Outlook asking cellphone number

Hi.

When I connect on my Outlook account they tell me I have 5 then nw 4 more days to enter my cellphone number beforte my access is blocked. I think they playing the game to force people to give more and more informations. I'm not into that game so I transfered all my emails to my Yahoo account. Does any of you have that thing also?

It is part of their security system. So if your account is compromised they can send a text to your cellphone with a code to verify your identity. It is part of their 2 step verification, supposedly you can enter an alternate email address instead of a cellphone number. You have to click like you are going to enter a cell phone, and on the page to enter your number there is an option to enter an alternate email instead.

If that doesn't work try this:

Click your name or picture in the top Outlook.com navigation bar.
Select Account settings from the menu that has appeared.
If you are prompted for a password:
Type your Outlook.com password over Password.
Click Sign in.
Open the Security info category under Overview.
Click Help us protect your account.
Choose whether you want to add a phone number or alternate email address under Help us protect your account.
Enter the email address or phone number (making sure the country code is set correctly and does not appear in the phone number itself).
Click Next.
Look for and open an email from "Microsoft account team " with the subject "Microsoft account security code" at the email address you selected or a call or text message from Microsoft.
If you received the code by email:
Highlight and copy the verification code in the message.
Paste the code over Code back at Help us protect your account.

Thanx but for me that's another way to get your information on what other mail provider you are using so they can know what share of market they have. None of their business if you want my opinion so they going to screw themselves!

You have to enter an alternate email with pretty much any new email account you set up for password recovery purposes. If you don't want to give them one of your main accounts just go create a random gmail account and use that. I have a gmail account that I pretty much use exclusively as an alternate account for my other accounts.

On yahoo, as on almost all places, it is starting to require a phone number for confirmation, for security purpouse it is great, but it can be traced, so they will know more about you...

And it doesn't really matter since Microsoft likely already has your cellphone number, pretty much every carrier sells their number lists to whoever wants them.

I swear newtekie1 and I were separated at birth sometimes. Everything he has said is 100% fact. Hell even my back up email is also Gmail lol. Also you don't need a cell phone for step 2 verification. House phone works fine.

Not setting up step 2 verification is stupid. Its not like you have any privacy anyway.

With virtually everything we do requiring passwords now, you are bound to forget something. Why would you NOT want a means to get your password reset if you forget it?

nice to hear, in indonesia, only God knows. although they say never share or sell number, i never trust them since many offers from credit card, insurance, spams, etc

Indonesia, Thailand, Philippinnes they all have calling centers that are paid by US corporations so many times people in America call for customer support it's over there. Countries with more loose laws you can be sure USA banks are behind when there is money to make. That why you must receive all these offers because they have your informations. Maybe they don't sell in Indonesia but they have in USA so buig corporations resend them back to foreign cvountries to banks and credit associations.

ISP can't sale informations but if you provide your number to Hotmail , outlook or whatever they nowhave your number. Duh!

don't listen to these fools who say the companies already have your info. These people probably give their bank account numbers to anyone. It's this kind of attitude that gets people in trouble with identity theft and privacy issues.

Don't give them your number if you don't want to. It should be your choice as a user what information to reveal to M$

Not to mention with the protection your ISP gives you by not selling your phone number it should be almost impossible for anyone to get you online. a combination of AV, locked doors, fake information when registering on forums including the fact that you are from Canada, your ISP promising they wont sell your phone number, knowing that you probably requested your phone number removed from public phone books, and absolute refusal to provide any kind of contact information when shopping online, and finally that nifty Screen blocker pretty much ensures that no one looking in your window can see what you are browsing.

All of this combined almost guarantees that no one will be able to know anything about you online including the fact that you have a youtube account.

yahoo is even worse, I heard they're like hand in hand with NSA, not that I hide something but still.. I removed it since then.

It was also spam infested email by default and I never gave my email away, it used it only for special purposes like job applications etc. and still got spam mails everyday..
