Umm... a bit of forum friendly advice....

I'm not even going to watch the youtube clip as it's almost 6 minutes long. If you're looking for information it's always a good idea to summarise your point and then refer to a link to show what you mean or back up your summary. I think blind linking is a bit 'unhelpful'.

So, without watching that clip i can't respond to your question.

Back flag, although the best of the series, is very inconsistent. Parts of the game are done with great care and that is why all the shortcomings show more easily. For example, a stormy weather while in a city at harbor - thunder, lightning, strong wind, wild sea and perfectly peaceful boats in the harbor .... they are not moving on the wind at all. Things like that break immersion, all they needed to do was to make boats wobble much more at storm while anchored.
Also water reflections are very very selective ...

he's trying to make a fancy press styled video that goes into great detail (looks like he's done several games), a big graphics review as opposed to a game review, wtf is the problem? do you complain to digitalfoundry?

i will check his other videos since i'm not going to have these games anytime soon to test out for myself

even if it's boring or useless, there's obviously some effort put into it with custom UI elements, varied captures from the game, lots of points laid out...

Oh my, me and my wife been saying that about the 3rd one as it seemed much much inconsistent than the 2nd and i so spoiling the game to much never mind the lame ass spawning. Just got worse though the releases

If Black Flags like that or even worse than the 3rd i will wait till it's a $5 game and more likely opt in getting Assassin's Creed Liberation although that will depend on how well they did with it.

Graphics wise, there's only a few improvements and nice touches to the game. Where the game truly shines is Character Development and Story Progression. Ubi really mixed the formula here and we get to understand the story even more. Also this is the first AC game that got me grinding (back then I could just take missions on, but here I really need to upgrade both Edward and the Jackdaw.)

Also exploration wise there's a lot to do in the world. I've finished the game a few days ago, and I still find myself exploring the world the such. Truly deserves the Next Gen label.

What I didn't like is the optimizations. Compared to AC3, since there are only a few additions to the graphics (God rays and what not) some old PC's can't handle those (even if they are DX11 ready cards)

playing on my Laptop on rather Low-ish settings with 18-35 FPS.

STILL WAITING FOR WATCH_DOGS

My nit picks about AC IV have nothing to do with graphics or physics, in fact it has one of the best game worlds of any game out there. My nit pick, and it's largely my adapting to the learning curve, is that many things are locked out early on and naval battles seem like a real grind. Even with weapons and armor about 50% upgraded, you have to really be careful where you pick fights with the Jackdaw. They've also locked out fleet building to anyone that borrows, rents, or buys the game used. This makes it pretty hard to even know if fleet building is very intuitive, helpful, or interesting to use unless you buy the game first and find out after the fact.

I would rather they had designed the game more flowing and hands on than menu assignments of fleets. Like assassin recruits of prior games, it feels more like a board game than an immersive experience at that point. For instance give me the choice of stealing ships and repairing and sailing them once boarded and beaten, vs just using them for scrap. Give me the choice of sailing them myself or appointing one of my crew to do so. Let me acquire two to 3 escort ships as I sail vs forcing me to build and use a fleet system via menu assignments. It's this method of unavailable areas not shown on the map and constantly having to sail between detection cones or pick on the rare one lone ship piecemeal early on in the game that makes it feel like drudgery.

If Edward can all by himself sneak aboard a Spanish gallion and claim it his own merely by killing the captain, yet see someone else it sail off vs being able to significantly upgrade his ship with it or even sail it himself, there's clearly something wrong with the gameplay design. As much as I struggled with syncing some naval battles first try in AC3, at least they were paced and balanced better. I'm hoping things will feel more flowing once I upgrade the Jackdaw, and I certainly hope I'll be able to acquire and sail other ships, but if it comes down to having to constantly stop at a planning station and send out ships via a fleet assignment menu, I'll be bitterly disappointed.

This is by far the best AC game yet. I own it on three platforms and let me tell you...ps4 and pc look the same to me. The ps3 version is playable but not near as nice. Like playing it on pc with medium graphics.

I've settled on working through the PS4 version as I enjoy using the controller. I would have gladly played through the PC version but it didn't look any better so i figured why bother?.....

The guy in the video has a very annoying manner of speaking.

On the other hand, I saw my friend playing AC4 this weekend while he was over, and it looked pretty impressive while he was cruising around on the water. Looked purdy ;)

Part of what makes it hard to make such a game well optimized is it has a pretty decent ocean wave and weather system, and when that kicks up in conjunction with the AI and physics activity going on during heavy ship boarding, well, it's quite a drain on resources. I'd love to see it on my neighbor's new PS4, but for some reason he chose to buy Killzone Shadowfall. That game does look very nice, but he doesn't adapt well to FPS games with moderately challenging AI. He does far better than I since I suck with gamepads in general, but I can see he's not enjoying the experience even with the option of having the drone battle for you, and he's only playing on Normal so far. There's some console games I'd love to play, but I'm not going to labor over all the time and frustration it would take to get used to using those damn gamepads, and this gen of consoles has seen very few exclusives thus far anyway.

