Bitcoin "banks" stealing money, "suicide" of a bitcoin banker, the craze has leveled off, specialized bitminer hardware, supply catching up with demand, cudaminer and we're getting into the PC buying parts drop-off time of the year all contribute to this.

AMD cards recently were being used more for scrypt mining (litecoin, dogecoin, and others).

There is not yet any specialized hardware that'll do scrypt mining with more efficiency than a GPU.

If you look at the chart mining using a GPU isn't profitable for bitcoin. You mine the alt-coins like litecoin and sell for bitcoin. Because of this the rest of your assessment is correct.

The demand is down because the current profitability of alt-coins is not enough to sustain the premium the resellers were charging. Bitcoin prices haven't changed significantly over the past two months, but alt-coin prices have crashed. Gamers are still buying GPUs for mining on the side, but the current profitability precludes capital investment in mining farms. This mining farm purchasing is the demand that has dried up and is the reason why prices are down.

Here's some financial numbers to explain this. At the height of the alt-coin boom, a R9 280X could gross > $400/month/card, so buying cards just for mining farms made a lot of sense. Now that same card can gross about $60/month/card, and if electricity costs more than $0.27/kWh, you lose money. If your electricity is very cheap at $0.07/kWh (like where I live) the net is only $45/month/card, which makes buying a card just for mining a questionable investment at best. With a 7 month period just paying back the capital, the card will probably be superseded by 20nm GPUs before the owner ever makes a gain.

Just to add, I tried this mining and I will have to pay $0.31/kWh, due to spending more than my Tier 2 limit, so my net gain was very minimal say may be at the most $1 a day (mining with my spare 7870), I could just save that by not gaming daily and not watching TV daily lol!

Yeah I'm seeing the non ref 290x around $580 - 600 now too, but only the ASUS consistently at $600 or less. Apparently some are finding two 750 Ti cards in SLI are actually a better performance to energy cost ratio for bitcoin mining.

The GTX 650 Ti doesn't support SLI either, so it's not an unprecedented situation. Note that the GTX 650 Ti Boost does support SLI even though it's based on the same GPU. so there is a potential that a third GM107 card could support SLI.
