Coffee Lake or Ryzen Upgrade question

Hello everyone,

So i was about to get a Ryzen 7 1700 before Coffee Lake gets released earlier than expected and with the current review results, i am stuck and not sure which one i should go with. I am currently thinking about going with Intel i7-8700 + MSI Z370A-PRO but with the Intel's early release and the game on boost clocks made me wonder if i am doing right.

I'm currently using an old notebook, sold my old CPU, Mobo and RAM already so can't wait for 2018.

I am going to use the system with this parts:
Gigabyte GTX 1080 Xtreme
CORSAIR Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 2666MHz C16
Corsair CX750
Samsung 840 Evo 250 GB + 1 TB Seagate Barracuda

The rig mainly will be used for gaming. I will be also compiling scripts at basic level and really love to multi-task and wouldn't mind about having an extra power if i need to render something.
My budget for CPU/Mobo is $440, only from Amazon.com

I would choose intel unless you really need the 2 extra cores of the ryzen 7.
Go 8700k in case you feel like overclocking later for more power otherwise the Z370 chipset is kinda wasted.

Thank you for your advice. I'm currently very tight on budget and with the limited availability of 8700K, i think 8700 wouldn't upset me down.
Also it doesn't have to be ryzen 7, i am wondering should i consider ryzen 5 1600 at all or no need to?

what resolution are you using for gaming? if it is 1440p and you want to save some money you can go for the Ryzen5 1600X if you're on 1080p you will be better off with the 8700(k)

Ryzen is cheaper and you do get the same number of cores : 6.
I personally am not buying ryzen because I fully expect ryzen 2 to bring significant improvements. Never been a fan of jumping on something first generation.

Id go Ryzen as the platform will last longer the intels current platform (most likely) and by this time next yr Zen+ will be out with better price performance again then the current intel offering and I cant see intels current offering be much better then Zen+ and at a price premium as always.

What games is probably more important than the setup.

I would say the 1600 is probably the best value proposition unless you need to be hitting good FPS, especially if you have a tight budget. Also, if Zen2 doesnt have the same cuts in gaming performance relative to intel, you will be able to upgrade down the road.

Else, you might have to wait a while for the coffee lake stuff to get on the shelves, so you might have time to save up for a 8700k. If you go for an i5 or a non-k now, you will probably have less options down the road seeing as intel will probably ditch support for Z370...

you can get a low cost B350 board and they offer the same capabilities as X370 excluding multi GPU support

Nothing wrong with it, i do play like that, no regrets, also im quite happy with the FPS, Temps and experience, would like to move on to 3x1080p screens, Nvidia surround, maybe next year!

Not really, if i try to put a monitor in my budget, i will have to wait for the Amazon.de partnernet to get paid so i can get the motherboard. This should be happened by end of the month but can't guarantee it since i am new on that.

Yeah, i was thinking about ASUS B350 Prime Plus as mobo if i choose to get a monitor, else i was going to get X370 Gaming Plus from MSI for $110

Thank you for your advice. I already got the 16GB ram for $95 (nice catch ) and imho to use the OC capabilities of that i5, i would also going to need a proper motherboard + a cooler which should cost the same. Would you still get i5(k) in this situation?

both are great option, i guess the one that migh fit your situation the best at the moment, is 144hz one, no matter if your still on 1080p, the point is the having the most complete possible setup for the desired resolution to play...

ill be worried about an unlocked processor to take out all the juice from that Z87 board, all the given specs are fine for happy gaming, no bottlenecks or performance losses with all, so spend your money wise, improve cooling, storages (moar SSD's or moar storage for photos, videos etc,.) but improving processor, ram and board to ryzen will result in "0" notable performance boost or improvement over what you have to justify the investment, also resale value of intel hardware always is higher compared to all amd products when they come to 2nd hand market,

But i might be a graphics whore inside (even i play minecraft etc.) so would i be able to get 144fps on 1080p with ryzen 1600? Or do i need to get 144 fps at all? Shouldn't it flicker without g-sync?

That's why i wanted to go with i7-non K, i can easily maximize the potential of my GPU and if i need to render something at some point it wouldn't disappoint me.

Also to clarify something, i have actually bought MSI H81M-P33 for i5-4670, the Z87 was a review unit given to me as gift.

I would go for the 1440p 144hz if possible

Maybe we should just remove the monitor option or we will end up with 2160p@144hz monitor to my notebook

That's why i wanted to go with i7-non K, i can easily maximize the potential of my GPU and if i need to render something at some point it wouldn't disappoint me.

consider also newer motherboard, sockets and processor arent compatible with you already have, since you have a tight budget for all upgrade guess the best for you will be a 1150 i7, so you just save ram and board getting a decent boost over what you have

I am sorry but i think i am being misunderstood atm. I am going to get a CPU and Mobo. I've already sold my old CPU, Mobo and RAM. Also i have already bought the Ram so i will only need to get a CPU&Mobo for $440.

Since your emphasis is gaming, with a few other secondary tasks, it's a no-brainer. Get the i7-8700k. Just be patient and wait. More will become available shortly.

So finally i have received the parts and can use my system again. I'm glad i didn't waited for coffee lake which is not even available for pre-order (talking for Amazon).
