lookin to upgrade i4770k to... i7820k or 8700k?

hi to all and pls bear with me!

so.. since end of 2013 i have intel core i7 4770k, gigabyte z87x ud3h and 32 gb ddr3 (4x8 @ 2400mhz)
rest u can see in sys spec details.
I use my pc for gaming and the cpu was oc'ed to 4.5 ghz @ 1.272v 24/7 and the temps were always ok.
Since this summer (and it was a extra very hot one here in Croatia) cpu degraded in stability...

Now i need 1.32v(and now is not so hot, ambient room temp is 25c) to maintain 4.5ghz in Battlefield1 which has 65~75% cpu usage... and temps spike to 85c (corsair h115i fans at 1800rpm and pump at max)

What i noticed is that sometimes in idle, cpu temps are 29c for hours...then after some heavier gaming
sessions cpu temp in idle is 36c also for hours and the ambient temp was the same...
too make long story short when that happens i disconnect the pc completley to discharge any electricity
and only then is idle cpu temp 29c again... I know, things are getting fuc.ed...

so my question is do i go for i7820k or 8700k when it starts sellin?
what do u guys think?

p.s. pc is completly cleaned from any dust, even put new thermal paste on cpu

You run a GTX 1070 which will not be limited at all by this CPU @ 4.5, or even at 4.2 Ghz.

That said, it will be a worthwhile upgrade if you move to 6c/12t and put a decent OC on the 8700k. It's probably my upgrade path as well, but as always, I wait for the official release and bench/real world results - we've already seen the abysmal temps of OCd 7700k, not a fan of that.

I'd probably wait for 8700k, it's the answer to finally having to compete again with another company for intel, so there might be some actual $/performance gains in store for you. Also more future prove, optimizations for 6 cores will become more regular in gaming as we go, certainly in the Battlefield type games department.

Meanwhile I'd clock it slightly lower with lower volts, just so you know it'll survive till your 8700k arrives.

You haven't by any chance bought that extra insurance Intel offered for K processors? Because that might be valid in this case. (emphasis on might)


PS. You have a lot of money invested in that rig though, memory n stuff, maybe just go with a 5770k and keep the rest of your rig? (just saw that it doesnt exist) so 4790k it would be, I'm guessing that won't do it for you.

No reason upgrade. Even my downclocked 4790k keeps up with my 1080Ti and it has 2-3 threads of WCG, a VM or two and another game up at once WHILE playing at 5760x1080.

i thought so also and i'll wait till 8700k get's out and yes 7700k temps are crazy high..
as of 5770k naah i'll wait a bit longer, as u said i will lower a bit voltage and ratios on all cores...
i am keepin all other components it's just cpu, mobo and mem i'll change...

did they gave 8700k release date?

The 4770k is still a decent CPU, just run it @ 4GHz range with HT on and without a lot of voltage. 4GHz vs 4.5GHz is just a matter of 1-2fps in high-resolution gaming.

You're right in general, but there are quite a few game titles, even at 1440p, that disagree with this statement and minor difference in FPS. He does run a high refresh monitor, so every FPS matters, even above 60.

At 4 Ghz keeping 120 fps will be quite a challenge

@DarkStalker - read what i have to say, because your problem seems familiar to me.

Your Core i7 4770K CPU itself is not getting faulty, i think it might be your motherboard's VRMs that cause the CPU overheat rather than CPU itself. The lone fact that CPU stability is degrading as you describe it is certainly motherboard's or power supply's fault. I had this issue back in 2009 - when i damaged my Foxconn P35AP-S caps (part of VRM), i had to run higher voltage to keep a certain OC on my Core 2 Quad Q9550. Also my CPU started working hotter afterwords. Seriously, processors can not degrade just like that - processors are the last thing on PC that will break.

To add more, Core i7 4770K is such a powerful CPU that it's ridiculous to talk about upgrade. People should only upgrade when their processors struggle with a certain scenario when the times comes and not for the sake of future proof. You have a Core i7 4770K, not Core i5 4670K.

i also noticed in aida that my +3.3v, +5v and +12v lowered a bit so i'm gonna borrow my friends psu in next couple of days to see if psu is the culprit... if it's the motherboard afterall
then i think i'm gonna upgrade the mbo, cpu, ram coz gettin these old z87x or z97x is not easy and buyin second hand could land me again where i'am....
i'll update u after psu testing

There is literally no point. If he is going to replace the board, he might as well just buy new board ram and CPU. z87 and z97 boards arent easy to come by unless you buy used, which sounds like he doesnt want to do that.

I would just wait a month or so after Coffee Lake is released and then decide what do then. I would not just change your board, that is ridiculous at this point in time.

I'd trade my cpu overheating for a nice hot summer, it was dreadful in Poland this year.

As far as your idle temps, this is normal for a clc. Air coolers reach their max temps quickly and cool down pretty much instantly as well. On the contrary, the water in the loop takes time to heat up, and then takes time to cool down. That's why I think CLCs suck in comparison to high-end air coolers. Temperature tests are done in 15 min. loops, while it usually takes much more for the water to heat up. After an hour or two the temps on a clc will rise by a few degrees, and this will require air pressure oriented (higher rpm) fans to speed up a little. Air coolers reach their max temps in a few minutes and all they require are airflow oriented fans (lower rpm).

Real things to do there:
Clean al possible hardware, fans, radiator fins, also take apart CPU / waterblock and replace Thermal paste,
if possible chech fan setup on your case, some cases could have improved airflow adding 1 o 2 more,

For a minor performance change doesn't constitute a complete system upgrade unless you are moving to skt 2066 or Threadripper.

A board would be overall cheaper.

If you do need a mobo - I'm selling my Gigabyte G1 Snipper 5 for about $150.00. Also selling a 4790K cpu.

Had the 4790K running at 4.7mhz with 2 x GTX780 Ti cards whit no problems at all

To OP, it all just depends if the cpu isnt enough power anymore. It might be time to think about a delid if it is getting too hot, the voltage is rising and you changed the paste already. Delid tools are easy to find. If you are stuck at 90%+ usage then yea I would upgrade whenever the 8700k comes out, or maybe even the most likely overpriced 8c/16t Z390 chipset.

I own a stock clocked and undervolted 4790k that I plan to delid once I get a high refresh rate monitor. I'm really hoping it will push on through until Tiger Lake and DDR5. Pipe dreams? Possibly. I will be getting Volta before any cpu.

i7-4770K user here. I'm really not seeing any performance incentive in upgrading CPU this round. I'm instead saving up for a 1080 Ti or Volta.

in a similar boat, but i have a much older 2600k. when reviews are out i hope 8700k performs well. 6c/12t with 4.7GHz(on singlecore, 4.6GHz all cores) is impressive, time to replace my 2600k 4.5GHz. I also game at 1080p144hz so it will be felt indeed.

Take a look if the cooler is still running properly.
