Which would you rather have? Single 27" 1440p monitor, or 3x 1200p 24" monitors for 3 monitor gaming, and why?

Def the 27", more pixel density than the indiv. 24's plus don't need quite the GPU power to drive it I'd venture. Also I can't stand the bezels splitting the image on multi-display.

I voted 1440p.

No bezels - hate them.

Much better frame rate.

Higher res monitor.

Action games look better with the shallower height, more letterboxed format of a 16:9 display.

For general desktop use though, a single 1200p 16:10 monitor is better.

Also, for minimal lag in games, ditch IPS and go for a decent 120Hz TN monitor with LightBoost or other strobing backlight. You can totally eliminate motion blur with these! Note these monitors are all currently 1080p though.

I went with the 1440p. I've got a 4800x900 setup (3x 1600x900 screens) and while it is immersive, there are a number of caveats that make it annoying.

1) FOV: I still don't understand if my screens are supposed to be flat, or if the side monitors are supposed to be angled in somewhat. Some games seem to be setup for a flat image while others seem to significantly "blow up"/enlarge the images as they near the outside edges of the side monitors. Some games are just bewildering in how they handle Nvidia Surround.

2) Support: While there are plenty of new titles that support it, a significant portion of older titles don't. So you wind up with 2 unused screens. Some games like SC2 have limits to what aspect ratios you can use. Anything wider than 16:10 is disallowed. While programs like "Flawless Widescreen" do offer support for SC2, the method of adjusting the resolution as it is stored in RAM or "memory hack" isn't really guaranteed safe. In a game like SC2 where competition is taken very seriously and there are anti-cheat measures in place, I'd be worried about using something that's modifying memory as a long-term solution.

3) Heat: My array really brings the pain to my 2 GTX 480's, and I'm not sure the experience is really worth the heat generation. Where 2560x1440 yields 3.68 megapixels, 5760x1200 is 6.912 and that's without any sort of bezel correction, which realistically you'd want to use. That's a significant difference in the amount of work the GPU is going to have to do, and the triple screen resolution will just devour VRAM.

4) Monitor Orientation: Even just getting the monitors to sit right and level can be a challenge. The rounded bezels on some monitors can cause the monitors to not touch evenly, sometimes forcing space to be left between them (which is rather unsightly). Unless your desk is one surface, or you get a 3 monitor mount, it's going to be difficult to get them "just right".

With all that, there is something to be said for the productivity advantage of 3 monitors. I enjoy having a wide desktop with a variety of open programs.

The thing keeping me from taking the leap to a 1440p monitor is that they're price-gougingly expensive at the moment. The Auria 27" is probably the cheapest I'd want to go, and even its expensive. The Korean companies like Shimian and Crossover offer compelling products, but the sparse support of HDCP, scaling boards, and international returns steered me clear. I'm still trying to understand how devices like tablets and smartphones are coming out with screens with dramatically higher pixel densities than those offered by 1440p monitors and for a fraction of the cost. Why a 5" 1080p screen is considerably cheaper than a 27" 1440p screen is just perplexing. Obviously, there's differences in display technologies as the 1440p is IPS and the 1080p screen on a number of small devices is AMOLED, but it still confuses me. I'm hoping that eventually 4K displays will drive QHD displays down to a reasonable price.

Yeah, I can get Dell 27" 1440p monitors on a discount from where I work. Im pretty sure I can get one for like sub $400-500. I got the U2412M I already have for $260 shipped.

1440 for gaming, but as a programmer and for work, I would rather have more displays. I can see multiple monitors just being annoying for many games.

I have two Auria 27" 2560x1440 IPS monitors which I think are great. They are connected to different systems.

I also have three Asus 27" 1920x1080 monitors which I very much like as well. In this case the three Asus monitors are connected to the same system in a triple monitor setup.

I like both configurations very much and switch between them without issue or annoyance,....

I just started Playing with 3x monitors, and I got to say it's kickass! I just played a little of Tomb Raider and I'm getting 30 to 45 fps with an avg of 31fps with everything cranked up @ 5000x1200 with only one MSI PE GTX 680. I hope to pick up another GTX680 soon. :toast:

I wouldn't be happy with less than a smooth 60fps though, so I say yeah, get that second 680.

Yea, I want 60fps and I believe I can get close with some tweaking. I'm very impressed with this MSI PE GTX680 it looks just like a lighting and even has the lighting backplate on it.

