topic about zen, suddenly we're back to AXP vs P4... Guess it's par for the course at TPU. lol

at any rate I stand by my statement that Zen should be far more competitive in gaming while still being behind in synthetics, server applications. So to keep up with the backwards in competitive history comparisons we could be looking at an Athlon vs Pentium 3 type scenario. Where the P3 Coppermine may have been faster in many places, but for a budget gamer, a 950MHZ Thunderbird Athlon would do ya. Of course while I would love to get back to an AMD rig, I seriously don't see myself changing cpu any time soon. So all I need from Zen is that it's gaming competitive and faster than my 4790K by say 2019. Not exactly ground breaking achievements.

I think it's safe to say the only reason Zen might be purchased a fair amount, is if they can manage near equal performance to Intel's offerings at a lower price point, and they've far from proven they can do that. If anything, it sounds lately like they're struggling to achieve that 40% more IPC than Bulldozer they spoke of.

Aften seing the images, i stopped at "8 cores and 16 threads". Wait what?

Is AMD using some sort of hyper threading on there ZEN cpu?

If yes, i Wonder how Intel will react to this and claim AMD is using there hyper treading.

Yes. Zen uses SMT (Symmetrical - rather than Simultaneous- Multi-Threading). The great Bulldozer CMT experiment has been mercifully put out of its misery.

There are differences, there are cross-license agreements (assuming they are still valid for IP this old), and AMD bought a lot of HT IP from DEC back in the day, and DEC's HT IP pre-dates Intel's.

Oh so thats whats going on. I am on intel side, but I am still want to se if amd finally can compete with intel when it come to performance. No because i want zen, but if zen can compete with intel. Intel might be forced to reduse cpu prices. Cause intel had the top marked for a long time and that made intel cpu prices to op.

I Mean i7 6950X is just to Much of a price tag at over 1700 USD.

Also, implying any of those games are capable of using more than 4 cores, 8 at best is just silly.
Troll fail.
Photoshopped old board is old.
Try harder.
What gave it away? Perhaps the IDE ports?

Yeah, well, use low clock, high thread Xeons that are meant for servers/workstations in games and you'll get the same results... This CPU isn't meant for gaming, it's meant for crunching where low clock and huge number of threads benefits it more.

Look I like AMD but my computer is rotting flesh...990FX isn't cutting it.
I've been waiting for the "1090fx" that never came.
AMD's system is like 8 years old.
It gets beaten by even the I3 cpu's and the Zen is maybe a I5....I'm f***ing pissed.

Even their videocard drivers are GARBAGE.
I'm sorry to be negative but this is too little, too late.

Look at this graph...the fm2+ Athlon it the top chip, not the 990fx platform.
wtf kinda company buys a gpu company and then screws its enthusiast base and builds a new useless socket with a apu....and the cards they do make get drivers that crash and a control panel thats a gutted POS.

This isn't a directed at the OP or anyone here but AMD

There was 280W tdp just at 1.7ghz btw

You actually believe anything that source claims? I thought the photo quite clearly disproved them to be as accurate as WCCF.

32 threads running against only 12....

Here is what I am going to start with on this.

First off as has been said that is an Asus socket F board with two ancient CPU's in it.
Second the 16 core Zen chips wont be packaged in that form factor in the current gen, from specs AMD has released they will be a pair of MCM's on a single wafer just like the current chips.
Third it doesn't matter in the slightest how many threads a unit has (and that would have 32 if its a pair of 16 core chips), if the game only addresses 4. That means a Core i5 6600K would perform the same as an i7 and so on.

You're complaining that you have a system that's 8 years old and is still being used to day? You also complain that same 8 years old system is getting beaten by Core i3 ? Sorry, but have I pointed out 8 years enough?

I'll grant that the ide port might have been the giveaway for some. But for me it was the dual socket. Seriously you have to have specific cpus in order to run dual socket and AMD has already said they aren't going to focus on the server market with zen.

So I seriously doubt there will be any dual socket capable Zen cpus any time soon. So if they actually ran any tests with that rig it would be impressive as hell to have a pair of opteron FX-70s get those kind of frames in modern games. We are talking a 10 year old setup designed for servers, not games. And yet the first 3 games were playable, not bad at all.

What we need is for AMD and Intel to trade blows, that's how we get better tech at better prices. I think Intel's been riding this thing out, passing along incremental upgrades in part performance as well as their prices ($1700 Broadwell-E extreme edition notwithstanding). AMD has a lot to overcome with Zen, they're playing catch-up on years and years of getting beat down in performance and energy consumption. During this time Intel got comfortable, started extracting a good deal more money for their superior product, even from the small market of enthusiasts (now, if you want to overclock, you gotta fork out loads for the K edition). Hopefully AMD wins back the performance, energy efficiency and open-endedness of their platform (that they've always had at least) to do some damage to Intel.

Intel's nonsense with OEM's never helped them and it's what kept them back the entire time even when they had the technological edge. We all know high end, end consumers don't make much profit. It's the OEM business and servers that bring most profit. And AMD was denied of that for years with "under the table" deals Intel made with OEM's.
