Computer turns off 20-25 mins later?

It's my first computer build, been bugging for 3 weeks now. Took things out, put things back in, vice versa but it still happens. I turn on my computer, it turns on normally, everything is working fine then 20-25 minutes later the computer turns off by itself. Luckily I managed to create a system image, and installed all the drivers before it crashed. Also, after it turns off, it doesn't turn on again.

Here's a more detailed description: The powersw (switch) case connector is put in the correct spot, but when I click the power button from the outside, nothing boots. Sometimes it does boot, other times it doesn't. Also, I use the screwdriver method and I discovered there are two places where the motherboard can boot from. One being the correct spot that it suppose to boot from, the other one is located beside the the case audio connector (I'll give you a visual). From these two spots, one of them will work at times when the other won't. I go back and forth shorting the pins of the two places, which I know is wrong. On the other hand, I did manage to find a faulty RAM stick and I removed it but the problem still occurs. In short, the power button sometimes works other times it doesn't - thus, I open the case and go back and forth.

The power supply I got came with the case I purchased, and it was then I realized cases with power supplies are pretty bad. So I bought a new power supply and the same problem occurs. Now I'm stuck on this. My guess is that the problem maybe be the motherboard, but I'm here to listen to more possibilities. Thanks for reading!

Honestly sounds like a powersupply issue which I went through a year or more ago where my HX850 was crapping out and had the same issues but since you replaced the PSU I would rule that out.

That leaves me thinking its a short with the motherboard and case.

Try pulling the mobo from the case and set it on a cardboard box away from anything conductive hook everything up see if it boots and runs properly if it does you have a short if it doesnt then further troubleshooting is required.

Would it be possible to assemble the basics outside the case? like use your box the motherboard came in or something with a safe surface to rule out shorts/case issues. Also try turning off all energy savings in the BIOS as well to narrow down if it is possibly dropping disks from the southbridge after a while. Could also see if it stays on while in the BIOS screen for an extended period of time. Hope it helps.

A short would've made everything shut down immediately, not after some time.
I would've said it was the PSU's fault, but you already bought a new one and the problem remains unchanged.

It seems like a heat issue, though it's probably not the CPU itself. I think you may have gotten a motherboard whose CPU VRM is on it's way out. Probably one of the power FETs has entered the "thermal runaway" stage and is about to go soon. It happens, especially on cheaper boards. There is another possibility that the LAN or the audio chip are on their way out, but that's very rare. In most cases when one of the integrated peripherals goes, the board either refuses to fire up at all, or spins the fans, but doesn't boot.

After your PC shuts down, carefully touch the CPU VRM and see if anything is suspiciously hot (so much so that you can't touch it for more than a second without burning yourself). Of course, before touching anything first unplug your PSU from the wall outlet, and press and hold the power button on your case to drain the capacitors.

Is it always 20-25 minutes of run time or will it shutdown sometimes after a few minutes and other times longer than the 20-25?

That's still consistent with gradual overheating, especially if the system remains powered up longer if it's under light/no load and/or if it stayed off for longer periods of time (i.e. had time to cool off and discharge everything).

Don't some BIOS settings allow the user to change at what temp the system will shut down? I ask because couldn't he lower the point that it shuts down by a few degrees to see if it ends up happening any sooner? In both cases run/open the same programs each time to lessen the amount of variables. Just make sure that you don't lower them too far as it would then shut down anyway. Or raise them and the same goes for not raising them too high. This of course is like I said, if you can edit them in the BIOS.

Or yes, as stated above run Core Temp.

Thanks for dissing this info so quickly, establishing a baseline to start from is poor advise?; as mentioned in the OP the PC has had parts taken out and put back over the course of three weeks.

nb: checking temps this way rules out any ssd/hdd hard/software and or OS/Software related issues

first im gonna check the heat of processor the chipset and i run it minimal. like with 1 ram 1hdd like that
reset your bios too, or change that into default
then check your psu. maybe your psu is in trouble

Core Temp Results

I ran Core Temp, and I attached a image of my results.
Please look at it, also I managed to take everything out and out everything back (Reseated RAM, Reset Bios, etc) and the problem still occurs. Yes, this problem does occur only about 20-25 minutes at max, nothing more. Thanks for all the help so far guys!

It wasn't a question of CPU temperature as much as it is a question of the CPU VRM (Voltage Regulation Module) on the motherboard. You can't read it's temperature out, so you'll have to check it manually, as I stated several posts above.

Sorry for not doing that McSteel, I didn't even ntoice that post of yours. I'll do that and come back and share the news. Also, I always have to go back in the case and jump start it with a screwdriver, and at times that doesn't work. I just take out the power button connector and connect it again to the motherboard, and either way it turns on those two ways after shutting down after 20-25 minutes.

I've tried also tried to boot the mobo with just one ram stick and cpu outside of the case, but it doesn't boot. Thought those who said to try to boot the mobo outside the case would want to know. Awesome Advice so far!

The CPU VRM isn't hot at all, I touched for a split second but it wasn't hot at all. I'm thinking that maybe the motherboard is short, it took me a dozen attempts just go get the system to boot. Also, my results from Core Temp also do not show any signs of overheating. Any other thoughts? Should I buy a new mobo? And any recommendations on which one? Thanks!

last attempt, have you tried to put it off from the case and test again. if it still act the same you could consider new board.
if you are looking for a board what type that you need, like oc board, support sli/crossfire, many sata port, or something like that and how much your budget?

Before RMA-ing the mobo I would try, if I was you, to update the bios. It's a long shot but maybe it could be a BIOS glitch, reading the temperatures badly. Also try to reinstal another OS, Linux distro or mini xp from hirens boot and see if it turns off then. While youre at it check ram and hdd for bad sectors.

I know I'm a pain in the *** but do it. Maybe it's a gremlin problem (a pain in the ***) that you just didnt notice in time and the scenario will re-enact even if u change parts.

Remove the little heatsink down the motherboard beside the PCI slots and heat the chip with a heat gun for 20 minutes and low air flow, and if not working try to have a new motherboard

Sorry for the long reply, but I was doing the suggestions you guys gave (by the way, I can't get my hands on a heat gun since I'm 15) And to answer your question micro, I'm looking for a motherboard similar to the one I bought (just not that inefficient and cheap) I need a LGA1155 socket, along with 4 Sata Connectors, 2 ram slots, and two (one is all right) video card slot as well. I don't need any crossfire support/OC just yet, this is just a budget gaming/daily-tasks computer. Nothing that big. My budget will be below $130 (CAD)