As far as AC 4's graphics, there are a few features omitted as pointed out in the video, some rather curious since they probably wouldn't be nearly as taxing as the aforementioned, but overall it's a very pleasing visual package. I also like the gameplay despite upgrading feeling a bit grindy and repetitive. It's still plenty dynamic enough just due to the many options of where to pick your battles and what tactics to employ, even in boarding. I mean hell you don't HAVE to swash buckle swords in hand every time. You can take most required enemies out by manually mounting a side gun, or swing to their mast and repeatedly air assassinate, or shoot your pistols, use blow darts, etc. Then there's all the side stuff you can do. I also think too many people complain about the storms being a pain. If you hate them, don't engage in battle during them and steer away from them or fast travel away from them when exploring. It's a bit contradictory that you can't let go of the ship's wheel during storms, yet can fast travel, but at least they give you that option.

Perhaps most ridiculous is the many people complaining that the game brings nothing new, that it's the same old type of story, characters, gameplay, blah. blah, blah. These people are aspiring fiction writers, and unlikely to succeed at it.

Actually, as a person that aspires to be another storyboard writer/artist, it brings some new things on the table.

SPOILERS BELOW READ ON IF YOU WANT:

In the past AC games, we see that the protagonist are often introduced into the order (Assassin or Templar) at a rather young age or early on in the story. In AC4, we see that Edward only becomes a true Assassin at the end of the game but eventually leaves. Another is that He didn't play a rather big part in the middle of the story, he acted much like a mediator through it. Unlike in the first games, the middle part is where the game usually develops tension.

IMO, Edward develops regret as you play the Assassin Missions, and starts to see the Assassin Order as something that would fill in what he lacks. In other AC games, the protagonist have seen how the Assassin Order works and they have swore to live by it.

But that's just my own insight. AS SAID BEFORE THERE ARE SPOILERS

That's also part of the dichotomy of having a pirate be the assassin. He's torn between being totally free and living under the code of the assassins. Personally I can see why many critics praise the game for finally having a protagonist that isn't easily lead. It's about time IMO.

That's a great change in formula if you ask me. But sticking to topic, What does the option "God Rays" really do? I really can't see the difference between leaving it on and off.

And also it seems that you get more FPS if you set you Ambient Occlusion Method to HBAO if you have an Nvidia Card, rather than the simpler SSAO 0.o

How so ? and in what way you think he can improve the narration process?

It seems to me in this video that many words throughout are overly accentuated, and sometimes mixed with random pauses. Not sure if it was the editing and/or mixing, but it just stood out a bit.

But perhaps I was a little blunt and rude in my initial post; my apologies, especially since after your post I figured that I unknowingly insulted you  Sorry :respect:

arent most youtube videos edited with fast cuts & long streams of text? it wasnt too bad for me, i'd rather not have a 20min video

& again it reminded me of some press videos/reviews, especially if they have to air on tv

What does the option "God Rays" really do? I really can't see the difference between leaving it on and off.

So called "God Rays" are basically sunlight broken into several shafts of light when beaming through trees and such. I haven't tried it with them off, but if you're still seeing the shafts it could be that when they're turned "on" AO is applied to them, and more noticeably when on High. If so, it would likely be more noticeably differnt on Nvidia GPUs capable of the HBAO+ setting.

I am quite amazed that it can run on a scaled down 7800GTX @ 720p medium settings (PS3).

Look at the sun or the moon through vegetation or behind a building.
You should be able to tell the difference. Between low and high, difference is minimal as seen here

Theirs no pause.. he just goes and goes..
We did pauses in past videos (ARMA 3) , but the video got longer as a result, videos are already long with no pauses and some people complain. we would love to have more time to present all of our captured materials, but that would stretch the length beyond 10 min.

No no no, it's ok .. that was your opinion and it matters to us .. the random pauses thing is a sometimes an error in audio editing, or a deliberate thing to stress a point.

If it's not too much trouble can you elaborate on what do you mean by "overly accentuated"?

Look at the sun or the moon through vegetation or behind a building.
You should be able to tell the difference. Between low and high, difference is minimal as seen here

I am quite amazed that it can run on a scaled down 7800GTX @ 720p medium settings (PS3).

the way devs 'extract' more power from the ps3 is by doing some graphics on the multicore cell cpu, i first read about this in a low level uncharted 2 PDF presentation

consoles are very interesting when looking at efficiency & new paradigms
