Never upgraded from a basic microsoft mouse (Play games and hesitant towards change)

So I generally hate upgrading things. I can't tell you how long I played competitive games online with a small 15 inch monitor and it took me forever to get a 21.5 incher and upgrade my specs and such.

Recently, I finally upgraded my keyboard as well. I had a typical Dell keyboard forever and recently got a Razer Blackwidow and I love it. The two days learning how to use it were painful but now I am completely used to it.

So, I've been buying "Microsoft wheel mouse 1.1A opticals" for years now. Literally I've been using this same shitty mouse for like 10+ years. I've gone through at least 5-6 of them. I think it's time to finally upgrade to a new mouse. I don't need something completely unnecessary like a Naga. Honestly left click right click and middle mouse is all I really need.

So my main concerns are, since I've been using such a crappy mouse is my sensitivity going to be affected? What is the best way to transition? I don't really want to have some insanely different sensitivity and have to get used to it and be handicapped in games for a while.

Also, I don't really understand how DPI works or what it is. All I know is that the DPI on these mice is like 400, and the ones on the most common Razer mice can go up to 5.5k~

I've been looking at:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AAS888S/?tag=tec06d-20

But I don't want to have to go through a new sensitivity/drastic change. How can I make it easier to transition?

More DPI = faster mouse movement. Most Razer Mice let you adjust this using drivers so you shouldn't experience issues of it being to high(I never go over 2500DPI).
Razer's are my go to mice for comfort never held a mouse that felt better than my Naga(same general shape as Death Adder).

It will more than likely take a little time to get used to, but you should have more precise movements one you learn the mouse.

It's best to set the mouse sensitivity to 6/11 as this will give you a 1:1 ratio for mouse movement. (More info here: http://www.overclock.net/t/173255/cs-s-mouse-optimization-guide)

From there you can set the mouse to whatever DPI is comfortable for you.

This is what my mouse is currently set at. Hypothetically, if I get a new mouse and my sensitivities in game and under the mouse settings are exactly the same. Will it generally feel the same? Or will I still need to get used to it because of the DPI changes?

Hey that mouse is quite good.

Me I really like the RAT7, but it's way way to expensive for me, and it's not for everyone.

You will have to find a mix of a good dpi setting and in-game sensitivity setting.

I used a Deathadder 3.5g (older version) for awhile. The max DPI was 3500, but I ran 1800 because it felt better on the windows desktop. Some people go as low as 800 or even 400DPI.

I'm using the RAT9 and my hand gets sore after a few hours. I used to the the 5 button Microsoft optical mouse, very close to OP's.

I Do have very large skinny hands however.

Gaming mice usually let you adjust the DPI. If the mouse you get allows you to set its DPI to whatever your current mouse has (I'm guessing 400), it should feel pretty much the same. Most mice give you options like 400/800/1600, some mice even let you set just about any DPI in steps of like 90 or so.

Am I wrong for using a DPI that low still? Would it potentially be better or enhance my experience in different games (Mainly League of Legends ATM) and is 400 the actual DPI for that mouse? How can I tell what my DPI is set at or is that the only setting for this out of date model. I'm assuming it's probably the only setting.

You are correct, there is no adjustment. IMO DPI is a personal preference. My DPI preference is around ~1600 for fps gaming and is what i use at home. At work I use an OEM dell mouse that came with the computer. I can't say that I notice a huge difference when not gaming.

Seeyatt352, it would be nice to give us what resolution are you using. Because 1600 CPI on 1366x768, may enable you to cross the diagonal of the monitor with a single swipe, but same CPI on Full HD- you will need to keep swiping a bit :D. I'd say don't buy a mouse with a maximum CPI of less than 3200.

Hi

Using a Razer Imperator here DPI adjusted on the fly with two buttons set back from the mouse wheel, had minor issue with a mouse matt once that the Imperator just did not like the surface and thus was non responsive, but have never looked back.

Note: did not install Razer's own software Edit: [allegedly DRM like behaviour] [google this, worth doing some research]; just allowed default windows 7 drivers.
