Will this processor work?

I accidentally damaged my processor 3 days ago when I removed it from its bag:

I have a few questions:
1.Can a damaged processor cause damage to the motherboard?
2.Is recommended to try to use this processor?
3.Will this processor work? I didn't test it yet.

Just buy a better one. Its a $5 CPU

It seems like you've damaged some of the actual electronic components. That kind of damage will make that processor absolutely worthless. Trying to power it up will be a crap shoot. It's unlikely (though not impossible) to damage the mobo, but even if it POSTs you're looking at a crippled chip.

Given that this is a Celeron D from a 775 socket, why are you even asking about it? The chips haven't been made in years, and a suitable replacement could only be found as a used item. If you're bent on socket 775 I might be able to do something for you, but this chunk of silicon needs to be put to pasture.

there are still some used 775 socket cpu out for sale which is cheap. If you can do something about your wallet.

While I've seen CPU's in this state in totally normal working order, its just really hard to say without just testing it out. Sometimes its like nothing is wrong, but I can just as well see it being as dead as a dodo.

I don't think it'll damage the motherboard however.

is there an official intel diagram to see what that piece does? let's say it's similar to VRM phases, with 1 less phase, the others work a little harder, maybe have a shorter life, etc... or if it was a switch, imagine if you unlocked the multiplier hah

The damaged part is actually a filter capacitor, so if the CPU is getting stable enough voltage, loss of one isn't a big deal.

That being said, it was a crappy CPU even when it was brand new, and now it is a major pain to run anything above WinXP on it (better yet, some lean Linux distro)...

Very possible that would be the case and have a working example here I can relate to.
Sometime ago I went to delid my Socket 939 Opty 165 chip and did some damage in the process to it. Although the chip still works, it acts crazy with certain benchmarks I run it with. If I try to run either PI Fast or Cinebench 11.5, the chip acts normally and even gives some great results but if trying another such as Super PI or WPrime 1.55, it's error city all over the place.
BTW I have delidded a few others successfully, the 165 being my only flub/failure to do it right.

You'll be extremely fortunate if it shows nothing wrong with it at all, that resistor was there for a reason and if it's going to affect it, you'll find out sooner or later.

I bet later, much later. I doubt I will find it before I die because that is an "for emergency" CPU (to be used only in emergency cases). And as the time goes on, newer CPUs are made and bought and the chances of really needing that CPU one day decreases a lot.

That's good, at least it wasn't something you'd need to rely on.
