Is black the only one with a 5 year warranty? This confused me as I was looking at the Red drives

yes. they give 2 year on all, and only the black ones come with 5year warranty.

even WD says that for purely storage and RAID, to use RED drives.

I though so. it just doesn't make sense to me. You would think the red drive for storage would have a longer warranty not a performance drive. I guess that explains the premium price on black drives

I was wondering, I know that WD reds are optimised for NAS use but what if i put it into a USB3.0 Enclosure? I know that greens are probably more suited for that.

WD generally use greens in enclosures themselves, so I guess you'd be safe with a green. They do fine for streaming audio/video. I've switched to Seagate about a year and a half ago because (at least here), 3TB 7200rpm Barracudas are cheaper than the greens.

Do note I did have one of these Seagates drop from 100% to 25% in less than 3 months which I had to replace. I've got 6 year old greens that are running just fine and have been running 24/7 since October 2011 and at least 4 hours a day for the other 4 years.

How do your green operating temperatures compare to blue/black/red? Are they cooler due to energy efficient design?

That's actually something I overlooked, apologies for not mentioning it. During the Summer my bedroom is usually between 30 - 40 degrees Celsius during the day. Bearing this in mind, the my blacks (both scorpio and caviar) will idle over 40 and the greens are usually hovering around 3-4 degrees less. Under usage I've observed this to be around 6-8 degrees in difference between both kinds of drives. Let us bear in mind that the scorpios run slightly cooler than the caviar but just by a couple degrees every now and then.

What baffles me is that under heavy usage, my Seagates are still cooler than a WD would be on idle. My Seagates are abused daily for media streaming around the house so they go through a lot. Not to mention read speeds of over 190mb/s averaging over 155mb/s. I might seem like I've become a bit of a Seagate fanboy but I'm so impressed with these drives I just can't describe it.

Well I only want a drive for external use so I guess im fine with greens, as for warranty, the place Im planning to purchase from also sells WD care plans which arent too bad so I might do that too.

I just need a few hard drives so i can start sorting out and organising all the existing trash on my current ones.

Well, for drives that will be stored and not used I'd probably just go for the cheapest I could get my hands on and check it for errors every now and then just to be safe.

Just remember the external enclosures will get really hot, I killed my last one due to heat, now I just plug in an internal drive when I want to use it instead.

I'll be using a HornetTek Enterprise 4X JBOD which has active cooling so i should be fine. WD Greens power down when they arent in use so at least 2-3 of them will be powered down at any given time once the whole setup is up and rolling.

Any drive should be able to power down, you should be safe in that aspect.
