Is the price difference worth it? Also do older cards get driver support?

Hello,
I am going to buy my first custom PC parts next week.
My decided specs:

CPU------------------FX 6300
MOBO----------------Asus m5a97 EVO r2.0
RAM------------------G.Skill RipJawsX 8gb
CASE-----------------HAF 912 with window
HDD------------------WD 1tb Blue
PSU------------------Seasonic S12ii 620W
MONITOR-------------Dell S2240L [21.5'' 1080p] - [I already have viewsonic 1440*900p monitor]
The above totals to about ~ 670$ in my country [india]

Now i am confused for which graphic card to go.

I want a card which is compatible with DX11.2 Tiled Resource feature [As i'll have the windows 8.1] and also support DUAL-MONITOR [Gaming will only be done on 1080p screen]
I want the card to serve me for atleast 2.5 years with a gradual decrease in game settings from ULTRA [2013] to HIGH [2014] to MID-HIGH [2015] to MID-LOW[2016]

Asus GTX 760 - 325$ [If i buy this one i wont have money to upgrade gpu for 2.5 years]
Sapphire 7870 GhZ - 250$ [If i buy this card i might upgrade the gpu after 1.7-2 years]
7870 XT - not available

Sorry for typing so much. But any help suggestion comments views opinions will be HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

Thanks you in advance ;)

TL;DR: Is the 760 worth the extra 75$ over the 7870?
Also the 75$ saved today will help me in upgrading the GPU faster!

As a gamer you should always get the best video card you can afford at the time you decide to upgrade. To settle for a slower card now in the hopes of doing the next upgrade sooner doesn't make sense. You will regret the money you saved as soon as you experience slow-downs or artifacts, and as you noted, as games get more demanding any card will feel slower.
Last time I upgraded, I had a 550 Ti, and could really only afford a 660, but I stretched my budget and got a 660 Ti, which is much faster for a little more $.
I recommend the 760 or if you can manage it, the 770 is very powerful and will last for 3 or more years and still run all games.

Currently there are only a few cards out there that support DX11.2, A few AMD APUs and 7000 series cards does but AMD have yet to release a driver that 'turns on' DX11.2 functionality. And even if it does support DX11.2 Microsoft still needs to convince developers to use it and with the stigma that Windows 8 left, I doubt that many people are gonna be willing to leave windows 7 for windows 8.

If DX11.2 is really that revolutionary, it should have no problem selling itself and having developers use it. as it currently stands there are more Win 7 users then Win 8 so microsoft can pretty much take their time fixing up Windows 8.

For all you know DX11.2 could turn out like DX10.1 - Nobody cared.

If youre talking about DX11.2 from a gaming perspective, there wont be a DX11.2 game out for at least another 2-5 years

It's actually $85 not $75 difference :D Of course everyone is going to tell you the 760 is quicker.... because it is, if you want to look at it purely in terms of value versus performance then the math is fairly simple, at 1080p the 760 is 18% faster across the board (as per TPU review) than the 7870, however the $85 difference is more than than 18% so in essence you are paying an inproportionate amount for the performance boost you will be getting....... having said that though, I would still go for the 760, it will just give you more of what you need for longer, both will continue to get driver support for the 2.5 years you are estimating, not sure on the DX11.2 FULL compatibility but I would guess the 760 is most likely to give you what you need.

Edit: I see what you did there ;)

As such i have no maximum budget. I could even go for the titan. But i wont be using that much of GPU-POWER... I am not a very graphic enthusiast , also i am a student so i'll be using my dad's money and i don't want to waste his money.

Thanks for pointing out the mistake and thanks for the reply. It's actually still 75$. [The 760 is 325$ not 335$ :p]

I am still confused and reluctant to spend the extra 75$. Need someone to convince me that it's worth it.. because on many reviews the 760 only performs 5-10fps more than the 7870. And the 7870 OC is on par with the 760]

-------------------------------
Let's say 7870 = 100% = 250$
Performance/Dollar = 0.4

760 = 108-118% = 325$ [Accounting in many different reviews]
Performance/Dollar = 0.33 - 0.36 ~ 0.345

not going to happen as you are looking at low level gaming cards today which cant max stuff out already.

that is unless you play on a low res screen, in which case intel hd4000 would do what you need :)

If you need someone to convince you then get the 7870, in a couple of years time when you decide you want to play Battlefield 5 on anything higher than low settings, you will be grateful for that 10fps :D The simple answer is, if you can afford the 760 then get it, it's better, if you can't then go for the 7870 but it's pointless to compare an overclocked 7870 with a stock 760, if you would overclock the 7870 then you would overclock the 760....... the gap would remain.

