No more Windows 7/8.1 updates for Kaby Lake & Ryzen users

Microsoft is now officially blocking the installation of Windows 7 and 8.1 updates on systems with Intel 7th Generation Core (a.k.a. Kaby Lake) and AMD Ryzen processors:

If your system has an Intel 6th Generation Core processor (a.k.a. Skylake), then only some of them will continue to be supported in Windows 7 and 8.1. 16 OEMs will support 7 and 8.1 on certain Skylake model machines.

I honestly have no idea what you mean. Windows 10 is a good OS, and is not a terminal.

EDIT: Tangent incoming, but yes it is true that modern computing has gone back to that model, and has been doing so for a long while now. I don't see that as a bad thing. Sure it's awesome to have massive computing/storage capabilities locally, but in most cases it is not worth it.

It involves patching the wuaueng.dll file. I strongly suggest that you make a backup copy of that file before applying the patch.

Most likely will be blocked via May patches again.

it can be patched by

installing linux or you can disable updating once you have updated work around to prevent microsoft from disabling your CPU in the Future

Yea Microsoft does seem to have a couple of problems with ending support for Skylakes, first they didn't threaten to end support on it until after the CPU was out and while Win7 Pro was still available, second they kept changing the date, for certain systems, originally it was supposed to be in July 2017, then they pushed it back to July 2018, now it is EOL, so it does seem to be up in the air as to when or if they will start blocking support for Skylakes.

I don't really agree with MS in this case. With that being said it makes sense from a business point of view. So I can respect it.

Windows 10 is a damn fine OS. Probably the best OS ever created IMO. Dunno why you would cling to Windows 7 or 8 at this point unless you have to due to legacy software you need to run. Even then Windows 10 pretty much does all those also.

Good info to have. They can't patch out my 7.1 cd, and as a general rule, I don't allow updates on my Windows computers, so I'd say I'd be fine one way or the other. However, I assume if it's not already done, the chip vendors will start hard coding (literally) their chips not to load up with Win 7 or 8
