They are the same, 365 has less money making schemes, but dumps everything on the cloud.
365 is online, 2013 is 100% offline.
Also 365 will cost more in the longrun, especially if you dont upgrade for 3 years.

Office 365 is the rental version of Office. It means you must keep paying each month to use it. You also get various benefits such as always the latest version, cloud storage and more. The Microsoft website will tell you about it.

With Office 2013, you stay with the same version until you pay for a new one.

Personally, I would never go with the rental model as you'll end up spending a fortune on it. It's up to you though weigh up the benefits of both and see which suits you best.

The rental model is also known as Software as a Service (SaaS).

in terms of the actual applications between 2013 and 365? They're identical.

Here's Microsoft's official Office page which should help you decide what to get. Or confuse you totally! :)

this is not true.Office 365 is not 100% online. You have plan that can have also the offline version, like the home premium.

Well, this wasn't clear maybe for everyone ;)

anyway, Office 365 is for me more attractive if you have more than one computer at home. Home Premium can be installed on 5 computers, You can log into web app on other computer if someone doesn't have it and you need to make some work.

You pay more than office home and student after a little bit more than a year (has it is 99$ vs 129-139$), but it can associated on 5 computers. If files aren't for work, you can use the cloud everywhere.

As per a tablet, it is quite nice, I think, to have the document on the cloud also.

Not really. Office 365 Home Premium is the equivalent to Office Professional. Office Professional is $390 and you can only install it on one PC. Office 365 is $99.99 a year and you can install it on up to 5 PCs. So even if you have just one PC, it would take almost 4 years for 365 to match the cost of the stand alone version. And if you have 2 PCs the cost for the stand alone version soars to $780, thats almost 8 years of paying for 365...

It's swings and roundabouts, isn't it? It works out that way at today's figures and that's the way MS want you to see it, but things don't stay the same. If anything, I expect Office 365 to get more expensive as the product gets more popular and entrenched, allowing MS to extract more money from people and squeeze out the competition. I expect MS to remove the non-saas version completely within a year or so too and do an Adobe.

Also, I really don't like the idea of having to keep paying a company in order to use their product. Adobe have done this with all their apps now and people aren't too happy at having to keep paying them to continue having access.

No, this is a fundamentally different business model and the software companies wouldn't have moved to it had they not seen a way to make more money with it than the current model. In other words, it's gonna cost you more.

Imagine if all the major software on your PC had a monthly fee attached to use it? Starts getting pricey and you'll quite rightly feel that you don't own your PC which you paid good money for.

In the end, rental in any market, whether it be houses, cars, computer software or whatever sucks for the customer and makes for a nice little earner for the vendor.

Sure, you can say that you think Microsoft will raise the price over time, but Microsoft isn't exactly one to raise prices. Their software prices have been pretty darn steady for about a decade.

Even if their prices don't go up (which I think will) the whole concept of the rental model is there to make it more expensive for the customer or they wouldn't do it. It also means that you've gotta keep paying the piper to use it, or it goes into read only mode or disables completely, depending on the vendors current policies. You can't argue with these two points.

Neither of these is in the customer's favour.

Actually, I can very effectively argue that the rental system is not to make it more expensive for the customer. I've already shown you that for 365 to be more expensive you'd have to keep the same version of Office for 4 years, 8 years if you use it on 2 computers at the same time. That isn't a system that is more expensive for the customer, not in today's world filled with households with multiple computers. The rental system is there for DRM, that is why they do it.

For DRM? Sounds very likely and I'll agree with you on that one, but not the other points.

I see that you haven't been able to counter that one has to keep paying the piper, either. ;)

Office 365 is just leasing software. It's incredibly cost effective, and hands down the better value if you want to always have the latest and most up to date versions of the office suite programs.

If you just want to just slap a version of office on your computer and use that one for years to come, then yes, the offline version would be cheaper.

Let's face it. If you want the absolutely lowest cost for a suite then download an open source alternative.

Why would I have to counter that point? The alternative is paying a huge amount up front, 6 of one half dozen of the other. In the end you're still paying. Logically, that point counters itself.

Simple as this from a consumer pov you don't have to stump up a big up front fee yet still get all the benefits of having a fully featured version with some added capabilities, for the vendor it's a monthly cash cow that will provide a steady revenue stream as opposed to one off sales which aren't as predictable to forecast. Either way you get the same functionality give or take a few pluses and minus for each product and both of these factors should let you decide which option is better for you, if you have the cash and don't need the cloud storage and backup features of 365 then get 2013, if you'd rather not stump up $300 in one go but can manage $20 a month for 365 then go with that.

I agree, whatever way you go, you're paying out the ass to use Office.

That's not what I meant and you know it you cheeky bugger.

Anyway, yeah it's expensive either way. Nice way to put it. I approve. :D

If you don't have to HAVE Office, I recommend trying Libre Office, it is based out of France and free, I have been using it over a year and find it to be better than Microsoft Office, however, some people have to have Microsoft office because of business reasons, so I can understand that.

I've been using Libre Office since it was still called Openoffice. And you are right, for most people it is more than capable of replacing Office. Though it isn't perfect, thats for sure. For example, it totally sucks at printing Labels and Envelopes compared to Office. The built in envelope and label wizard in Office works so much better. But for basic tasks like Excel spread sheets and work docs, Libra/OpenOffice works perfectly.