You can get a rough idea of performance per dollar comparison by referring to TPU's reviews of the more recent card released.

When the reference 760 first debuted, TPU's chart showed it having 5% better performance per dollar than the price/performance ratio of the 7870, based on prices at the time.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_760/29.html

Non reference versions might cost a bit more, but they also perform a bit better, so the same would apply with them.

The best deal you can get is often a rebate on one of the recently released non ref cards (eg 760), or better yet, a Newegg email subscriber promo.

The 760 is easily the best bang for buck in all of Nvidia's current lineup, and even the best bang for buck in it's price range overall.

As far as DX version, anything made for some time is going to support Dx11, and that's all you should be concerned about really.

There are some things it's good to have the latest and greatest of, but Dx versions aren't necessarily one of them, with the exception being when Dx11 debuted, since it was quite a change.

It took some time before games supported Dx11 well though, and most still don't.

I am using Intel HD4000 on my laptop currently and i cant even play CS:GO or Dota2 [Source engine] on lowest settings with 50+ fps.. [CS:GO ranges from 18-27fps]

Thanks for the information. THE TPU review of performance/dollar is given according to US prices..

According to my calculations

Let's say 7870 = 100% performance = 250$
Therefore Performance/Dollar = 0.4

760 = +8 to +18% over 7870 from many different reviews = 108-118% performance = 325$
Therefore performance/dollar = 0.33 - 0.36 =~ 0.345

Waiting for a few more suggestion as I still have a few days left before I go shopping :)

And even if it does support DX11.2 Microsoft still needs to convince developers to use it and with the stigma that Windows 8 left, I doubt that many people are gonna be willing to leave windows 7 for windows 8.
The tiles aren't going away. 11.2 will eventually get supported.

I would highly recommend going nVidia at this time. GTX760 is a solid card - my GTX670 makes me very happy, and they perform very similarly.

Always get the best card you can afford imho.

8K posts too :toast:

I can afford the 7970 as well but with the current price in india it's performance/money is very bad.. 7970 in US < 760 in india < 7950 in india

I would highly recommend going nVidia at this time. GTX760 is a solid card - my GTX670 makes me very happy, and they perform very similarly.

I noticed you have a ''7930'' in your secondary CPU. I am guessing it's the 7870XT?
Can you tell me how good is the 760 over the 7870XT? [If i got the7870XT for 60$ less than 760 would it be worth it - because the 7870XT will be available after 2weeks]

Im running two 7870 XT (7930's) and mine just beat two 670's slightly OC i think (In the Graphics Score) . Far as I know the 670 and the 760 are very close in performance?

Take a look at the link > http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=135908&page=68 And scroll down to you see mine and then the next post with the 670's in SLi and you can see for yourself :)

I think the 7930 vs the 760 are a lot closer then people think and a lot cheaper if you can find them anymore.

760 is faster alright but how are the prices for 7950's in your country ? although i'd wait a couple more days to see if amd brings something better for the money in that price range.

so does my Asus GTX 670 4gb, and it actually got more Cuda Cores then the GTX 760, but the 700series got gpu boost 2.0.

but i am happy with my card so far, so i am not gonna change it, i think. i was looking at a GTX 760 but then yet again it won't be a upgrade i would notice i think.

so why not look for a cheap GTX 670, many stores have some good bargains out from time to time, bcs the 700 series is here...

u can actually right now get a Zotac GTX 670 4gb based on the GTX 680 pcb, for 325 usd awesome deal right there: ZOTAC ZT-60303-10P GeForce GTX 670 4GB 256-bit GDD...

and u get a free copy of Batman: Arkham Origins ;)

Wow that is impressive. Over here the 7950 was still over $300 just but the 7870 XT and the normal 7870 was the same price so it was a no brainer

Thats because you're in the EU. In India they dont have that much choice given what's available to them and they most likely don't have a very big enthusiast market over there, It wouldn't surprise me at all if the retailers or shop merchants decided to keep their prices inflated because of problems with distribution.

There are more retailers in the EU who can order more stock and have a lot more choice then a retailer in India so they can always run discounted offers and still make a profit.

Exactly. The enthusiast people in india are very low. It's because income of people here is less , expense is more and PC parts are even more expensive!

There's a huge UPDATE TO THE THREAD!
Today i went to around 10 shops to search for the given parts. Look's like the "EVO" version of Asus m5a97 is disconituned in the indian market and is no longer available.
So now i might have to go for m5a99fx pro which sets my budget back by quite a bit :(
Also 760 price increased to 360$ :(
7870 price increased to 270$

WHAT TO DO? I already need to spend 80$ extra for the motherboard and now graphic card prices also increased?
