I picked GTX 1080 as a balanced high-performance option.

Now I see people demanding GTX 1080 Ti

Thoughts?

(720p will stay either way)

I say stick with the GTX 1080, which has a much larger market share and is more representative of builds with the CPUs being tested. We are not at the point where it is a bottleneck anyway, but if/when HCC CPU reviews happen it is worth doing a quick test with the 1080 Ti (or equivalent performance leader) to see.

Not yet, quite irrelevant at this point. I think the bench results themselves should be the motivation for this. There will always be the odd game that is GPU limited always, in fact, this is a trend we're seeing across the past five to ten years anyway (which is why 720p is so vital).

Another reason to me personally would be that the 1080ti relative performance really shines at the highest resolutions, which is where it matters the least in a CPU review.

1080ti may be bottlenecked by CPU's at 720p. It has been reported in reviews already so a GPU being too fast for a CPU doesn't make sense.

I can't find a reason why as long as reviews are consistent. GPU reviews are done with the latest "gaming CPU's" anyways.

CPU is planned 5-7 years ahead, take i5-2500K for example. Video card has much shorter life span 2-3 years. First titan became GTX 970. second titan GTX 1070, guess what Titan pascal is next years 70 card, so yes by all means if you can squeeze it in the budget. Nobody wants to buy cpu and realize that it was tested together with GTX 2060 which is GTX 1080 future alternative,.

If we take your 2500k. We could already tell with ease that this CPU would be very relevant 5 years ahead in time back then, because of the huge gaps shown with its competition, regardless of the GPU its coupled with. And here we are today, with lots of people still using them.

Relative performance never changes ;)

I say use the GTX 1080 Ti, it's a CPU test after all, pair it with the fastest GPU you can at any given res and then we can all see what is bottlenecking what... and when.

I say go with the highest performing GPU you can.

Though, I also think game benchmarks in CPU reviews are kind of pointless these days, and I tend to just skip over them. Why? Well, because pretty much any modern CPU is going to perform almost identically to any other modern CPU in games during real-world scenarios. Either the GPU will be holding you back, or you're getting such a high FPS that it doesn't matter anyway.

Most people Aspire to the highest performing GPU but their Wallet usually Restricts them to a lower Tier Card
Tests Should reflect that

Benchmark Scores Faster than yours... I'd bet on it. :)
Ditch 720p and the artificially inflated environment created by doing so which does not extrapolate to higher res. Its only good for cpu bottleneck at 720p, nowhere else. Nobody should give a hoot about how a cpu pefroms at 720p because it has little relation to any higher res...useless. Fabricated. Result.

Anyway, 1080... people are going to cry no matter what (see above :p)

and, its relatively (see what i did there) slower when compared with a modern processor at the same speed. Its still relaticely faster than the other cpus from back then, but is slower vs todays cpus in many, not all, titles.

I would stick with a GTX 1080, mostly for being closer to higher demographics usage.

Sure, but then most in the market for a RX 480 or GTX 1060 aren't using a i7 6700K @ 4.5Ghz either, but that is all about removing the CPU as a bottleneck after all.

Anyway, I enjoyed Tech Spots recent article on a similar vein:

https://www.techspot.com/article/1496-pairing-cpu-and-gpu-bottlenecking/

That, or people can fuck off with their "glass ceilings".

That is exactly the point of my second paragraph.

But we are talking about CPU tests here, so we should be doing everything possible to remove other bottlenecks from the test setup and move the bottleneck to the CPU. This allows us to test the CPU.

I mean, you wouldn't test Lamborghini cars and say "most driving is done on 35MPH roads, so we are only going to drive 35MPH the entire time", would you?
