My 780 is running 1201 core on a 1440p monitor. The framerate is good, but the 290X gets better scores when overclocked (and isn't voltage locked, hee hee)

Closest resolution as an example I can find:

Two things wrong with that:

1. Only reference 780 there, but luckily I'm here to help :

2. We were not talking 2560 but 1080p :p

A little off topic here if I may. Man, you're a cool guy and all but, you must have the crappiest 780 if you say that. It's not even about the cooling on them, they're just mostly inferior in gaming to a good gtx 780.
Agreed!) Odd Amd love, gtx 780 just cheaper than 290x, but he doesn't realized this yet :)
In any case, the custom 780 and 290X would appear to perform identically, only the 290X is cheaper.

The price/performance on the Asus R9 280X DCII looks quite tempting, but I don't know how much "noticeable" the noise would be. I've built up the rig to be quite quiet even with a decent oc on the cpu. My old GTS 250 is quite noisy, and I really feel disturbed. The fans spin up even when I try to load a web page. I definitely don't want that. W1zzard did give it editors choice award, but also said it's quite noisy. And the power consumption is quite high too! So, still undecided... :(

You were talking about my experience (hence why you said off topic), which is with a 2560 res. In any case, the custom 780 and 290X would appear to perform identically, only the 290X is cheaper.

So in rebutal kind sir, they are not inferior. At all. Make a better choice of words when comparing factual graphs. I see 0.4 FPS difference.

On topic, OP is not looking for a 290X or 780, he's looking at 280X and 770. Different kettle of fish.

Odd Amd love.

Well in all honesty, it is ok playing a game with speakers or headphones. Only if it is mining or doing something uber intense is it really noisy. The windforce version is quieter though, and by quite a noticeable margin - again only applies rev2.0 not rev1.0. Also the Asus is uber heavy fyi - over 1kg iirc.

My bad, I was just making a connection between what you said and what op asked for originally. I wanted to suggest to the op to wait a little bit, save some money and get a 780. Of course everyone here is biased, giving advice from personal experience, but I'm far from being a fan boy, given the fact that this is my first nvidia card in about 9 years. Now, in regards to the price, I agree amd is a bit cheaper, but in my country not by a lot for 290x vs 780. It's not a decisive factor for me, given the fact the difference is small.

Glad to hear that, before my 780 I was running two 7950's, and before that three GTX 570's, it's nice to get a feel around the market for what each side has to offer. Some people around here get one idea stuck in their heads and just refuse to look at reviews without getting a little more than jolly about a brand.

BF4 supports mantle which provides a tasty boost on AMD cards when enabled. I'd lean toward the 280x over the 770 tbh.

I'd choose the windforce version from Gigabyte. Just be sure to get a rev2.0 version as it is way quieter than the rev1.0
@THE_EGG awww crap my R9 270X from them is a rev1.0 ... duh, is this a Bios change? in the fan profile?

also comming from a R9 270X user who had a 770 before then switched to a 270 then a 580 then back to a 270X: the 770 are still a good card to go (4gb if possible ... sad my local store did the giveaway for the 2gb and not the 4gb version of my R9 270X  )

Ah, OCUK has some awesome deals on the custom 290X every week. Last week you could get a 290X for £320 but only 16 were available, whereas you're looking at ~£400 for a good quality 780, and they're rarely on offer :(

I'm not sure of all the changes for the rev2.0 of the gigabyte 280x, but the differences I noticed were;
1) a different windforce x3 cooler. rev2.0 has the newer more aggressive design whereas rev1.0 has the smoother, rounder design (which imo looks bad). Note; although newer it is still a plastic shroud unlike on the r9 290 or gtx 780 which are both metal.
2) I think it has a BIOS change too but not entirely sure
3) the reinforcement bar is A LOT stronger on rev2.0 than 1.0.
4) and my rev2.0 came with bf4 :) unlike the 1.0 which did not.

there might be more, but that's what I noticed.

No mining, but a LOT of media playback, which W1zzard said was particularly noisy. I don't mind the weight. On the plus side though, I've been hardly using the speakers since I got the Audio Technica ATH-M50. My main concern is the idle noise. I hardly turn off the pc - there's torrents running all the time. So, a constant noise CAN be a problem - particularly in the winter, when no fan or AC is running to mask that. The gigabyte isn't there on any of the online stores which would deliver for free to my location, but of course I can get it from a local store. The problem is aesthetics - my rig is black/red :banghead:

rev2.0 has a black pcb so no worries there! :) Under idle the Asus is just fine imo, the difference in noise is minimal between the two at idle.

Unavailable and pre-tax :) Also, I'm getting tired of your overall attitude over the past few months, and the countless times you provide misinformation. We all notice it, and if it continues to happen I'm just going to start reporting your posts.
I am already reporting you, because of your abusive, negative, unkind behavior.

Unavailable? It's also cheaper than every 290x on newegg (all before tax).

I agree with everything else.

Sorry, Newegg and its automatic UK setting shows it as pretax and unavailable. Of course the prices of GPU's in the US and the UK are quite different. Our shops don't overcharge because of cryptocurrency.

Maybe we should make it fair and quibble on an online game, as we both use NVidia cards and they are clearly superior for online gaming. :D (I'm not actually serious, that's total nonsense)

W1zzard did give it editors choice award, but also said it's quite noisy.

It runs at 72 degree C. You can always trade temps for less noise.

And the power consumption is quite high too! So, still undecided...
From W1zzard's review:

  • High multi-monitor and Blu-ray power consumption
You are using only 1 monitor, aren't you?
