playing crysis3, and he has his on comparison... I mean the guys already tested it and he likes it. So, why not buy it? I think what he is asking is it worth buying a used 7970 for 250? and I say yes

LOL he was umming and ahring about $250. I doubt ill get it lower. He paid like $500+ for it. Its a reference ASUS 7970

It's not about microstutter, crossfire right now renders frames that get dropped and won't be seen by the user.

Like having 7970 CFX and seeing single 7970 frames.

It's difficult to find a 7970 trifire review let alone on current games.

$250 seems like an expensive price for just a Crysis 3 performance boost, especially when his current CF setup seems fine.

Whilst I agree $250 is a good price for a 7970 in general, I think the scaling of trifire doesn't outweigh the scaling of crossfire to make it financially feasible. Look at the charts above you're not getting $250 worth of performance moving from 2x to 3x.

That used to happen to me on my old 4850 CF on BFBC 2. All other games it was fine though.

If gaming is the only reason, in my opinion, not worth it. You already have a Xfire setup. I don't want to sound like a pain in the butt, but unless you are making money out of that PC, not worth it. Spend it on a nice sound card for example. I see you are running on a onboard. Get yourself the new SoundCore from Creative, it will add some frames to the games (where supported form developers).

My headphones i use have 7.1 inbuilt so thats enough for me. When i really wana rock the boat i go use my htpc thats got a sound card and all the fruit. Thanks.

He is probably already getting over 60 FPS in Crysis 3 already, $250 for 70 FPS vs 60FPS would make no sense. Yeah newer games will benefit, but to be fair the 7950 CF would handle newer games just fine. His rig and his current GPU setup is already overkill.

I agree, money can be spent elsewhere like a soundcard or speaker system.

But as a sidenote today's soundcards don't really improve frame rates because CPU have become so powerful it makes virtually no difference. Infact some high end soundcards reduce the frame rate because of the extra stress created by features like Dolby Digital Live DTS connect and other DSPs which taxes the CPU (on a minor level)

For $250, I'd say why the heck not?! The HD7970 would act like a HD7950 when TriFired with 2x HD7950, it'd still be beastly for games that do scale with TriFire. I have 3x HD7970's and I don't notice much microstuttering, in fact, I was surprised such an issue was made of it. Perhaps I have been doing TriFire for a while, and the microstuttering issue was minimized.

You don't need it, so buy it and sell it if you want to take advantage of him.

I'd recommend he put it out on eBay or something similar, he could cover in some of the cost of his new Titan.
