Hammer is way safer than razor blade. You just haven't done it so you aren't confident. Buy a few celeron 420s if you are nervous. They are $5 each.

If you could find out what TIM and sealant they used you could probably redo it for RMA, but I wouldn't even bother if you're one of the people that sliced it up with a razor. Wonder if they analyze dead chips or just toss them in a bin.

I might just do that to try a delid. I have a p4 chip but I think that has solder.

I delidded a P4 531 (worthless since I have a few 630s) and it had an extremely thick metallic goop, almost solid in fact. I used a razor blade and it came apart somewhat easily, but I had to use the blade to scrape off the goop layer by layer, and the chip works completely fine even with some stress on the substrate due to the thickness of the blade I used (from one of those retractable utility/box cutting knives).

Just thwacked a 3770.

No problem. Hit it hard and the chip came off straight away.........but............was very careful to ensure block of wood was square on and the chip case could not move in the vice.......yes, it still works.......the chip not the vice, although the vice is ok as well. :D

i just got the safest guaranteed way to delid a CPU.

get a rotary tool, take an abrasive rubber mounted sand band bits, and grind away the edges of the IHS. since the edges are thinner, they will give way soon and you can simply take the top off.

after that, you can just bend the sides in any way you wish so that its bent lower than the chip.

just be careful to clean it well with alcohol and compressed air to get rid of metallic dust.
