So I was working on trying to get my sata hard drive to show up in the bios. I had it showing up earlier, but I unplugged it because I didnt need it at the time. Well, Im retarded and I attempted to plug the power cable into the sata drive while the computer was on and when I did this, my whole computer shut off. Now, when I attempt to plug the sata drive in, it doesnt power on.

I thought that I did some damage to my system board but it has to just be the drive because the drive no longer works in any of my computers...

So, my questions is...

Is it possible to short out a sata drive by doing as I described above? :mad:

did you have the data cable plugged in too or did you just attempt to plug in the power?? I couldn't see a prob with plugging in the sata power by itself but I wouldn't do it if the data cable was plugged in tooo... you mighta killed it huh??

That's surprising because they are supposed to be hot-swappable.

Is the drive still under warranty?

I didnt have the data cable plugged in...

The thing that sucks the most is that it was a 500 GB hard drive.

Now I am running off an old 40 GB. (Good thing I put my Windows installation on my 40 GB!!)

I think "hot swappable" refers to just the data side.

I thought hot swappable was for e-sata not sata 1 or 2.. anyways I can't see how you could have blown it up unless you stuck the power connector on back to front and it shorted out...

It definitely sounds like you shorted something out...

Can you here/feel it moving when you plug it in an turn on pc...

Just RMA the drive... it should have at least a 3 year warrantee on it.

It is def not powering on anymore. No turning. It does get really hot though. So hot I cant hardly touch it.

Because of that I think I blew it.

BTW- I may have accidently but the molex connector on backwards when I blew it. Would that seriously mess it up or short it out?

something is wrong here. i know for a fact that i could remove my sata drive from y desktop shile it is on without a problem. i also know for a fact that i could remove the sata drive from my hp mediavault file server without a problem while it is on.

was the hdd hooked up to a "real" sata power port (as oopesed to one that goes from 4 pin molex to sata)? if so, then that is the problem. those sata adapers dont work with hot swap.

yes!!! that would definatly short it out! but, remember that sata power cables are keyed. it ont let you plug it in backwards.

Im pretty sure that when I hooked it up, I tried to force the molex connector on the sata drive backwards. My sata drive allows you to use molex or sata power connectors.

Seriously though...for the hard drive to get scalding hot right when I plug it in and for it not to turn...

It has to to be a bad drive.

I can use molex or sata power connectors with my drive. I was using molex when I blew it up.

that would explan it. those 4 pin molex cables cant hot swap. they can only be connected.disconnected when the computer is off. i know someone is going to come out and say that im wrong, but, i have seen psus fried so much from someone conencting/disconnecting something while the computer is on.. chances are that both your psu and drive are fried.

Yes only the SATA power cable is for hot swap and actually plugging the MOLEX while the system is on will lead to spark and burning the drive.
