My problem is with the translation of 720p performance to performance at higher resolutions. I'm either blind, or stupid, or both. Because what I see is exactly the opposite of it being relative. That link to the Ryzen review proves how pointless testing @ 720p is. But like I said...I'm probably just a blind fool. At this point I wish I was actually. Man does my head hurt from it.

Let's just look at the top and bottom because everything else falls in between and let's go with Watch Dogs 2 because it has >200% spread between the lowest and greatest clock at 720p:

By 1440p, it hits the GPU bottleneck.

Yes, in that case it makes sense. However that isn't always the case. You linked us to the page with the relative performance charts which show a different story.

For example: @ 720p the R5 1600 performs better than the R7 1700X. Yet @ 1080p, 1440p, & 4K the R7 1700X performs better. But how can that possibly be if 720p is the be-all-end-all test resolution? The charts shown are full of such discrepancies. 1800X performs better than the 1600X @ 720p & 1440p. They perform the same @ 1080p. But the 1600X performs better @ 4K. How if 720p performance dictates performance at all higher resolutions?

I agree with what you see and my graph above shows it too: G4560 performs better at 1080p than 720p which defies logic without more research. If we assume that 720p generally produces wild results because GPU and CPU are duking it out, the most stable results come at 1080p.

Once you hit the GPU bottleneck (virtually all games at 2160p), CPU really doesn't matter. The G4560 actually beat the 7700K at 2160p.

I feel like my G4560 is perfectly in balance with my GTX970 OC, gaming 1080p @ 60Hz.

For the many, not for the few. Or so says UK's labour.

4k population is 1% of the whole or so it seems.

Until a game, which many of them do, use mkre than 2 threads...dual core gaming is well past its prime.
Umm, 2c/4t like in i3's. Totally different CPU like 2c/2t Pentiums.

Just do 720p and 8k benches. That will please both sides. 4k is dying. 8k is the future.

I understand the reasoning behind testing 720p gaming for the CPU but as a real world test (ones that I personally would be interested in), look at Steam's hardware survey and you see it's a dead resolution for most gamers. In fact 1440p has hardly taken off as most gamers use 900p or 1080p for desktop PCs. Surprisingly 1366 x 768 is still popular for laptops.

I think 720p should be kept as that will put more pressure on the CPU which is what's being tested