In doubt go triple 1440p :D

Jokes aside (which is partially a joke) single big screen is much better than more smaller screens, atleast for me, I can't stand bezels.

There is another option.

3x 27" 1080p monitors.

You can get 3 reduced bezel 27" monitors for about the same as 1 super high res 27".
There also about the same price as 3x 24" 1200p monitors.

This is the route I personally have decided to take. You don't have the resolution overhead of the 3x1200p monitors. But you still have a hell of a lot more gaming space than the single 1440p 27". The model I'm building my setup around is the LG IPS277L.

Meh 1080p on a 27" is pushing it imho. Shouldn't go over 23.6 with that resolution.

If you really want eyefinity just go triple debezeled ASUS 144hz.

1440p monitor, or 3x 1200p 24" monitors for 3 monitor gaming, and why

How much desk space do you want to take up and do you want it to take? Do you want super wisescreen gaming or just more resolution?

I don't know. I just saw some videos of triple monitor gaming and it looked really cool. Different experience.

Bear in mind that with eyefinity the side monitors are just for immersion, you'll not be looking directly at them.

Anyway yes it's a completely different experience compared to a single big screen, you nailed it, different not better :toast:

Ill probably stick with my original plan of getting a Dell U2713HM. But not for a while. seems some people are having a little bit of an issue with recent ones having a lot of light bleed, consistently at the lower left corner. I had the same with my 24" U2412M, but I lowered the brightness a bit, and its been a while, and haven't noticed it anymore. Maybe the screen straightened out from heat since backlit bleed is caused by panel warp.

IIRC, the first reviews of that LG model you linked to were rather poor, especially for gaming. However, LG revised it and corrected its shortcomings,......

So as long as you don't get an earlier model you should be fine.

***edit***

First thing, the LG 29EA93 performs incredibly well in our testing. Contrast ratios are superb, color accuracy is very good after calibration, and the screen uniformity is far better than I expected it to be when I first heard about it. On the downside, the input lag is very slow for gaming, which will rule it out for many people, and the CMS system should have been left out entirely. LG also could have provided more adjustments to the preset modes, so I could adjust the grayscale controls on the Cinema picture mode to get the best overall combination. I also would like to see them include a 2-point or 10-point grayscale control if they are going to have the full CMS, as a single point is really lacking when it comes to AV work. In the end, it puts out a fantastic image with a PC and calibration equipment, and a good but not exceptional image with AV sources.

As the first review and the second is as follows:

Anyone that read my initial review knows I was disappointed with the performance of the LG 29EA93. I’m a big fan of the aspect ratio, but I wasn’t a fan of the performance numbers that I saw from it. Well, it seems that LG wasn’t a fan either and went back to fix it, returning with a display that puts out some of the best numbers that I have ever seen. There isn’t a single issue that I found that LG didn’t address in full and add into their QA workflow to prevent the same issues from happening again. It really feels like someone gave me a totally different monitor to review than before.

While I think LG probably would prefer that every product they put out be perfect, to me this was actually a good thing to have happen. I’ve reviewed many things that I’ve given poor reviews in my life, and this is the first time I’ve had a response like this. LG wasn’t content to have a bad review out there, or to have flaws in their product, and worked hard to address those issues. Seeing that commitment from a company said a bit more to me than seeing a company put out a good monitor does.

If I were reviewing the LG 29EA93 from scratch, I’d say it’s a fantastic monitor. It has incredible uniformity, the highest contrast ratio I’ve seen in a long, long time, and after calibration it’s almost totally flawless on all our tests. The CMS for video works fantastic, and watching 2.35:1 movies on it is a really nice visual treat. The lag response is very low and for gaming it will work well and offer a very nice field-of-view in games. It really is an incredibly well made, and unique, monitor in the marketplace today.

That's what I thought as well.

I scrapped my old Media Center setup and redesigned it by wall mounting my HDTV and getting rid of unneeded stuff (TV stand, VCR, DVD player and so on). This left me with some space but no desk. I took two half hight file cabinets , some extra wood I had and some laminated wood floor panels to make a nice little desk. It looks really good too if I say so myself,...

Then I slapped three 27" monitors on it and I was good to go. There isn't enough room to put them straight side by side but angling the end monitors inwards slightly makes it work.
