Windows 10 Creators Update Might Force Updates Even on Metered Connections

A wording change in the latest build of the upcoming Creators Update for Windows 10 has users on metered connections worried. In previous Microsoft Insider's builds of the Creators Update, the section of the license agreement pertaining to automatic updates said "updates will be downloaded and installed automatically, except over metered connections (where charges may apply)."

In this latest build, the wording has been changed to a more worrisome version implying updating may still happen for important updates: "We'll automatically download and install updates, except on metered connections (where charges may apply). In that case, we'll automatically download only those updates required to keep Windows running smoothly."

Obviously, this implies critical updates and such may still be pulled from a metered connection without prior user consent. Considering many "critical updates" from Microsoft today come in the form of "Patch Tuesday" rollups often nearing a gig, this could get expensive on a metered connection where users pay by the gigabyte or worse.

Does it bypass the Group Policy settings (to notify before download and install) on Pro and higher versions as well?
Also, the second "where charges may apply" has a misspelling.

I'm hoping that companies like Microsoft soon start advocating for the abolishment of metered connections/data caps. They really need to go.

It's not really here nor there, but currently I find myself with a few options for internet with no caps. For a while I only had one.

I could get a faster cheaper connection than my current one
BUT
new Deal =Agreeing to a Fixed term contract ( 12 to 18months Duration )
No gaurenteed increase in up/down Speed (distance from Dslam is the problem)
Download Data Cap put in place with penalty's for going over
Line Rental £18.99 nearly twice what i pay currently

currently i'm rolling 1 month contract unlimeted data Plan and line rental under £10

(FU---BT)
Circumstances dictate i cannot commit to a 12 month contract so while paying what i do suits my circumstances

No, they are becoming increasingly common stateside as well. I have a metered connection. If I go over 1TB, I pay out the nose. That said, 1TB is a lot of data.

My house uses a total of 25TB-ish a month.

I have two options in my area. Comcast or AT&T. AT&T is an unlimited connection, but slow AF. The Comcast is fast, but limited. But at least the Cocmast is only limited to 1TB, which is a lot for most people, but I've come close to going past it.

Nobody at home watches TV, so we don't have cable TV service. Instead, everyone watches everything online or download them. Since their origin isn't from USA, they watch foreign shows which is fully downloadable in HD/FHD. Each show/drama is like 2 ~ 4GB per and they download shitton.

I myself download quite a bit of porn and European medieval drama (Like the Tudors & Cadfael).

Bell Canada fiber here.

I think I pay 60 CAD + 30 CAD for bandwidth limit off. I live in somewhat rural area though. I was surprised I could get fiber to begin with.

They keep on doing dumb crap. It'll be so awesome if I happen to have my hybrid netbook tethered to my mobile phone for internet and this dumb ass OS decides to download an update. It'll consume my entire month worth of mobile data plan. What moron decides for these things at Microsoft? I'd like to meet this person. I really would like to. So I can punch him/her in the face.

Most of Canada and some of the US actually.
In Europe (Spain and Italy somewhat excluded) internet access is awesome. Lots of choices, very competative prices, solid speeds.

Agree. Even in a small city I reside, I have Bell, Tech Savvy, and Cosco. In a place like Toronto, you get a lot more choices.

I'm lucky I am connected to naked DSL, that means no line rental, and 1Tb per month, with no excess fees.
On the chance I go over the speed is limited.
They have offered me fibre optic but I'm happy with the current set up.
