Ok, going 780 Ti might sound like a no-brainer, but hear me out.

I want the best framerate to keep my games sitting at 120Hz vsync-locked as much as possible at 1080, with no dropped frames and the video quality maxed it out or nearly so.

Checking out the GTX 780 Ti review shows that the 690 is still a fair bit faster in most games, as you can see in the graph below. See how the 780 Ti is averaging 128fps, not really that much over 120, while the 690 is comfortably above it at 155fps? Ok, while the 780 Ti is sometimes faster and neither card can always go above 120fps in every scenario, the 690 still seems faster on average and will therefore hold that 120fps more often.

The price: I can get a B-grade GTX 690 from Overclockers for £500, while the 780 Ti is £560 (which will drop a bit soon, hopefully). The 690 is discontinued, so I don't have a lot of time to decide, should I get it. Note that I've bought several B-grade graphics cards from Overclockers and never had a problem with them, so feel confident that I won't have a problem now.

I'm not bothered by the 2GB usable RAM on the 690 which would be a hindrance for 4K capability. I will continue using 1080 for the foreseable future, since by the time 4K is established and affordable, any graphics card sold today will be obsolete or nearly so. I'd likely upgrade my 2700K CPU, mobo and memory at that time as well.

I'm not bothered by the use of SLI on the 690 since it's always worked very well for me, with excellent performance and very few microstutter problems and am using it now.

Note that if I get either card, I'll sell my two MSI 3GB GTX 580 Twin Frozr II cards so the overall upgrade cost won't be so huge.

Finally, I'm not interested in going AMD, even though the HD 7990 is the fastest card overall and quite cheap now at £440.

I went from my 660 Ti SLI to a 780 and the differences are similar to what you're looking at. It really is up to personal preference. I like having less heat dumped in the case and there is certainly a few less driver and compatibility issues, but performance is def. down more often than not, though I also have smoother gameplay in some instances. I think being able to run my rig quieter and cooler is what finally sold it for the 780 for me.

Its simple 780 Ti + Overclock = close enough to GTX 690 performance to make the difference moot, You get the option of SLI with it later and even if you don't resale of a single gpu card is much easier than dual gpu cards with less chance of issues.

Ok, I'm not especially keen on overclocking my graphics cards, because those GPUs run hot and stressed enough at stock IMO, but I get your point, especially about reselling them. Also, Kepler and that cooler are so good, that I might just dare to overclock it!

It looks like the 780 Ti is winning comfortably already, lol.

Wait for aftermarket designs such as Zotac's AMPed / EVGA with ACX or w.e cooler / MSI gaming series / ASUS Direct Cu II etc etc.

As for temps etc 83c doesnt seem that bad at 40 dBA on such a mammoth GPU. I am lucky I guess with a case with some sound dampening materials my systems dBA levels are about 3-5 lower than say a solid traditional case and 4-7 dBA lower than something like the HAF series which is all mesh.

I mean lets face it at this point you have about 20-25 days until non reference 780Ti are released since they are ment to target the 290x non reference cards.

780ti, no brainer.

1GB more VRAM, no SLI, chip revision overclocks to the moon on stock voltage.

My personal experience has been good with SLI but you could never know, also performance is so damn close you'd be hard pressed to justify a GTX 690 purchase right now.

Reference isn't noisy until 60% fan (personal experience).

Also temp doesn't increase that much if you don't touch voltage, frequency alone isn't going to make your GPU jump in temperature, just 2-3C.

GTX780Ti. As Radrok said, and no dual GPU performance issues in games that might not support SLI well. Not to mention the cost of the 690 compared to what is offered with the 780Ti at its price is considerable.

I really want that tasty stock cooler, even if aftermarket ones perform better, so I'm gonna stick to reference.

However, I've just looked over the overclocking section of the review and see what you mean. Almost 30% overclock at stock voltage and no extra heat? Damn!! Can you imagine what this thing is like on LN2?

Ok everyone, you've sold me on the 780 Ti.

Thanks for all the advice, you guys rock. :rockout:

Once Classified/Lightning version of this GPU roll out I'll pick up one, I wouldn't be surprised to see 1550/1600 Mhz on water considering I can run 1450-1500 Mhz on 2688 GPUs on water.

What is really holding me is Titan stock PWM which to be honest I'm not too excited about running it over 1.35v :|

Between the two 780 ti any day, though I'd wait for a non reference cooler to be able to enjoy the overclocking ability of this card in quiet.

780Ti: 50% more vram, on the heels of 690 performance, no random SLI issues. Even though they generate frames at a similar pace, the 780Ti will have 1/2 frame less latency. It throws all its hardware at each frame. 690 uses half the hardware for each frame.

All great arguments, but ...

Even though they generate frames at a similar pace, the 780Ti will have 1/2 frame less latency. It throws all its hardware at each frame. 690 uses half the hardware for each frame.

Latency with multi gpus doesn't work that way - on 690 it does takes twice as much time for 1 gpu to render a frame, but gpus don't wait for one another - workload for each gpu is paced evenly by driver that alternates draw calls to different gpu each frame.
Latency is just as with single gpu still only affected by frame rate variance - and that's frame to frame view complexity differences, v-sync and background loading or whatever CPU is doing (possibly on a one poor single thread that also issues draw calls so fps tanks briefly but horribly).

One of the most useful things I found for dealing with latency in SLI was changing vsync methods between the games settings, adaptive, and normal vsync + triple buffering. Though when it stutters at a lower framerate you're boned.

I was just trying to make a point regarding 780Ti vs 690. 290x "done right" could be as you say close.

At 33 votes to 1, the 780 Ti is totally running away with it!

I guess the choice is clear. ;)

I'm just gonna wait a bit for the price to drop and then buy it. Perhaps as a nice Christmas present for myself.

Single GPU or bust, I have a 7970 and 7950 in my main rig and CrossfireX is literally turned off every time I install a new driver, as I have too many stuttering issues with my games (possibly due to 120Hz monitor?) I think you'll be good with the 780 Ti and honestly, even though the stock cooler is pretty, are you really going to be staring at it 24/7 to justify not getting a much better aftermarket card? My computer is housed in a Fractal Design Define XL R2 inside my desk, so my opinion could be different. :p
