Hey,

I am looking to build a home server, and I am just wondering how the CPU would handle the load I will be putting on it. It would be running a Plex Server, transcoding video files 720p and 1080p. Minecraft server running Tekkit, ownCloud backup, and possible torrents.

CPU: Intel Core i3-3220
MEM: 8GB DDR3 1600

How many people on the Minecraft server? Are you wanting to transcode in real time, or just convert videos to different formats so you can watch them easier later?

Most of those tasks should be fine, but the transcoding and Minecraft might not. Tekkit can get pretty CPU intensive with some of the things it can do, and since Minecraft is single threaded it will eat a weaker CPU like that i3 pretty quickly.

Transcoding in real time might not be possible with that CPU either, but if you just want to convert videos to watch later then it shouldn't be a problem.

Honestly, for the price range of that CPU, I'd look at an AMD FX-6300(or 6350). The FX-6300 is cheaper than the i3-3220, the FX-6300 has 6 Physical cores which will help balance the load, and the FX-6300 can be overclocked to the point that it is better than the 3220 even in single threaded load.

I would look for a used 2600K and Z68 if you plan on doing all of theses at the same time.

this raises an interesting question...if a minecraft server is virtualized then will assigning more processors to the virtual machine improve performance?

i5-3470 would be as low as I'd go.

Not beyond a certain point. Obviously you want one core to process all the background tasks of the OS and another core for Minecraft, but adding more than that doesn't really improve performance.

6300 would be a great choice. Honestly for that style load an 8150 wouldn't be to bad especially if you got into real time transcoding not to mention they are dirt cheap now.

I agree, I was just suggesting the 6300 because it was in the same price range as the i3. Actually right now the 8320 is $20 cheaper than the 8150 on newegg(yeah I know, it used to be a good $40 more), so I'd recommend that if the OP has about $160 to spend. For $160 there isn't really much that can beat an 8320.
