The fan will run when i start the PC, and it will stop when it is time for me to select my user and log in. Strangely before i install my Nvidia drivers the cards fan will not stop after i am done booting same with in safe mode. My motherboard is a GA-970A-ud3p and i have a gtx msi 670, My power supply is fine I have upgraded it and it was recommended to me and it works well. The graphics card to as it wa swell taken care of before i obtained it so i am unsure what the actual problem here is. I've checked the PCI cables, I have reinstalled/uninstalled my drivers multiple times so i am stumped the only way i can get fan activity is by using MSI afterburner but I can't even control the fan the fan just ramps up to 100% after i click something and it just stays at that speed which is very loud. This makes me feel it s a driver issue if its possible but i am unsure on what to do.

Driving me insane =/

Hi,
Is your card overclocked? Because I think this can happen if you overclock your card.

Try it in another pc and see if the same problem occurs. If it does I'd be contacting the seller. It does sound more software related though. I doubt (even if it was overclocked) overclocking could cause this. This has never happened to me before and I overclock pretty much every graphics card I can get my hands on.

Hi

Welcome to TPU

+1 THE_EGG

remove vga card clean the PCIe blade [use a coffee filter and isopropyl alcohol]
while vga card is removed clean the motherboard PCIe slot [use a can of air duster]
reseat vga card [*if same issue]

*test the vga card in another system, [**if same issue] return it to the **seller/retailer/e-tailer and or raise an RMA if still in warranty

Note: temp sensor may have gone bad [check temps with GPU-Z]

Get EVGA, precision X, and use it's fan control.
Set it to launch at startup.
Hope that helps, if nothing else.

I've tried pretty much every thing i think all i can say is i am 99.99% sure the fan stops spinning when the Nvidia drivers are running, weird considering it is a nvidia card..

The fan on your card might be dying. Whenever the drivers aren't loaded the fan is controlled by the BIOS of the card. The BIOS on the card will run the fan at basically medium speed constantly. Once the drivers are loaded they take over control of the fan and if the card is running cool the drivers will slow the fan down. Now, when I first got my GTX670s the minimum fan speed was 40%. This is the lowest I could set it in any software program. However, in recent driver releases the fan speed now allows me to go down to 10%! I would assume that means the default driver behavior has changed and the driver can now drop the fan speed below 40%.

Now, my guess is that with your card the fan will just stop spinning when it is set too low. So say the driver is trying to set the fan to 25%, and your fan won't turn at 25%, so your fan stops spinning once the driver loads with Windows. Some fans just will not spin when set below a certain %, but this can also be a sign that the bearing in your fan is starting to die.

Either way, I'd do what was suggested above and install something like MSI Afterburner and have it load with Windows and set the fan speed to a minimum of 40%.

Just in case....are you sure that the fans stop, or are they just spinning down to such a low speed that you can't hear them? What is the exact model? The MSI GTX 670 Power Edition Twin Frozr IV 2 GB was tested at 25db at idle, which is quieter than most rooms.

This I see it with bearing failures and odd sensor problems.

1. can you physically see it stop spinning.

2. If it did stop what does GPU-z/any other programs say the RPM/% is?

3. attempt to force start at a minimum using a custom fan curve.

when I use msi after burner much of the settings do nothing and sometimes when I mess around on it the fan jumps to 5k rpm and won't stop until I touch something again when I try to type in a fan percent and click apply it doesn't. Change the fan speed and goes to 0

Try uninstalling the nVidia drivers through control panel, then install the latest drivers and check the clean install option.
