does that effect the cooling effectivity? cuz the paint might have been a great conductor

the "paint" was a decent conductor, once you lap it, its copper which is much more effective.

so why put the paint on in the first place?

Conspiracy theorists will be able to answer that one best me thinks (or at the least, most entertainingly)
Well, Intel has to put the model number and other information somewhere on the CPU, maybe it's easier to imprint it on the other surface than it is to imprint it on copper?

It’s because naked copper like that oxidises really quickly. When it happens, the heat transfer is really impaired and it looks ugly. I believe the “paint” is actually a nickel coating to prevent this from happening.

Fair enough, and makes mroe sense than my nonsense

Now I'm having ideas of doing this to me CPU's IHS, and probably (well, much more likely) to my HSF

Cause from everything I read on a the C2D the IHS is soldered on.... plus I really dont want to crack the die

Yea you have to heat it up to unsolder it from it.

You'll void the warranty and very likely take a capacitor off if you arent careful.

:slap:

That's all i have to say to that comment..

It's more than likely electroplated onto the Cu. The thing is, if the Cu is VERY high grade, e.g.99.999999% O free then it'll be fine and not really oxidize, especially in a virtually anoxic place such as a high pressure interface between two metals with a TIM between the surfaces!

Lol, well, I like high grade metals, mmm makes me feel all warm inside thinking of the pure goodness of a monatomic treat like a big old block of Cu! Having done a good bit of chemistry I can pretty much visualize the issue, I think that helps :D Thanks as well, you've swollen my ego for the week lol
