Software Argh, Windows 10. I hated Windows 7. I hate Windows 10 more. Give me back XP!!!
I'm going to be traveling a lot with my new job so I want to downsize my main gaming rig so I can take it with me.

I'm thinking of building a SteamBox type machine, but not with SteamOS, so mITX.

I'm looking at the A10-7850K paired with one of my GTX 660Ti.

Will the A10-7850K be able to keep up with the GTX 660Ti?

It's CPU performance is very close to an i5-2400, so I don't think it will bottleneck a single 660 Ti. I have heard that faster RAM will scale up the A10-7850 quite a bit, up to maybe 2400 MHz. Since 2400 sticks are priced right next to 1600 parts these days, if you're buying new, you might as well get as sticks as high as your setup will run. My own experience with APUs is limited to an A8-6600 system I built around Christmas, and it didn't get a dedicated GPU until I sold it, but then it ran a lot better.

A i5-2400?

I was hoping a little better than that.

Of course I'll be overclocking the A10-7850K too using the stock heatpipe AMD cooler that came with my FX-6300.

Is this a new build? Why not keep the FX 6300?

Thats a bit generous, I think. If they both had the same ram, it should be a bit slower than the i5 2400. It won't bottleneck a 660ti regardless.

Really hard to find Kaveri vs Sandy direct comparison (gaming/game benchmarks)

unrelated but my i5 2550k (used) makes for a great mITX gaming mini rig, you can get used sandy bridge for similar price to Kaveri and it will crush it.

I was simply going by the relative compute performance of STOCK CPUs, as listed at the Passmark website (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html). The APU can be overclocked, the i5-2400 is locked, so the A10-7850 with a cooler upgrade will easily surpass the Intel part .

Id honesly consider doing a haswell itx build over an amd apu build. Like a 4670k, decent itx board, 8gb memory, all in a Corsair 250D case.

Don't get an APU unless you are going to use the iGPU. It's a waste of money. An i3 Haswell CPU will probably be better for gaming than even the highest end APU, mostly because the IPC on Intel CPU's is so much better.

That is actually untrue. Look at any i3 Haswell review and you'll see that its IPC advantage is often nullified by the core count advantage of the Steamroller APU. The game doesn't need to be multi threaded to benefit from more cores. Even if you're going the dedicated video card route the fact the Steamroller can be CF with its integrated GPU makes it a far better prospect for gaming.

Would that not fall into my, "unless you're planning on using the iGPU"? He said he is planning on getting a GTX 660Ti, which does not crossfire with an APU, ergo, get an i3. The i3 with a dedicated GPU--which isn't crossfired--outperforms the A10-7850K: http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/1...d-intel-clobbers-amds-apus-in-budget-gaming/2

EDIT: Just noticed that review used an i3 with an R7 260X against the APU with a crossfired R7 260X and the i3 still crushed it in everything but Mantle BF4. I stand by my recommendation of going Intel for gaming.

The OP hasn't got the GTX 660Ti yet so it isn't set in stone.

A10-7850k gets equal performance to i7 4xxxx @ 1080p with dGPU according to Guru.

Really comes down to which review you believe and which games you play.

http://www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/amd_a10_7850k_apu_review,16.html

The i3 wouldn't be a bad choice. The A10 7850k price seems a little expensive to justify. I would have through it would be cheaper by now.

Really comes down to ... which games you play.

This. OP could just as easily buy an iGPU disabled AMD such as the 760K, OC it, and have no issues with bottlenecks in man-shoot, man-drive, and man-drive-and-shoot games. I've had a 750K OC'd on a stock 8350 heatpipe cooler @ 4Ghz and had no problems with any AAA games, although some titles, like Crysis, and almost every RTS game, suffered greatly.

760K + 660ti will have no issues, but as you said, it depends ENTIRELY on what games OP wants to play.

Also, on a sidenote, Passmark is a terrible statistic to base anything whatsoever on, besides how Windows performs on said hardware.

like Red Machine said-

This helps the OP how? Red_Machine already said he has a GTX 660 already a few posts earlier.

Funny you didn't quote the Guru review showing the A10-7850k gets equal performance to i7 4xxxx @ 1080p. Or the fact that I said the A10-7850k is a bit overpriced making the i3 the better choice.

This helps the OP how?

It helps the OP by insuring that everyone giving advice get's all the info the OP has put out there, like his current system specs(which you should have looked at before giving advice, and you would have known the OP already has a couple GTX 660ti cards).

That Guru review shows that pretty much any processor will run Bioshock the same. Clearly Bioshock only cares about what videocard you run.

If you are buying a $150 processor, just buy a used Sandy. Then you can at least run Starcraft at a playable level.

Ebay shows some used i5 2400 selling as low as $100 with shipping.

Software Argh, Windows 10. I hated Windows 7. I hate Windows 10 more. Give me back XP!!!
Is this a new build? Why not keep the FX 6300?

I would, but there aren't any decent AM3+ mITX motherboards.

What resolution you plan to play?

Well, I'll be bringing along a 19" LED HDTV that I'll be using as a monitor. It has a resolution of 1366x768.

However, if the hotel I'm staying at has an HDTV that I can connect the computer to, I'll use that, so maybe 1920x1080 if the hotel TV supports it.

That review helped.

So it seems like most games are limited by the GPU so the A10-7850K is fine.

Id honesly consider doing a haswell itx build over an amd apu build. Like a 4670k, decent itx board, 8gb memory, all in a Corsair 250D case.

The problem with that is price.

The 4670k alone costs as much as the AMD processor and motherboard.

And decent mITX 1150 motherboards are about twice the price of decent FM2+ boards.

That Guru review shows that pretty much any processor will run Bioshock the same. Clearly Bioshock only cares about what videocard you run.

After doing a little more research, I think an A10-7700K will actually be what I'm getting.

It is $30 cheaper than the 7850K, and CPU wise is exactly the same, only the iGPU is weaker.

Since I'm using a dedicated card I'll save the $30.

The total cost for the FM2+ motherboard and CPU is only $230, and I'll have the ability to overclock, something I wouldn't have if I went the Intel route.

If you have a MC near by you can get the A10 7850 proc + mITX combo and save $40 on the bundle.

Another option, like somebody else mentioned why not get AMD 760K if you are going to use dGPU? Not sure if the proc has unlocked multiplier. For bit more you can get the A8-5600K which has unlocked multiplier.

Add this board which is on sale now.

Yes it will bottleneck in some games (Crysis 3, BF4, BF3, Tomb Raider) etc... but not all
