For $600 get a quad core?! The best of the Core 2's is the e6600, while the 6700 is just pointless. You can get a Kentsfield on your budget. I like the sound of that. Kentsfield.

This processor is 1/2 the cost, saving money for a more powerful quad-core that isn't doomed to die as it is fully usable AT THAT TIME, not 1-2 years in the future when celerons will almost be overpowering it.

You think AMD's gonna release quad cores for AM2?

There are quad cores for socket 775 right now, that work with existing chipsets. Rev. 2 intel quad cores will be out by the time AMD releases Barcelona (sept), which is still unproven and untested at this point.

He's buying his PC right now. Right now, the most powerful processor is a Quad core Intel.

They might, it's supposed to be coming soon anyway. Right now for AMD, AM2 is the most advanced socket, even though the quad cores will be made for AM3 or AM2+ at that time, it is backwards compatible anyway, so overall, yes.

Besides a new motherboard is nothing for this guy, if he can spend $600 just on a processor, I wouldn't be worried. Most of us here can build a whole box for $600.

If you spend 600 today it will be worth 35 bucks in the same time frame regardless of what you buy. might as well get the bad dog now

Besides, how do you know he can't take advantage of 4 cores, hat? A lot of audio and video production apps do take advantage of 4 cores or more. What if he's a heavy multi-tasker? If you can afford it, quad is the way to go.

*Is too lazy to read the debate*

I'd get a sub-$100 Athlon 64 processor. Good performance, low price, low heat, low noise, with plenty of room for such features as a gigabyte of RAM, an Nforce motherboard, and a reasonable video card. I know that Intel may own the performance crown, but for low to midrange offerings, AMD simply can't be beat :).

He's spending $600 on just the cpu, Zek. I don't think that qualifies as low to midrange. lol

Well, see, it's hard to say, because the title of this thread is "for PC under $600", so...I have to reccomend low/midrange offerings :).

No .

If you're going to spend such outlandish sums of money on a CPU, I can't wait to see what the rest of your system is going to be like :).

If I were you though, I'd be spending $200-$300 on a Core 2 Duo, the rest on a good liquid cooling system, and then overclock the fuck out of it :D.

Forget AMD, until we see their next generation of CPUs released.

I would get an core 2 duo e6600, as that would last a year or two.

Get a 775 motherboard that supports quad core too, that way you can upgrade once your e6600 gets sliggish

That should free up enough of your budget for a decent DX 10 card such as the 88000GTX. Dont rush the graphics card though, your better off getting a midrange DX 9.0 card such as the 1600 pro/XT or an 7600GT until we see what ATI has in store.

haha I agree with the conroe option but I'd sit it out until July 22 when the next intel price drop hits! that only two months away and look at what you can get for your money (this is only what was listed, they're probably be other cuts)

I can't justify doing it any other way, wait and buy the e6850 and 3ghz for only $266 not to mention they have increased the FSB on these, that leaves you $340 of your 600 to splurge on other parts such as SLI/Crossfire setup and you still have a crazy fast cpu

hey kuba,

If your buying NOW, pickup a intel based mobo capable of quad core (800/1033/1333 fsb), an e4300 and the ram you would like to use with your quad core when you get it. thats just my suggestion and save up for your quad core.
