with a 5820K and a 970 it would be technically pointless, even if you set it to be calculated by the CPU and not the GPU.

altho i was considering the same option but with a GT730 2gb ddr3 but my configuration is 4690K Maximus VII Ranger 16gb Ram and a Asus R9 290, and even there, i take i will see no real improvement.
for the number Physics enabled games ... even calculation by CPU (which is actually what my rig does) is enough.

i saw this article http://www.volnapc.com/all-posts/how-much-difference-does-a-dedicated-physx-card-make
this guy had nice results on his titan set up at least 10% performance gain with a gtx 650 which has about the same capabilities with my cards..........
hum i never ran into that review, interesting indeed ... i might give a shot with my GT730 X8 ... but none of the games he play are in my library (tho i tested Metro Last Light on my rig, as it is now in my Sys Spec)

well only 1 of the cons is about a "unless it's a reasonably priced card" (ok ... 2 are about mobo/psu upgrade ... ) so it's 3 on 8 but i get your point

about games i thing that we will see more games with physX in future ;)
not likely ... unless nvidia come with a more transparent approach (which is kinda an utopia) and for what PhysX add ... well ... that's only a personal opinion from my side

Since you already have the cards, give it a spin. I'd advice going with the GT740. Mainly, because it's built on 28 nm and will be much less power hungy from the GTS 250 with its 65/55nm die. Also, GT740 has 384 - CUDA cores vs 184 of GTS 250.

If you definately think you want a dedicated Phys-X card, the GT 740 would be better. It has the CUDA cores to handle it better. Really though, unless you're trying for a quadrillion fps, a 970 has more than enough spare processing power to also do your Phys-X. Or you can set for CPU, as @GreiverBlade suggested. Most gamemakers only code the Phys-X for CPU anyway from what I hear.

If you're going to do it anyway then the 740 would be a lot better than the GTS 250. According to the Geforce site the 250 uses a little over twice the power and doesn't perform as well. A GTS 250 is nothing but a rebadged 9800 GTX+. Great card for it's time (7 years ago) but inefficient today.

This... but I sure as heck wouldn't bother wasting that energy considering the 970 will power through anything even with GPU physX enabled...

GT740. It uses less power, and has more cuda cores to process PhysX.

It is worthless anyway, but if you must, go with the GT740. It sounds like you already have the cards laying around anyway, so there is no harm in doing it. I wouldn't buy a card for dedicated PhysX though, the money would better be spent towards a second card for SLI.

Which one would be best... my answer would be, the one that have GPU clock closest to your main GPU. And the more CUDA cores the better. No need to have more than 256MB graphics memory.

Bro, not all PhysX branded games use dedicated PhysX card, hell, to make matter worse, not all PhysX is Nvidia PhysX, that is hardware-accelerated physics-simulations that require Nvidia GPU. Confusing huh? Basically, you don't need an Nvidia GPU for PhysX unless you want the hardware accelerated features. Physics like collisions, rigid bodies and many others need only CPU to process and what with multi-threaded ability in PhysX version 3, today CPUs are strong enough to handle them. Physics effects that use particles (debris, smoke, etc), deformables (clothing, flags, etc) and fluids (water of course, with different viscosity) utilize hardware acceleration and that means exclusive to Nvidia GPU. HairWorks is not part of PhysX but part of GameWorks and it's not specialized to Nvidia GPU, any GPU with tessellation power can run it.

I know for sure that Batman, Borderlands Pre-Sequel and Metro Last Light... they can utilize "dedicated" card for PhysX. The minimum framerates will occur less with it, very nice performace.

I'm not sure with Shadow of Mordor and The Evil Within, the dedicated card usage spikes at starting up but then low all the time. And I don't see FPS improvement.

The latest AAA titles with PhysX; Far Cry 4, Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Unity, they don't utilize dedicated PhysX card.

Titles like Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Witcher 3, if you set PhysX Indicator to show when playing games will tell you PhysX is running on CPU.

PhysX can't be forced to utilize which GPU (or even CPU), you can however within the Nvidia control panel, designate which one or a card as dedicated Nvidia PhysX. But then again it's all up to the game developers to really implement which PhysX effects on which processor. And the only way to know if a dedicated card is being used as a PhysX processor is to monitor its usage when running game that you're sure using Nvidia PhysX effects.

Just my personal experience, I saw a 20% fps boost while having a 20% GPU usage reduction on my GTX660 when I plopped a GTX650 as dedicated physX in AC4 and Warframe. All other games seem to run better for some reason too.

I agree with the 740. I think there may be an issue running dedicated physx on older DX10 cards. I tried a dedicated GTX 280 alongside a GTX 970 in Batman Arkham Origins and could not enable high settings. Changing to a GTX 750 or running everything on the 970 fixed the issue.

Be interested in hearing if anyone else had a similar experience.

Not exactly the same, but Linus tried a small experiment. What he found out is that if the card used for PhysX is too slow or too away a generation from the main one it slows it down. Best case scenario is having the same or previous generation card as a PhysX one is what I understood generally from the video.

i will go with 740 first and i will show u the bench results here............ In about a week that all parts of my rig will b to my place!!!

Nice, good luck!

Just my personal experience, I saw a 20% fps boost while having a 20% GPU usage reduction on my GTX660 when I plopped a GTX650 as dedicated physX in AC4 and Warframe. All other games seem to run better for some reason too.

Oh man, I regret that I missed that patch for AC4 adding PhysX turbulence (mostly smoke). I finished the game before the patch release and uninstall it because I needed the space. Saw in youtube it looks awesome.

Not exactly the same, but Linus tried a small experiment. What he found out is that if the card used for PhysX is too slow or too away a generation from the main one it slows it down. Best case scenario is having the same or previous generation card as a PhysX one is what I understood generally from the video.

I saw that too! Ayup, basically the clock speed would be dragged down by the slower card.

I did test with distinct GPUs; the farthest gap 780+275 and the closest 780+970 (and swapped). 275 was dragging performance, like bottle-necking the speed rhythm. Of course 780 and 970 are close in clock speed. One thing to note that clock speed is consequential... when using 780 as main GPU, 970 (having a higher clockspeed) never did use Boost Clock it's always in Base Clock. But swapped, 970 as the main GPU, 780 will Boost its clock.

Speaking of benches, I wonder if I can use my GTX650 for Shadowplay and my GTX660 for gaming. RESEARCH TIME!

It is interesting. Tell me how it goes, man.

People who have tried this before said it was a waste of time and hardware because it does very little and only a handful of games support it. You would be better off not doing it.

Oh, so your one of those people who don't understand how markets work. You're starting to sound like a 12 year old. I don't have time to deal with this immaturity. Unsubbed.

How rude. Good riddance you unsubbed because you were stepping into the land of insulting someone for ignorance of a market.

Anyway, I can't get G-Force Experience to load up so I guess I gotta reinstall it.

If you have both cards as spare why not just test it with both cards and report back with some results since you started this thread.

He brought up something unrelated to the thread that I got worked up about in another. That's called baiting. How about you look a little more into what people are trying to do instead of taking sides so quickly. Also if you quote me, I still see the relies. :wtf:
