Lynnfield i5 750 worthy upgrade to.. ? for gaming

It's been a while since I last checked, and since there's also plenty of new CPUs out..

I currently have a core i5 750 oc'ed at 3.6ghz with p55 evga sli (can probably push to 3.7 or 3.8 with little more tweaking)
running with amd hd7950 oc'ed also but can't remember clocks
8gb ram and seasonic 760 watt psu

while playing bf3 yesterday, I noticed that 4 cores of i5 are about 90-95% while the gpu was running at 95 - 100% all maxxed setting except msaa only at 2x

Is there a worthy cpu upgrade or should I wait?
Mainly looking to get same performance with BF4 when it comes out.
I plan to oc as well for the best bang for the buck if there's a worth upgrade choice.

The only cpu worth upgrading to, considering you're using the dead 1156 socket, would be a i7 8x0 series cpu. And only if you could find one on the cheap, let's say under 150$.

You could consider upgrading to the 1155 socket, as 200-250$ can buy you a quite potent cpu/motherboard combo. From the 2c/4t series and up, any intel cpu (and i'd guess any amd 6 cores and up cpu, not sure here as i'm not that familiar with their cpus) will not really bottleneck your gpu, qand you could keep the rest of your computer intact: same ram, hdd, etc, even the cooler will fit, as both 1155/1156 use the same retention system. You'll have to give up any ocing though, as the starting point for any k-cpu (unlocked) would be the same 250$!

Or just keep looking for a 860/870, as finding one for less than 130$ would be a pretty good deal and let you enjoy your rig for maybe a few years: a 4c/8t cpu running at 3,8 ghz is nothing to scuff at! You'd be buying around 85% of the 4770k performance for a third of the price any 4770K/good quality (like your current one) motherboard deal. This statement doesn't take account of the power used delivering the said performance.

Even going to a 4670k would be a good boost, as the memory bandwidth and IPC improvements are pretty significant coming from first gen core series.

i was looking for something like that until i found a pack with 2 mobo (Asus P6T SE and Rampage III Extreme) +12gb 1600 and a i7-920 for 100$ (i should resell the P6T )

but i agree a i7-8x0 should be the only worthy upgrade on the OP setup if found under 90$, 150 $ is a lil' bit too high for saying "cheap" well most of those who sell 2nd hand intel stuff think they have the 8th wonder (i love that expression ...)and exploit the "Omigosh its intel so the price should be worth" ... luckly the OP seems not to be the simpleton buyer who will bite the direct buy price at 250$+ like i saw once on a i7-860

now i could get a I7-3820 for 120$ (i just saw one) and get a Sabertooth x79 i saw at 80$ to upgrade my i7-920... or do a 5th rigs ...

Yes if you don't want the hassle and expense of a whole new platform an i7 870 or 875K that can do 4Ghz+ would be far from night and day difference but def is an upgrade. You get HT as well as a 2:12 ram divider allowing higher mem speeds though such may have relatively negligible effects on 3D gaming.

Only around $100 though (not $150 except for a golden) and I happen to have one now available that I put a Xeon in that rig--same board! (oops plug! )

You may also want to consider a second 7950 seeing as how they are $200 now.

Only worthy upgrade? That's more or less a side grade. Just going to a an i7 of the same generation won't do much for him.

Haswell is really what he should go to. Especially if he lives near a Microcenter he can get a 4670k and a MSI z87 GD 65 gaming board for pretty good price.

Better IPC, power consumption, temps (maybe), memory bandwidth (which is what he will benefit most from) etc.

I felt really dissappointed when socket 1156 died really early and felt ripped off by intel. But a second thought, I never felt the need to upgrade for 3 yrs since. So I have mixed feeling with the new intel socket. But AMD has been carrying AM3+ socket for so long now, they might just kill it anytime also..

It is somewhat weird upgrading to the same generation chip unless there really is a big performance differencs from an i5 750 to i7 870.

No. Go 4670k. Gaming doesn't benefit too much from HT.

How much do you have on hand of either money or will to upgrade? And do you own a ssd?

chugging along a 60gb ocz ssd + 320gb 5400 hard drive
I was planning to upgrade with no greater than $300 (not even sure if that's possible), but $100/yr of use out of CPU & MB sounds reasonable.
Plan to keep the upgraded rig for atleast another 3 years and just replace failing parts.

Just go faster ram or a ssd or a gpu and keep your i5 until the haswell replacement comes out. The performance difference to go haswell isn't worth $300.

Remember there's many if playing here... No one have the perfect answer, we can merely suggest our opinion.

And we cannot tell what 300$ will buy next year. I don't see any emergency in the way he approaches refreshing his platform.
