And how about F@H also?
Is there a way repeatable to what can be achieved with them each, or even also a combined Crunch and F@H on CPU And include it with OC for that chip? ie gained 9F@H points in 60 sec. w/oc
BTW W1zzard excellent job on the review !! HAT's off for the venture into new terror-tory LOL :rockout::pimp::respect::clap::peace::lovetpu:

EDIT added:
If CPU has IGP, test its performance. Without that, kind of half the chip isn't tested.
Seconded.
Third !
Even if it's a small set of test something that the entire CPU can do all on it's own.
I will write up a small package for you to test CPU performance on genome assembly
Cool, iirc you 2 touched on that before

What's the big deal with the IGP testing.

AMD has and will always win that afaik

Now that my first CPU review is posted, I'd like to ask the community for thoughts on methodology, benchmark selection etc. (This not to discuss anything Ryzen-specific, posts will be deleted).

What applications do you use in daily life that make you wait? Would you like to see more/fewer games? Other resolutions?

- Databases?
- Rendering?
- Simulation?

I can automate nearly every application to perform benchmark testing, so don't worry if it can be done :)

If you're going to keep including overclock numbers I'd like to see premiere pro 4k and 1080 export times.

Isn't that a pure GPU performance test? Even a GT 240 w/ CUDA will be faster than Ryzen

As an heavy Matlab user I would love to have an idea of a cpu performance on such application. Since Matlab is paid and quite expensive, maybe Octave could be an alternative!
You probably make heavy use of GPU acceleration in Matlab? (or you don't wait long enough to bother with GPU?)

Could you share a problem set?

The true gaming framerate that a CPU is capable of, ie a fast, top-end graphics card run at low resolution to eliminate GPU bottlenecks. This is in addition to typical gaming resolutions.

I've seen people on here give all sorts of reasons why this isn't needed, but I beg to differ. How can you tell what the CPU is actually capable of if the card is bottlenecking the framerate so all the CPUs give the same result? This really starts to matter as people upgrade their graphics cards to faster ones, as CPUs are usually upgraded much less often.

I would like a little more Photoshop use. I mean I maybe in the minority but, this would effect my opinion greatly. I think you pretty much nailed everything other than that. Compressing a TIF in my opinion is a REAL test of a CPU.

For gaming, the most important metric for me is 90-99 percentile fps / frame times. Otherwise, virtualization (ESXi) VM performance would be a great, unique performance test. Unfortunately, that kind of test can't usually be done at launch since it usually takes a bit of time before there is compatibility

Well, I am not sure. My budget for CPU is pretty low according to any tech forum standards. I would say I am mostly interested to know which CPU is the best bang for the buck in the low-to-mid tier CPU's. Anything in specific with the way CPU handles RAM, power consumption and if there's something I need to pay attention to in a particular model. ( like no support for Blue ray or something like that). Thermal behaviour I am not really worried. I just want to know if there is a chance for unpleasant surprises : say $50 CPU, not able to play flash web based content in 2 years or so. Underwater stones ? is the phrase I think.

+1 on that.
At least a couple of popular lightweight games for reference. Nothing fancy.

Can you add in some details of each test in the relevant pages so people can see and replicate if possible? Of course some, such as the database set, depend on a specific work load but even a mention of this will help.

Well I'm after 4K reviews which is pretty much non existent. Since this is the way going forward.

Apart from that it would be nice to see how crossfire and SLI fairs also. Perfect example is Ryzen.

Obviously this is from a gaming point of view.

BTW your list of games for the Ryzen review was first class!

Thanks.

4k, sli and ffmpeg are my votes :)

4k will be included due to popular demand.

no plans for sli.

what's missing for ffmpeg? already got mp3, h.264 and h.265 encoding

Benchmark Scores They're pretty good, nothing crazy.
excel benchie (create pivot, undo, array formula, insert cells into beginning of data with array, undo)
formula looks like this:
=IF(SUMPRODUCT(($P$2:$P2=P2)*($P$2:$P2=P2))>1,0,1)

its basically a brute force count distinct function, but it really hammers a CPU once you get above 80K rows of data.

SQL performance would be nice to know too, but much of that is i/o limited.

-- also maybe a multithreading bench, or a 'noise bench' to see how performance degrades with background tasks. (i.e. 7600K is great at gaming unless you want to game and stream music from youtube and run a chat/teamspeak program).
That last one is a bit of a stab in the dark...

winsat cpuformal && winsat memformal ...?

Without better ideas :D But given the winsat command (in a privileged cmd) is present in Windows 10 (still) and...well, it is standardized :) it could give some raw performance data for the Windows platform at least, that can be compared between all sorts of processors, within the same kernel version of Windows.

EDIT: I am aware that values obtained from this command will vary, so avg. out of 6 runs should give a good picture. Besides, it is a somewhat fast benchmark.

EDIT_2: YES! Excel benchmark! Thank you for the suggestion @phanbuey

High res is interesting, but not for max/avg framerates. I want to see which CPU gives the most stable framerate, and ideally some sort of "stress" indication at 30, 60 and 120fps. Stress in this case is the amount of times the benchmark fps was not reached, times the duration of said drops.

Premiere pro leans far more on the cpu than gpu. The gpu side tends to cap out early.

Benchmark results that include varios ram speeds, and RAM types if available (for example, DDR3L vs DDR4 on skylake/kaby lake)

IMO that gives users a good idea of what RAM should be purchased when paired with a CPU

If it relates to the pentium G4560, i3s, the Wizzard talked about,
I'd very much like to see an inclusion of some older mid-range cpu performance in game tests. (as far as 2500k and i5 750 or 760 at their average OC capability)

I'm really thinking of your standard youtube work more so than say exporting some heavily edited RED footage. I think that would be most relevant to people and certainly non-critical enough that people would be interested in seeing overclock performance. If you could find stuff like GH4/phantom 4k and 1080p samples to use that would do. Could hit them with auto levels and an unsharpen mask for a common effect set.
