Am I the only one wondering how the owners of the 7740x feel? I'd feel kind of scammed by Intel tbh

the 7740x at least is easily deliddable and can go to 5.2 Ghz and has ringbus - the 7800x is the one that really got crushed.

He just wanted to try the AMD part. Since then, he's also bought an i9-7980XE system.
He says that he'll keep both of them.
Jeez he must be rolling in $$$

He's doing OK.
I seriously got a great deal on my 7900X. I traded four GPUs for it that I had on the shelf. Two 8GB Gigabyte G1-Gaming RX480s and two 8GB ASUS Strix RX580s. All but one of them were bought before prices went stupid-high.

If I would have had to pay full retail, I would have bought the ThreadRipper.

Might as well have... msrp was 240 for the 480/580 8gb... = 960. You saved, at most, $40 as the strix and G1 were over msrp bu some amount. Cant say that is much of a deal for a used cpu and cards.

I got the CPU, 64GB of HyperX RAM, and an MSI X299 Gaming M7 ACK motherboard for my GPUs. I did OK on the deal.

Thats different than what was initially stated.. ;)

Good for you. :)

Yeah, my mistake. I should have elaborated from the start. I have yet to put it all together. Hopefully, it will be this week.

Many of us know people who always buy the latest, greatest gear. (TVs, PCs, Phones, Ect)
These are the people who help us retirees that are on a fixed income get great second-hand gear that we otherwise couldn't.

Going with Ryzen - 1600x or 1700 (non-x) on a B350 mATX motherboard (MSI Mortar Arctic) - expecting to buy all the parts by december. Frankly the 4 core ryzen parts look very attractive right now, but since I'm spending some $$, I might as well go for a 6 or 8 core job.

Believe it or not, right now I'm typing this off a i5 760 overclocked to 3.82GHz, and I have to say there's not much difference between this and my dead i7 3770k (mainboard died, can't find a replacement mATX z77 anyware). Paired with a GTX 1070, the old i5 handled every game I threw at it perfectly, so I'm in no hurry. The lack of USB 3.0 is annoying tough.

Intel could've said the same thing when they first launched socket 1151 with skylake and that it would support up to kaby lake because technically they aren't lying, just one needed a new mobo because a new chipset was required every single time.
Kaby Lake is a rebadged Skylake w/o the OC BCLK support for a huge market up. I'm sorry, but 100MHz is not a upgrade and if you think it is you are both a chump and a sucker. I want at least 333MHz-500MHz and/or another core or two that's a god damn upgrade screw those Intel consumer milk cucking bastards we have options again and we chose to short our stake in their stock.

I don't feel too bad, as I was basically starting from scratch.. I haven't built a PC in awhile and have been using laptops for a long time. Kaby was the best at the beginning of the year. Just like getting Coffee would be a good choice if you're just getting new hardware after a long wait. If you had Skylake already there's less benefit.. just like if you have Kaby now, there's little point to Coffeelake.

The only thing I regret is the temps. I had no idea, and I should have looked into it more and waited for Ryzen.

Still it's the chip set life cycle by Intel that's terrible. Upgrade paths are non existent for Intel these days or 5% improvement at best for like 100% additional cost. That's terrible for consumers and hardly qualifies as innovation. The difference between a Skylake i7 w/BCLK, Kaby Lake i7, or a Coffelake i5 clock for clock isn't even worthy of mention. The 6 core coffee lake parts are the only things which really appear to be "new" since Skylake. The 100-200MHz give or take additional clock speed for a entire product's life cycle is a total laughable joke. We'll see what happens with Ryzen's refresh next year at least it's getting a die shrink which is more than anything Intel's given consumers from Skylake through Coffee Lake excluding Coffee Lakes i7's which either way requires a new board even though it's the socket. You have to wonder could CL worked on old chip sets if they had simply re-purposed the wasted iGPU pins? It's Intel's behavior as a consumer that's frustrating I'll go with AMD as my next CPU most likely simply because Intel has treated me too carelessly. I'm not willing to just throw globs of cash at Intel blindly because they want me to and think I should that's not how free markets work.

Zen 2 has me hyped to know what will come with that I think Zen + will even be quite exciting even 500MHz on these 8c/16t Ryzen parts could be major that adds up to 4GHz in total hell even 250MHz would be a big boost with so many cores and threads and with thread ripper even more so. I wonder if Zen+ will increase the cache size marginally as well if so that could help too.

I'm not willing to just throw globs of cash at Intel blindly because they want me to and think I should that's not how free markets work.

To be fair... there are additional power pins for the cores for CL that make it not compatible... that's a pretty valid reason. Telling a mobo vendor "I know those used to be iGPU pins, but i need you to run power through them now" might not be so easy. Could they have made it so that the Z170/270 boards were compatible? Possibly - but they have always done 2 gens and a chipset swap; nothing really new. (kaby lake was compatible with z170 but no one wanted to pay for the ~5% performance increase).

Also the performance of CL means it is a relevant chip for the price - 50% increase in MT performance for a 10% price increase sounds pretty good. And the 7700K still takes top spot in some benchies so it will be a great chip for some time to come.

The guacamole they used instead of solder is unfortunate, but doesn't really change the overall picture.

CL 6 core chip isn't terrible, but it's a slap in the face at the same time it really just validates the fact Intel has been jerking consumers around. There are way too many clear instances where Intel has been dicking around consumers from OC to HS to ipc, MC, and cache changes from one generation to the next. Why is it we just now have 12MB cache on consumer CPU's when C2Q had that like 8 years ago and it was faster L2 cache fabricated at 45nm? Why the hell is Z370 made at 22nm even Z170 could have been made at 14nm easily at the time. Thank god for AMD bringing some damn accountability back to Intel w/o that competition they are just a reckless monopoly that we are all victim to or stick in tech limbo because no one else can make x86 CPU's except VIA who fell off the face of the planet.

Wish VIA could make a comback somehow. "All" they need is an investor with deep pockets and some good engineers.

Just switched after 3 years using a FX-8320 to a Ryzen 5 1600 and I am more than satisfied with it. The only upgrade I have planned, is to replace my R9 390 next year.

En garde ! my mobo arrives tomorrow so by Sunday i should have some benchmarks, if everything goes to plan.

ryzen 1400 + ram is here, just gotta delay til after some bills are paid to upgrade to a 1700 - so i can do 4c/8t benchies if nothing else, curious to see how it runs on water vs the stock cooler (3.8ghz max on air)

I was looking for the 7700k when I realized the 8700k were about to pop-up!... so Im waiting until its available in my country (Norway), and I see someone with a running hackintosh!.. as I have been running that also since 2009 in my trustworthy (and still running strong) i7-950 I got when it was released in 2009!, and I just want to get upgraded, so I have a chance of still making a pc nr.2 with the other components (cpu, mobo, ram, gpu, psu and case) I got laying around.. and sell it, before its too late! ;)
