Guise, don't forget the Intel has hyperthreading feeding off those godly cores. They've perfected singlecore/multicore performance. People go to AMD for cheaper chips that in some games, work better than Intel. It's all on how you want to do something.

I have a q6600 oc@3.2ghz, it was able to play some games (far cry 3, bf3, hitman abs, grid 2, metro 2033). Maybe those games are not the most cpu demanding but it run them nicely. I can barely feel any difference when I compare oced q6600 vs fx6300 at stock freq or fx6300@4ghz.

I agree Q6600 is an old power hungry chip but after read these two articles I can verify it is a good chip nowadays in terms of performance for a basic gaming pc.

well decided that for the money i want to spend. and the performance i wanted to gain for that money i had to go amd. went allong and bought used..
so its a gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P and fx-8120 Figured a 6300 would have been better really but prices are what they are and wife being quite tight im lucky to have pulled any sort of purchace off. only having 4gb 2x2 1333 for now. will get that changed to 2x4 or 2x8 in the next few weeks or in a month or so.
not really unhappy about it whole lot cost less than a second hand i5-2500k..

i do realize that i got a builldozer and not a piledriver and im sure i will be put in my place for that. but every where i looked this chip is better than a q6600 hopefully some magic with mantel and junk like that can get more out of the unused cores (doubt it) or atleast the gpu can utilize them.

but i I spent less than expcted which is always nice. and the wife even seems happy as she had seen my £300+ wishlist. then my amd £160 wish list, and in the end i managed to get the stuff i needed for more than £60 under my lowest build price.
I think really its not to bad of a build for less than £100

OP will see a speed boost. I'd like to hear some feedback on the multitasking performance coming from that rig.

Q6600 is still a good chip, but incredibly hot. If you don't need to upgrade - don't do It. I have Phenom II X6 1045T and I don't want to upgrade. I saw how newer intel chips performs (i7 860, i5 2500, i5 4670K) and It's not a big difference in my apps and games.

Of course Q6600 is much slower but you're talking about games, not Blender, Sony Vegas, Photoshop etc.

Since all along you have been speculating wheras I've recounted experience he will be better off, and my earlier point is games Will use all 8 integer cores of even my obsolete cpu so an eight core is where the entry point neefs setting now for long term pc gamer ownership imho.
An I5 has not got 8 even with Ht so an I7 is intels best bet at this point imho or an 8 core amd, you can call it and me what you want but ill still be right vario and ddr3 alone smoothed out some frame rate inconsistency for me so the Op should be quite happy with his new pc.
Oh and I have an i7 920 its not bad and will still be adequate for most games but unsurprisingly given its age it does Not outperform an 8350 or an 8150 for that matter.
Still a good chip for my steambox though.

Basically, an i5 is just an i7 w/o HT. Actually, all of that type of chip is made off of the same exact die. The i3s, i5s, and i7s are the same thing, just with HT or cores disabled due to issues with HT and/or that core.

I suppose I did sound unsure.
I know all that , , I've been around a while mate ty.
And because I was there when all this shit came about I already advised as well as its possible to do.
No console uses Ht both main (for the foreseeable future) consoles have 8 amd cores, four good intel cores may well out compute 8 low power amd cores but if games are made to use 8 efficiently then four probably won't cut it in a few years when game devs start maxing the new console architectures.

lets not forget the memory hes running is dd2 that alone warrants a upgrade hes getting passable performance because hes running at 1280x1024 most likely a old CRT
the cheapest i5/b86 ddr3 1333 will run circles around it for about ~300

Depending on when the next console hardware update will be, I'm sure Intel could get a slip in.

(Let's start picking out the new names for new consoles)

Easy ps4 and xbox 360 doh, id vote 32 arm 64 cores in each with 8 x86 side by side and a 4000 cored gpu each all on one die but that be 5-10 years off when tsmc and glo fo have 10nm sorted

lmao how many times.
my monitor is a 1080p 60. my desk top resolution is. 1920x1080

its only games i change the resolution on.
i have done it for years. its just easier to see stuff off in the distance and tell that its something i need to shoot, than it is to see the same thing at a teenie tiny scale.
Sure it looks a little bit better (its not enough better to to make this fuss about it you make though) but i dont have a giant monitor. its something in the region of 22" id guess.. and im not that close to it either lol...

I feel like i should start gaming at 320x240 just to wind you up lol.

as for the cpu. I am looking at it as a quad core with some AMD version of HT.

I dont know, that 8120 might have been the worst choice you could of made.

Not sure what games you're playing, but increasing the res on a game doesn't make everything smaller like it does icons on the desktop. Unless you're playing an isometric view, pixel based game like Diablo 2.

Indeed. It adds more pixels, which increases details.

320x240 That takes me back to my C-64 days but I think it was 320x200 of pixelated bliss. :)

well mother board cpu and ram for about $160 usd cant really be a bad choice imo. a second hand i5-2500k would cost me more here and thats without a mother board or ram. (i did look), for a board ram and an i5 i would have been looking at about $507 is it really 350% better? "i know it isnt by the way"
so if all we are looking at is bragging rights. better single threaded performance, and a mixed bag of even equal to worse than and better than gaming performance depending on the game, id rather save the money lol. (would be stupid not to wouldnt you?)

but i do think a 6300 would have been better than an 8120.

lmao how many times.
my monitor is a 1080p 60. my desk top resolution is. 1920x1080

its only games i change the resolution on.
i have done it for years. its just easier to see stuff off in the distance and tell that its something i need to shoot, than it is to see the same thing at a teenie tiny scale.

There is no AMD version of Hyperthreading.
And if you play at 320x240, expect people to throw NVIDIA TNTs at you in the most loving manner.

well mother board cpu and ram for about $160 usd cant really be a bad choice imo. a second hand i5-2500k would cost me more here and thats without a mother board or ram.

In some benchmarks, the 6300 does beat the 8120, and is also cheaper from what I've seen.

Only advantage the 8120 has over the 6300 is the quad module configuration. 6300 is faster otherwise. But since you wanted advice, I'd advice you strongly not to buy an 8120. Buy an Athlon x4 760K if you are going budget.

Athlon quad to swap out a q6600 seriously your advice is below worthless.
A q6600 is as good a quad as is necessary for most present ported games as for the future a quad anything will suck balls and 8 cores wont simple.

I run a Q6600 with 7870 Le and have yet to run it problems with games at 1080p always 35+fps usually close to 50. I'd wait for Skylake.
