Hi,

Edit: O... and here's that CABLE he plans to mod with (Cut, make it short, Etc.)

My plan is to Upgrade the RAM and CPU later on and use my main PC now as a Media Stream PC

So me and my Friend have this Project that we want want to Add a Desktop Video Card [nVidia GTX750ti 2GB] to a 8460P Laptop

He has a 400WATT PSU and he's making a Custom station out of a 3D Print Machine

I took some shots and added what needs to be done and he's in the works so far so but I'll update once I get updates...

On a Side-Note... isn't both the HP-Dock Connector port and the Old iPod connector the same? :ohwell:

There is one thing we are both concerned with. Seeing that the BIOS has a Block List at only Working with a certain WiFi Chip, wouldn't that effect the GPU not bing readable in Windows as the WiFi Cards I've tried? In eBay there are BIOS Chips for my Model that are unlocked/no password

So wait, any laptop with that connector can use an external GPU?

To my knowledge yes. Hopefully it'll work though we may Need to replace BIOS chip for a unlocked version. We'll going to see before if it works

That's amazing but I can't imagine that there's a lot of bandwidth on the PCI Express bus to play with.

You've got the wrong raiser. Just last week I've got a pair of special laptop raiser kits with mini-PCIe adapter. I'll make some pics in the morning (it's almost 2 AM here...)
I'm planning to do the same w/ my Vostro V131.

What you mean I have the wrong ones? These are far cheaper then the ones that cost $$$

I know it's a long shot and having to do mods with cases and BIOS CHIP replacement but it'll be worth it

These are not much more expensive. I paid ~$6.90 for it. Includes a mini-USB 3.0 cable, laptop adapter and a soft pad on the bottom =)
Regular risers are ~$4-8 depending on quality.

Yours will definitely require some soldering to get it going, and PCIe x1 adapter is gonna be unused. In my case, all I need to do is find a 9 or 10-pin connector, cut the wire in half, find a proper hole to drill (pun intended), and solder everything together. No hardware modifications on the laptop side required (I have a SOIC clamp for BIOS)

Got an idea 2 years ago from one of my random customers. He bought 4 used GTX660s, and when I asked what for, he said "We'll be modding some laptops, so my peops can do CAD with GPU acceleration". Except he used expensive $35 risers w/ enclosures and 19V to 12V step-down circuitry (so it will work with laptop power bricks). Can't find those anymore, but fortunately I have a good cheap local source of Meanwell 12V PSUs.

Took me all this time just to get motivated and start the project, that's how lazy I am....

So literally just that little PCI to big PCI thing let's me use my GTX780 with my laptop? How do you get the PSU to work with it? So many questions I need solved here!

Any decent 12V PSU should do. For slot-powered cards like GTX1050 or 750Ti you can use an industrial 12V 8-10A PSU or a small TFX PSU to supply power to the GPU. In case of larger cards you'll need something bigger, like a 350-400W PSU, solder on some 6+2 pin connectors and connect everything together.
The only difference between this and the Thunderbolt enclosure, is that the GPU is not hotpluggable out of the box (but I still believe it is possible).

So what does this do actually? A bit confused Ha....

All I wanted to do is use a Desktop-Typed Video Card instead of the Crappy On-Board Graphics which is HD3000

Pretty sure my method will hopefully work but we may need to replace the BIOS chip of course which will hopefully allow our pcie adapter to be detected where as right now the BIOS/MB seem to only want/use one type of WiFi-Card

I've seen this before only it used a small flat ribbon cable to the external dock but this seems more practical over a flimsy ribbon cable.
